Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is the world´s only replica of a Roman villa in Pompeii, which was built at the behest of King Ludwig I. The architect Friedrich von Gärtner succeeded in creating an ideal afterimage to study ancient culture through magnificent decoration and interior design. Inside you will find a lot of sculptures, utensils and ornamental ceramics from Roman times. There is currently a special exhibition of creations of ancient costumes.

Along the Main River in Aschauffenburg, Germany there is a beautiful walking path that leads from the Aschaffenburg Castle to the Pompejanum, an idealized replica of a Roman villa. Built by King Ludwig I the building houses Roman antiquities and provides visitors with a life-size realization of Roman living. More interesting for its builder’s interest in Roman architecture than as a true relic of the past, it is still worth a visit in a town that has risen like a Phoenix after being badly damaged in WWII.

I was surprised to learn about this replica villa upon arriving to Aschaffenburg and decided to visit it. I think it's also worth of for other fellow travellers to visit it. The building is a replica of a villa from the ancient Roman city of Pompei, the reason behind establishing it was that so the culture of the Romans could be educated for later generations. Unfortunately, just like the rest of Aschaffenburg, it received serious damage during World War II and had to be rebuilt in the 1960s.
Today the villa hosts a basic pernament exhibition on the ancient Roman lifestyle and also a temporary exhibtion on the second floor. There's also a spacious garden and has a romantic view on the Main river and the nearby Castle Johannisburg,
It's worthwhile to visit it with a combi ticket with the Castle Johannisburg, it costs ca. 12 EUR as of July 2014.

I had never heard of Pompejanum until the day we visited Aschaffenburg and we found out that there is a combo ticket for both Johannisburg Schloss and the Villa. Fortunately we had enough time to visit it.It's a short walk from the Castle, We crossed the bridge and reached the other side of river Main. Very nice walk following the path among so many trees and bushes. As the day was extremely warm for Germany (39 degrees C.!) the trees shade was a gift.
The villa was built in 1840 for the art lover King Ludwig I of Bavaria and it's a successful example of Pompeiis amazing houses and their famous frescoes.
The garden has stunning views towards Main river and the Castle, while the roses brighten up the landscape.I enjoyed every single minute there.

The building was modeled on a typical rich home in the days before the city of Pompeii was covered in lava. To visit this building is just a pleasant surprise in the middle of Germany.

Walking to the Pompejanum from the Castle is the best part. Yes, this is a model of a wealthy man's home from Pompeii; and inside there is an ok, permanent exhibit of Roman sculptures (...plus rotating exhibits) but it's the house, along with its fantastic setting that makes this museum worth a visit... if you have the time. Entrance price, by the way, is included with the same entrance ticket for the Johannesburg castle.

I visited here in October, unfortunately the place was closed to the public at this time of the year. the building is built in the style of a roman villa, and sits overlooking the river Maine. It would have been nice to see the inside to see if it matches the splendour of the outside. I think it would be a must see during the summer months, but even if you cant get in, its still worth a walk along the river to see it. its not far from the castle.

For some reason, the Germans love archaeology more than most people, and there are many places in Germany that are little slices of Italy. One such is the Pompejanum in Aschaffenburg, which recreates a small house in Pompeii ... complete with old sculptures, statues, mosaics and old pots half-covered in mock volcanic dust. It's an odd place to find here on a cliff overlooking the river. But if you happen to call into Aschaffenburg on (say) a river cruise, it's probably worth the walk to have a look at this place. However, I feel it's a one-look wonder. Also, there is a small entrance fee.
