Beautiful palace, reflecting the ages in which the dukes lived in it in splendour. Nice view on the city of Gotha. A lot of paintings, especially portraits. A pity that only of part of them, the names were mentioned. Also many objects from the age in which dukes and kings in Europe gathered strange things from all parts of the world, to stress their interest in sciene and their wisdom.. Much emphasis on the 'fact' (?) that the first duke is ancestor to almost all contemporary kings and queens in Euope... NIce old ducal theatre.

Allow for plenty of time - the entry ticket includes also the Herzogliches Museum and the Eckhof Theater. I easily spent five hours in total looking at all the displays, with a break in between.

It was my second visit over years. I would come again if I have a chance. One can see and learn a lot. Audio-guide was very informative. Much about history, some stunning rooms and objects of art. It is quite chic, showing a major European monarchy hub at its highest power and luxury.

The palace building is absolutely enormous! The portion open for touring includes the living, reception, and function rooms of the royals plus a guest bedroom that Napoleon and other luminaries slept in. It also has several rooms full of precious objects from the royal,s “cabinet” which means, their personal collections of everything animal, vegetable, and mineral that they found interesting. The royal theater is also a gem - you can see pictures that under the stage, there were tracks and mechanisms to slide scenery in and out which was an amazement for the time and more complete than any other of that era today. It was surprising that so much architectural detail and so many objects are still in good shape, considering the age and WWII. Apparently the intermarriage of these royals with the British royals kept them a bit safer than otherwise. At the end of WWII some items were stolen by the capturing Americans and then later the Soviets hauled more away, but over time as the stolen items resurface on the art market they are being bought back and put on display after restoration. Do rent the audio guide. I tried to ask a couple of questions of the staff in my terrible German and 3 out of 4 were sweet and tried to help, but like other tourist sites in Gotha, signage is German only. Since there are audio guides in English, definitely jump on them or you will have no idea what you are looking at.

It’s an amazing surprise to find a sight that interesting when you’re stranded in Gotha with about two ours time and no idea about the local history. The building is impressive, information provided plenty and the museum definitely worth the visit - I recommend planning a trip not just visiting accidentally as I did. Thanks to the museum staff, who told me what rooms of the interiors to go for, as I had such little time! I really enjoyed the exhibition and hope to be back soon!
