From the 10th century onwards, this town became an important link with the Slav peoples, especially those of Poland and Pomerania. During its period of greatest prosperity, from the 12th century onwards, the architecture of Bamberg strongly influenced northern Germany and Hungary. In the late 18th century it was the centre of the Enlightenment in southern Germany, with eminent philosophers and writers such as Hegel and Hoffmann living there.

We really enjoyed the history of Bamberg. There are many interesting buildings, the shopping was fun, and the cathedral was amazing. It is a good city for walking around and enjoying the atmosphere!

The old town is fascinating to walk around, with twisty streets and unexpected views. The architecture is striking, and the river running through town adds to the ambience. An unexpected gem. Well worth a visit.

Bamberg is a city set on waterways - in medieval times known as little Venice. While the waterways have reduced over the centuries they remain an important part of this city's identity. Bamberg is also reminiscent of Rome with her seven hills. With a vast and impressive Domplatz (the site of the magnificent Bamberg Cathedral, Neue Residenz, Old Courthouse and... More

After parking and walking across one of the many bridges that divide the new town with the altstadt or old town, the medieval beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage listed city centre revealed itself to us. Like many European towns and cities, it is pedestrian friendly with only limited motor vehicle access. We arrived at around 11.30 a.m. with the... More

Just looking at the huge number of churches in that town one could guess that in the past citizens of Bamberg sin a lot. Fortunately, apart from dozens of old churches nowadays tourists can find in Bamberg many other interesting places to visit and to spend nice time with good food and drinks ;-)

Great town, visited during the summer as a day out whilst also visiting the nearby Erlangen beer festival, and visited in December to experience the Xmas Markets. Easy to commute to on the train, and we used day rover tickets to travel to Coburg and Nuremberg. We enjoy a walk and a beer, and this town is ideal for both.... More
