Obersee is a small natural lake just to the southeast of Königssee (lake) near Berchtesgaden. You can visit by way of a short walk from the Salet stop at the southern end of Königssee for those who take the round trip boat ride across the popular lake to visit for tourists in the area.
From Salet you make a 15 minute walk to the northern shore of Obersee before following the trail along the western side of lake, through the woods and along the shore. Views of the clear waters are really nice, some beautiful picture taking opportunities until you reach the southern end.
At the southern end of Obersee, there are some other trails and longer routes through the Berchtesgaden National Park for those doing long distance hikes. You will also find a short 30 minute hike opportunity from here to the south, arriving at a meadow with fair views of Röthbachfall (waterfall).
From the southern shore of Obersee, you can also make a rest stop at the small restaurant here to try a glass of buttermilk, a beer or some local cheese while enjoying the lakeside environs. Then just return the way you came back to the Salet boat dock for your. return boat ride on Königssee.

A beautiful lake. Perfect for a swim in the summertime.
Definitely worth the boat trip on Konigssee to get here. Don´t spend too much time at the stop at St. Bartholomew's Church, otherwise you will miss out on this gem.
There are also a couple of restaurants here to grab a meal or something to drink.
I was lucky to witness a gathering of the beautiful butterfly species Papilio machaon on this island. This butterfly I´ve never seen more than one at a time back in Norway, and they are quite rare, but here there was around 15-20 of them next to the walking path.
Most tourists just kept on walking, but some others did like me, and got some nice photos of this beautiful species.

Königsee is not possible without Obersee. It is a pleasure to experience the beauty of nature early in the morning. And finally, a visit to the Röthbach Falls is also a must. Here, however, the last few meters of altitude are very difficult.

We tried to walk here from St Bartholomew's as the ferry doesn't go there in winter. We did our research beforehand, and, it is doable, if you are fit and adventurous. There is a non-signposted trail to Schrainbach waterfall, but this won't take you all the way. You have to go off the trail. It gets intense in parts. We only allowed 5 hours for our attempt and this wasn't enough to be back for the last ferry at 4.30pm in winter. We got close though. Add another couple of hours and it is achievable, and really good fun in getting there as the path literally disappears, but there are signs of previous hikes that keep you heading in the right direction.

Lovely, lovely spot. Truly. The crowds are insane. Way too many people - and no peace and quiet. That was exhausting and unexpected. If you go more than 2 miles into the journey, it starts to thin out but for the first 1.5 miles it’s bumper to bumper traffic.

My absolute favourite day of my 4 weeks in Europe!! Konigsee was nice, but OH SO CROWDED, I waited an hour and a half to board the boat to cross Konigsee, luckily I had researched Konigsee & Obersee on TA and thanks to some great reviews I stayed on the boat to Salet. The walk to Obersee was so beautiful as I came across many cows (with their bells) chilling around the walking path, they love a pat. When I got to the sensational Obersee there were hardly any tourists, and wow, how spectacular this lake is, and the photos!!! I then did the hike (took about 30 mins) around to Fischunkelalm to the gorgeous little farmhouse where I indulged in a nice cold beer and a platter of yummy cheese, pickles & ham. I didn't want to leave.

Hiked to the other side of Lake Obersee. Beautiful little place to get beer and good cheeses/snacks on the other side. You lose most of the tourists after the first boathouse at the beginning of the hike (so many people there!) and didn’t see many people on our hike.
Make sure you can do stairs as there is a stairway passage above the lake in one spot. Jagged and slippery rock steps but they have a cable to help you hold on.

If you are taking the boat ride along lake Konigssee then take the ticket to the last stop - Salet. From there it's an easy 10 minutes walk to lake Obersee. The walk itself is very refreshing with amazing scenery. Once you reach the lake, there is nothing much to do except click pictures. You can come back to Salet and wait for the next boat to take you back. The boat ride timings are easily available online. Knowing them beforehand would save some valuable time.

A short 10 minute stroll will take you from the futherest Stop (Salet), through the alpine meadow and to the boathouse at Obersee. From here you can continue around the lake and visit the traditional Bavarian farmhouse on the opposite side of the lake shore to get some butter bread, milk or just a cool beer. It’s a lovely way to spend the day and not nearly as busy as the first stop of St Bartholomew’s Church.
To do this trip and enjoy the views at a relaxed pace you will need at least 4 hours - including the ferry ride to and from Salet from the car park.
It’s worth every second - the water is so clean it’s transparent and the views are breathtaking.

Don't just take the Konigssee ferry-- get off at Salet and spend an extra two hours exploring Obersee. Amazing lake color, absolutely stunning lake in a mountain setting.

Hi... You can't... Accessible only by ferry, or a long unsigned walk...

Can we go around both Königsee and Obersee by BIKE, is there a Road around them? We do not want to take the boat. THANK YOU.

How do I get there from Munich ? Is it possible to just visit the lake Königssee during the day trip or can other activities such as hike can be done in one day ?

Hi, I am planning trip to Koningsee next autumn. But cannot decide mid Sept or mid Oct. I would like also to visit Obersee. A couple of questions:
1. Do the boat goes to Salet if we do the boat trip on 13th Oct.
2. Is autumn colours around Koningsee more prominent in Oct than Sept? I am trying avoid the high prices during oktoberfest by doing our trip to Bavaria Germany mid to end Oct instead of mid to end Sept.

We were there late September and the leaves had not begun to change. In fact, temperatures were quite warm, often in the high twenties (celsius). I suspect that is the new norm. The ferry always goes to Salet. It's up to you to choose where to get off and on both ways. Not sure about prices. All our hotels were full and I made sure to book 9-10 months in advance.

Some other reviewer mentioned about boat ride of one hour plus hike of 5Km. Your route was 20 minutes walk from city without boat. Can you please confirm and guide?

Hi,
This summer, I will be arriving at the Obersee ferry dock by foot. Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase a one-way ticket from Obersee to Konigssee on site, at the Obersee dock? I attempted to do this online, through the Konigssee ferry website (the Deutsch version). However, there's no online ticket option for a one-way from Obersee to Konigsee. Any suggestions for how to do this?
Thanks!
Martin
