Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great fascinating archaeological jewel and, at the same time, of significant interest for scholars. Not well known, unfortunately, to the general public and not yet complete in the excavation work, due to the extension of the site, it appears as an open-air historical stratification. The visit to the site is free and the archaeological staff of the small but precious museum (the latter on payment of an economic ticket) is of refined preparation and extreme willingness to lead visitors in the historical/urban understanding of the plant.

It was hard to find and we drove around quite a while until we finally arrived. The site is not as large and impressive as Pompei, but was still of good size and interesting. Uncrowded compared to Pompei. There were lots of informative
placards written in both Italian and English explaining the ruins. Surprisingly it is free.

Truly a hidden gem - I mean it, we had trouble finding it. GPS took us to a parking lot of a restaurant. You park there then walk. Some great ruins and few people. And free.

A great place to explore life in a rural Roman town in the South Central hills of Italy. Not far from Campobasso, it offers a chance to see what an ancient village looked like without the mobs of tourists you find in the major ancient ruins. Spend a few hours and relax among the ruins and enjoy a local meal in various restaurants nearby.

Staying locally hence had the opportunity to visit this amazing place, the scale is epic and you are free to walk around the grounds of this amazing once city.
They have restored some of the old walls and gated entrances and continue to excavate. As previous comment, would suggest wearing sturdy footwear.
Entrance is free and has small cafe on site

We went at about 9 am on a weekday in October, 2018 and virtually had the place to ourselves for the first hour; even later that morning only a handful of tourists were wandering about this ancient place which is well worth the visit to see a small Roman village from ages ago.

Sepino deserves to be seen by many more people..It is a real country setting, sheep and herder walking around the ruins. So interesting, don't miss it. But, the surprising thing is, hardly any people. You are able to walk among the ruins and really get the feel of long ago.. Amazing!

This was our 3rd or 4th visit over the last 10 years or so. It's great to see the excavations continuing and that there's now an active museum and archaeological society looking after the site.
You need your walking shoes for this one. The site is big and you'll get more out of it by exploring slightly off the already not-very-well beaten paths...

The ruins of Saepinum (modern Altilia) depict the layout and foundation of a Roman town, as well as a couple buildings. There are two main roads that cross in the middle of the town, with four original gates to enter at either end of the roads. Not crowded, free of charge, informative displays for self-touring. According to Wikipedia, the city walls were apparently erected by Tiberius before he was emperor, between 2 BC and 4 AD according to an inscription.
You will see the remains of many foundations, a theatre and temples , as well as a mausoleum. Very interesting area and a lovely view and country walk! About 30 minutes from Guardia Sanframondi. A recommended day trip. Remember to stop along the route for fresh buffalo cheese at the outlet for Caseificio!

Hi Dennis, we are old and can't walk too far. Also we need facilities ie restroom close by. Could we get around Saepinum. It looks fantastic but maybe inaccessible.

We are really keen to visit Molise. We visited the Vasto area of Abruzzo and loved it and are now keen to explore the archeological sights and the historic areas of Molise. Any town, village or agratourismo which would be a nice base, any nice eating places, any tips really!
