We read such good reviews of this perhaps expectations were high. It was a nice trip, not worth €39 each. The view is blocked much of the way by trees, but this is a forested... read more

A trip via steam train? Who can resist? The trip up is lovely very scenic and steep climbs for the train. We went in Dec in the hope of snow. We got ice, and more ice. This made it impossible to walk or go anywhere. While out of winter this is a great day out check in advance as for... More

Great service through the mountain and forests, train very busy even in Mid September, service round 365 days a year and with the restaurant at bar at the top of the Brocken even Christmas lunch is on the cards.

Highly unique opportunity for railfans. The working steam engines, railcars, and diesels are run in a professional manner and reminded me so much of the same mix of activities in North America in the late 50's. I rode the steam and a short trip on railcar between Quedlinburg and Alexisbad and then next day did Wernigerode to Drei Annen Hohne.... More

We were lucky to get clear blue skies on the day we travelled to the summit of the highest peak in the Harz Mountains. There is a little bit of walking at the top but I managed without dufficulty despite having my leg in a brace. Great views from the summit but also interesting because the summit used to house... We read such good reviews of this perhaps expectations were high. It was a nice trip, not worth €39 each. The view is blocked much of the way by trees, but this is a forested area. The train itself was good, real steam, nicely maintained. They charge an extra €1 each to sit outside in the open caboose. The view... More

If you crave a look at how steam railroads all over the world once operated, this is the experience you want. The Hartz Schmalspurbanen is a a working steam railroad that carries freight and a lot of passengers. The most popular trip is to the top of the Brocken - the tallest mountain in the Hartz. Leaving Wernigerode every hour... More

Boarding the steam train in Wernigerode was that moment when you start to turn back the clock. This is a special journey as the train twists and turns through the trees and stops at small stations along the way. It stops and waits for passing trains as it is all single line which adds to the atmosphere. Near the top... More

It is an old set of steam trains (Dampflocken) that brings you in a quiet pace up the Brocken. There yo can make a short walk (Rundgang) It is expensive 39 euro pp up and down. If you use your traincard everybody can do the trip but we ..... We decided to walk downhill and use the break your leg... More

We were very lucky the day we did this trip. It had snowed the day before and was still very cloudy but as we climbed higher the sky cleared and the sun came out. So there were some views. The cafe at the top is very reasonable and if they have Goulash soup on I would recommend having it as... More
