At the entrance you are welcomed by the lake and the shores view that is absolutely breath-taking. Inside the palace there are two floors. The architecture inside is stunning and the rooms are full of furniture. It was lovely to visit.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 May 2024
- MWeisenselCincinnati, Ohio199 contributionsWorth a VisitLovely place, lovely setting but not blown away. That's not to say you should not visit.... You should! Just don't expect Versailles. What you can see of the interior is very limited as the royal family actually lives in part of the building. The gardens were expansive and very nice, but are also very basic. Still, very glad I made the visit.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 May 2024
- Marisa LBoston, Massachusetts92 contributionsGreat Visit! We greatly enjoyed out trip to Drottningholm Palace. The palace and the grounds are beautiful and it's definitely worth taking a walk in the gardens and going into the Chinese Pavilion. We did not do a guided tour of the palace, but I'm sure it would have made the visit even better.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 May 2024
- T-SGlobetrottersPreston, United Kingdom4,097 contributionsWorth a visit as a half day experience on the ferryWe used the Stromma ferry from the Klara Malarstrand berth (numbers 4 or 5) which is a 50 minutes sailing to Drottningholm. A very pleasant trip along the lake which takes you directly to the palace. We had decided to skip the Palace tour in favour of the gardens, a walk around the park land and a guided theatre visit. The English Park is laid out in ‘Capability Brown’ style with attractive lakes. The more formal Baroque garden while having a defined structure with topiary and impressive water features is very basic with little detail or planting so the overall effect was a bit disappointing. However it is free to enter and it makes a pleasant change from busy Stockholm The theatre visit was interesting, apparently it is one of two wooden theatres still surviving in Europe and still hosts operas several times a year. The visit lasts 30 minutes but is restricted to the auditorium and several adjacent rooms. Sadly backstage was out of bounds. Recommend taking a photo of the map at the entrance to the gardens as signposting is limited once you are in there. Overall this was a good half day unguided excursion.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 June 2024
- Richard BEdinburgh, United Kingdom5,410 contributionsFit For A QueenA palace fit for a queen. A nice, cozy 40 bedroom duplex with views of the surrounding neighborhood. Would suit couple who likes the outdoors and ruling over the entire country. The neighbours are friendly enough. We have Finland, Norway and Germany - keep themselves to themselves. Sales pitch over (genuinely), a great day trip from Stockholm by boat or metro and bus combo. The palace is stunning, gardens equally so and the Chinese Pavillion tucked away in the far corner not to be missed. This summer palace IS Swedish royalty and UNESCO likewise. Definitely worth a look when in Stockholm.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 August 2024
- GeneralShamuNew York City, New York1,178 contributionsFamily Friendly VisitThe palace and associated gardens are truly spectacular. The parking is located on site by the tennis courts (must pay). The palace itself has guided tours that are essential as they bring everything to life. Strollers are not allowed in the palace itself nor the Chinese Pagoda, ergo bring a carrier. The gardens themselves are very expansive and great for a leisurely stroll afterwards.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 September 2024
- Adventure40115953224112 contributionsThe 17th Century Castle Where the King and Queen of Sweden Reside!Drottningholm Palace in Sweden is located on the island of Lovon outside of Stockholm. The Palace is a well perserved 17th century castle. Since the Royal family resides in the palace, there are only certain sections of the palace open to the public. The paintings, and furnishings in the rooms provided us with the history of Sweden. I enjoyed the Hall of State with the paintings of various kings and important people in Swedish history.. The grounds are well manicured with fountains, and the beautiful lake front. A wonderful place to take photos. There is a gift shop in the palace. We took a guided tour because of the additional information the guide provides. As we were leaving a woman asked us where we were from and we responded, the United States. She hugged us thanking us for the support the USA has given to her country, Ukraine. Would highly recommend visiting this beautiful Palace.!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 September 2024
- KemikOjstraMaribor, Slovenia1,776 contributionsSwedish VersaillesAmazing scenery with lake, baroque garden, royal park, Gothic tower, Guards' tent, palace theatre and, of course, magnificent rooms with amazing decorations in the palace. This is the formula for a very good day or half-day trip, the best done with boat tours from Stockholm through picturesque Lake Mälaren (a ride took around 50 minutes one way from Klara Mälarstrand near Stockholm City Hall and free time between boat rides was 4 hours). Experience is similar to that in French Versailles although it is not so much crowded yet, so it is more space for every single person. Highly recommended to do while in Stockholm Area.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 30 September 2024

We took a tour of Drottningholm Palace when we were in Stockholm at the start of a Scandinavian tour. First, we highly recommend that you take the ferry to the Palace versus the train/bus, the cruise is part of the experience to approach the palace to appreciate the beauty of the palace as viewed from the water. The ferry starts from the pier that is within walking distance from Stockholm's main train station. Another plus is how close Stockholm's City Hall is from the pier, so if you arrive early for the ferry, you can take a walking tour of the exterior of City Hall. We highly recommend that you take the guided tour of the palace, very informative. The palace is not as impressive as Versailles but it smaller size is still impressive. The palace grounds with it gardens are another plus. It will take a full day to appreciate the beauty of this palace. BTW, the restaurant on the palace grounds was very good.

Drottningholm Palace is where the current Royal Swedish family lives when they are in residence. It’s about a 15-20 min drive or a 50 min boat ride to the palace. It is pretty quick to walkthrough, maybe an hour at most. There is one English tour for the day and it fills up quickly, so be sure to be there right at opening time if you want to join. There is a small royal guard change at noon that was cute to watch.
The grounds in the back are quite large. Unfortunately, we were a bit early so nothing was in bloom yet, but you could see how it would be lovely in the summer. There are a couple of fountains, several gardens, a labyrinth and the Chinese Pavillion, along with several other structures to see on the grounds.
Overall, it was just okay. The Royal Palace in Gamla Stan is much more impressive and where I would recommend visitors spend their time.

Drottningholm Slott is well-deserved in its status as a UNESCO world heritage site, as it's a wonderfully preserved example of a royal palace and gardens that is known as the Versailles of Scandinavia. The gardens were beautiful and we liked seeing a robotic lawn mower, which we had never seen before coming from Tasty America. The interior of the Slott was opulent and gorgeous, and particularly the second floor, which incorporated many elements of marble statues and designs that were reminiscent of Italian and French palaces.
We visited the Slott by Stromma's boat tour, and cannot recommend Stromma highly enough. It's a great company and the ride was pleasant and beautiful.

Was expecting something more visitor-friendly. Arrived after a metro and then bus journey to find no signage from the bus stop and then absolutely nowhere to buy a coffee. Was told that the closest place to buy one was on another island or back at the metro stop! Restaurant was only serving Christmas meals and nothing else. Palace interior is v beautiful and the grounds even in snow are stunning but think the visitor experience needs to be a little more 21st century if they charge 21st century admission prices

This palace is modelled against the French Chateaux. Should you have been to The Versailles, it might not be up to your expectation. Since I have not been to The Versailles, I found it worth visiting. We took a boat to and fro the pier near Stockholm City Hall. We bought the ticket for SEK 340 per pax from the ticket booth at the pier. This ticket is inclusive of the entrance to the the royal residence of the palace. It was a scenic and relaxing boat ride. However, we should have taken a bus back from the palace to have a different experience of the street view.
Beside the palace, there are a few attractions within the palace compound such as the Chinese Pavilion, the theatre, the church, and the garden. You have to pay extra for additional attractions which you can select from the different ticket offered. Due to time constraint, we only visited the palace and part of the garden. The garden is an ideal place for a leisure stroll in a sunny and breezy spring.

Easy to get to from Stockholm using train and bus. This private home of the Swedish Royal family built in late 16th century is well maintained old luxury. The tour through the castle was informative and showed many beautiful and historic rooms. The grounds were green when we visited in August and it was pleasant to wander. I can see why it was compared to Versailles.

The signs leading to the carpark from the main road were down, possibly due to construction, so if you are driving, you do need to turn at the first intersection after the bridge. Once we parked, there was very little signage (actually none) to find the ticket booth and so we did wander around a bit outside the front before finding a very small sign near the back. The palace is very grand and lovely on the edge of a lake. The rooms we were able to tour in the palace were decorated over the top - tons of gilding, huge paintings, wild colors, large furniture, etc. There are rooms with the huge paintings of battle scenes which were so interesting, but it was very hard to see the paintings because of the glare coming in from the windows and half of the room was roped off so you could only view the paintings in the front half. The docents were helpful and informative. The gardens are lovely, although somewhat understated in that the grand avenues didn't have statues and there were no flower gardens, it was all shrubbery, and just one fountain. The Chinese Pavilion is a little bit tricky to find, since there are no signs and lots of hedges and trees blocking the view of it, The pavilion does cost extra, but you can buy a combination ticket for the palace and the pavilion. The pavilion was small and really not all that interesting, although it did have beautiful wallpaper and lacquer work. You can walk up to the large tower on the grounds, Kina Slott, and get a great view of the whole park. There are so many lovely walking paths along streams and small lakes and it's very peaceful.

We got to the palace early in the day in order to minimise the number of people and especially tour groups inside which seemed to work pretty well. There were a lot of rooms to see, spread over two floors, most with original furnishings and wall coverings. A few real highlights and the view of the gardens from the palace is beautiful.
Note that you don’t need to pay to view or use the gardens which are huge with lots of fountains, lakes and pathways. There are also two cafes, one smaller one with drinks and limited food options at the back of the gardens, and a larger one with more seating nearer to the entrance. There are toilets at both café locations. Note there is a separate entrance fee for the theatre and also the Chinese Pavilion, both also having limited opening hours so organise this early on if you want to see it. A great place for a day out.

A visit to the palace is not worth the ticket price (140 SEK). A few slightly shabby-looking rooms accompanied by meagre explanations of what is on display. It could be done better for the potential of the place. The garden is well kept and very large, ideal for a nice walk and to relax for a few hours...

Yes you will need to buy boat tickets, the boat ride is 50-60 minutes depending on stops. We had the Stockholm Pass which included free boat fare and all entrance fees at the castle activities.
