While being that close (the Dom) worthwhile to throw a glance and realise how life could have been in that time. Having such huge buildings to accommodate the serving staff adds to the imagination

We were in Bamberg on a guided tour in July when the flowers were in full bloom, most notably on the exterior of the old residence which was beautiful. We were only in the courtyard area of this old residence. This was the original bishop's palace that was built in 1576.

Back in the 11th century, a fortress, great hall, chapel, and Episcopal Palace once stood where the Old Court House stands today. Although we did not go inside, original masonry pieces (fragments, really) are contained here; it is presently Bamberg’s Historical Museum. The Old Court, located opposite the New Residenz, still contains fragments of masonry from the great hall and... More

A lot of reviews here mention that The Three Musketeers was filmed here; I haven't seen the film, so that did not add any charm to the attraction. I would recommend going early, or late, because it gets very busy during the day with tour groups. The courtyard itself is the attraction, so it's difficult to appreciate it when there... More

The Alte Hofhaltung (Old Court) was built in 1591 and was once the Bishop’s headquarters. It is located near the Bamberg Cathedral. This beautiful half-timbered house overlooks a large courtyard. Our tour guide suggested we see “The Three Musketeers” filmed in 2011 as it is the place where one of the duels in the movie was filmed. We learned this... More

This is beside the cathedral and just through the old gate. It is impressive and interesting if done as part of the rose garden and cathedral but on its own is nothing impressive.

Most people seem to wander around outside but you get great views and a close up look at the inside of the old buildings from the museum, whose entrance is opposite the shop in the courtyard. The most impressive part was a 30 stall shippen, beautifully restored, currently housing a very lovely photography exhibition of Italian everyday life: Italien! Italien!... More

So the tourguide told us that these were the backdrop of the movie "the three musketeers" and many others and you will recognize why. This is just near the cathedral (dom) and must visit when you are in that part. Such old buildings will take you to a magical century :)
