Bholay Baba called us, an instant plan was made with a friend & off we were on our bikes. We started at 1am from Gurugram on 11th March 2021 for Tungnath Ji. Reached Chopta (480 kms from Gurugram) which was our base camp. Stayed at Chopta Swiss Camps. Next day went for Tungnath Ji darshan which is the world's highest Shiva temple (12500 ft). It's a 4 kms trek which for me was exhausting but was able to climb all the way up in 3 hrs. Feeling and ambience once I reached temple was absolute divine and blissful. Rest the pics will speak for themselves. Downhill took me only an hour. Would definitely go there again if Shiv Ji call me again. Om Namah Shivay.

This was on our way to summit point at Chandrashila.
An exciting trek. A lot to walk. So, need to start early in the morning. If one wants to witness the sunrise, the trek can be started even at 3am.
This tests your stamina and patience.
Nice scenery on the way. Many himalayan peaks will accompany you on the way to top.

The trek to Tunganath temple is a bliss when you get to experience green lawns, snow clad mountains as you climb up. We used the horses as we had kids along. If you are not taking the horses then buy sticks from the starting points. Don't run while climbing as you will be breathless soon.

Tungnath is one of the highest Shiva temples and the the highest of the five Panch Kedar temples. Such a beautiful hike .. mesmerizing and breathtaking. It took us 3 hrs to climb and 1 hr to climb back. The weather is quite unpredictable, so wear layers and definitely keep w a walking stick. If you reach don’t miss on chandrashila, it’s another one hour from there.

The trek is extremely difficult for beginners n those not used to such steep slopes! It’s a most exotic scenic route and the peaks r majestic n flowers r magical.. all that is true but pls know it’s a v v steep track! There is barely any flattish path.. it’s not there! Don’t go without adequate preparation for body strength n stamina.. also in march end it was so cold that one could loose their mind due to cold! Very limited food options r available only when the temple is open from may mid to October! Around the start point of trek lodging options r very very basic.. tacky rooms, unwashed stinking blankets! Ice cold water! We needed 6 layers of blankets quilts to sleep! Still it wasn’t feeling enough in march end 2022

Chopta which is called switzerland of India is a great place in Garhwal Hills of Utttarakhand. I have visited this place two times, one while going from Kedarnath to Badrinath and another time when we specifically went for it recently. It is situated at almost 8500 foot above the mean sea level and remains snow bound in winter months....

Tungnath means "Lord of the peaks". It is an ancient temple of Lord Shiva, visited by few pilgrims in summers. Located at a high altitude (3,680 m) in the midst of forests, this place is mostly unexplored by travelers. This area is famous for its rich flora-fauna and serene beauty.
One can reach the nearest settlement Chopta on Ukhimath-Gopeshwar road. Chopta has small shops and rooms available for trekkers. Even Chopta (2,860 m) itself is desolated during winters, so we started trekking from Duggalbitha (2,340 m). A day before we drove from Ukhimath, but the snowfall had only allowed our vehicle to make up to Dugglabitha. There are couple of resorts and camping sites. Trekking day was clear and sunny. We preferred cutoff routes and passed through streams and alpine meadows, locally called as "Bugyals". We reached Chopta before afternoon. Looking down, one can see the untouched valley of evergreen forests.
Chopta offers a stunning view of Himalayan peaks - Kedar and Chaukhambha. It gets better and wider as you go up. The trail to Tungnath is five km uphill and is accessible by foot only. The paved path was snow covered and slippery in February. Intermittent railings are wound up vertically above Rhododendron populated slopes. As we moved towards sky, snow fields got deeper. Suddenly, we reached on top of a cliff and witnessed an amazing open view of the faraway Himalayan peaks.
Tungnath temple and Chandrashila peaks were just above us. We abandoned the plan climbing up as it was already four in the evening. Following a local guide on our way down to Chopta, we took some slides. After watching sunset in Chopta, we resumed walking down to Dugglabitha. Snow laden Himalayan peaks offers a majestic panorama in a full moon evening. The wondrous expedition was over but its vivid memories will prevail.

Some precautions for winter trekkers:
- Carry packaged food and sufficient water.
- Take a pair of snow-boots (or lease it from Duggalbitha).
- Should wear sunscreen and shades.
- Consider starting earlier in the day.

First, you must do this trek during the last two weeks of April!
This is an amazing trek - in fact, the best trek I have ever taken. Haridwar to Ukhimath 205 kms, by GMOU bus Rs 270, 8 hours. Bus starts at 10.20 outside Rahi Guest house of GMVN. Rahi is one of the best and cheapest place to stay in Haridwar. In fact, most of GMVN facilities are good and value for money. At Ukhimath GMVN offers rooms for Rs 700 and wooden huts for Rs 600 just facing Kedar peak and Gupta Kashi on the opposite mountain. It's a lovely site. Food is average.
From Ukhimath, one can take a bus at 7 am for Chopta, 30 kms, which is a starting point of the Tungnath trek.A special taxi from Ukhimath to Chopta and back takes app Rs 1500. An app 4 kms beautiful paved trek takes about 3 hours to Tungnath temple which constantly offers the view of a vast Himalayan range with Kedar and Chaukhambha peaks among many others. Tungnath has one or two shops offering Noodles, Paranthas and Tea as well as soft drinks etc. Temple is modest. There are few rooms to stay but the accommodation is basic only. There are some trekking resorts as well near Chopta. They are good but expensive. Magpie and Alpine resorts two of those. There is some wildlife - Himalayan tahr, Monals, Pheasants, Magpies and few other birds; however, very difficult to spot anything except some exotic birds. Forest department charge Rs 150 entry fee.
A one hour 1 km trek above Tungnath temple to Chandrashila is a must. Take this trek even if you are a bit tired. It's a feast to the eyes and soul. Chandreashila trek is a bit tough with parts covered with snow, very steep but amazing indeed. Once you are on the top, you really feel on the top of the world. The whole world including the otherwise intimidating mountains beneath your feet! There are very few places in the world which offer such a great 360 degree fish eye view. You enter trance in this place. On one side is Kedar and Chaukhambha, on the other is a majestic Nandadevi and others.
You get an ocean of Rhododendron flowers all around all through the trek as far as your eyes can go. I have never seen such an expanse of floral beauty anywhere in the world. Of course, you have to come in the April.
After a total of app 8 hours of up and down trek, you return to Chopta. If you can make it, you can take a bus to Ukhimath at 2.30 pm. Otherwise, you have to manage your own way to Ukhimath.
Do this trek once in your life.
