Got a 3 day Harz Tour Ticket for 18 Euros (thanks Paul from Australia for tip!). Buy this from the bus station office at Wernigerode - not the train station. This allows you to go all over the network (except the Brocken Line). I am not a steam train fanatic, so just travelled on a few short routes. It will... More

The Harz mountains are absolutely ideallic - Steam trains on mainline services everywhere, just like it was in England in the 1950's. If you are going to be in the area for a few days, say centered at Quedlinburg or Wernigerode, think about buying a 3 day ticket and hop on and off the trains to your delight. Everyone is... More

A great way to explore the wonderful towns and scenery of this great part of Germany as well as being a 'must' for rail fans. It's worth using mainline trains and buses to short-cut some journeys such as Wernigerode to Quedlinburg which will otherwise take up a good couple of hours Staff are very helpful.

Probably the best place to go IN THE WORLD if you want working steam! At least a dozen engines can be seen daily, doing what they were intended to do.

I spent nine days based at Wernigerode and my main focus was the world famous Harzer Schmslspur Bahnen (HSB). It's a metre gauge railway network based on Wernigerode and most trains are steam hauled. The main attraction, undeniably, is the Brocken line that climbs 34 km to Brocken that was once an East German "listening post" and out of bounds... More

I previously reviewed "A Trip To The Brocken" from the point of view of a non rail fan. That review is at the end of this one. This review is for folks who are primarily interested in a awesome and probably unique train experience. The Hartz Schmalspurbanen has a magnificent collection of narrow gauge steam engines and equipment. The locomotives... More

Over 100km network with steam operation at least in part on all sections. 100% to Brocken. Travelling on the open air balconies is the best place to be, particularly if you're on the leading one on an uphill gradient. You'll get covered in smuts but who cares? Delightful scenery too, particularly between Wernigerode and Drei Ahnen Höhe

The roundtrip costs 39,00 € per person, but they have no restrooms in their rail stations and the trains. There are public restrooms, in Wernigerode you have to pay 0,50 € and on the Brocken 1,-- €.

We did this trip on the steam train when we left it was hot but as we went up the track it did get cold so make sure you do have layers to put on as when you get to the top the views are worth it but it is cold.the cost for two of us was 78 euros return.

The three railways that form the Harz Steam Railway (Harzer Schmalspurbahnen) cover 140km of track. There are 25 steam locomotives and 10 of them are operational at any one time. The really popular line is the Brockenbahn, which chuffs up the mountain from Drei Annen Hohne, easily accessed from Wernigerode. That is also very expensive and the mountain is in... More
