From the 10th century onwards, this town became an important link with the Slav peoples, especially those of Poland and Pomerania. During its period of greatest prosperity, from the 12th century onwards, the architecture of Bamberg strongly influenced northern Germany and Hungary. In the late 18th century it was the centre of the Enlightenment in southern Germany, with eminent philosophers and writers such as Hegel and Hoffmann living there.

Great town, visited during the summer as a day out whilst also visiting the nearby Erlangen beer festival, and visited in December to experience the Xmas Markets. Easy to commute to on the train, and we used day rover tickets to travel to Coburg and Nuremberg. We enjoy a walk and a beer, and this town is ideal for both.... More

Bamberg is just adorable. It's a little straineous, because you have to walk a lot uphill and downhill. The breweries are to die for. Highly recommend the smoked beer at Braurei spezial.

If you visit Bamberg you'll see one of the most beautiful cities of Bavaria, with its old medieval buildings and cathedrals. Just enjoy the good food and to save the shock, there will be a massive choice in therms of Beer (and it will be quite hard to find a bad one). Hope you'll enjoy your stay here!

We visited the residence and church prior to walking here. Very cool mural on the building. Make sure you look at both sides. Lots of cute shops and places to grab a beer or a bite to eat.

One of the few German towns of this size that was not heavily bombed. Many historical buildings, some more than 600 years old. Very beautiful old town. What many people would picture when they think of a quintessential German town.

Done as part of our river cruise. An informative walking tour and then free time to shop, or find a bar. Would have been exquisite in the summer months.

Bamberg is the capital of beer, so if you love beer, this is the place you need to be. There are a lot of places where you can drink different local beers. The athmosfere is amazing.
