Rheinfels use to be the largest castle in Germany, but only a small portion of it remains today. You get a map of the ruins when you enter then you can explore at your own pace! There are lots of little tunnels and rooms to explore. Bring a flashlight (or your phone) as some of the tunnels are completely black!... More

This was the second time to Rheinfels. Be in decent physical shape! You will walk and climb a lot! Self guided tour I took was informative. It does help if you know French or German. That did help. Felt free to wander about and take all of the pictures I wanted. Fair entry fee.

We arrived with hopes of a nice visit. Before heading into the castle we decided to go to the cafe/restaurant and get a piece of cake and a coffee. We ordered and asked 2 times if there was any nuts in the cakes, since one of us is extremly allergic. - No there wasn't. We get everything and we ask... More

We were staying at Schloss Rheinfels so we figured we should see the ruins of the castle while we were there. It did not disappoint. The castle was HUGE. Lots of views of the river and just a lot of cool exploring.

The museum provides a background of the Rhine Valley history but the most exciting part is climbing to the top where the flags are to have a wonderful view of the Rhine.

Lovely old ruins with beautiful views and lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Be sure to wear good shoes and watch where you are walking... I'm sure there have been many twisted ankles here!!

This was a great castle to explore. There's a little train-taxi thing that will take your from town center to the castle. The museum in the castle did a good job. We used the Rick Steves' guidebook in the castle and found that to be more informative than the handout provided.

The very imposing castle was built in1245 by Count Dieter von Katzenelenbogen for the protection of Sankt Goar tax collectors. It soon became the mightiest fortress in the Rhine Region. In 1479 the last of the Katzenelenbogen Counts died out and the ownership of the castle passed on to Counts of Hesse.

After arriving in St. Goar we boarded a shuttle which took us up to Castle Rheinfels. Setting high atop a hill (most castles along the Rhine are high on hills - the better to spot the enemy as he approaches) it was a beautiful vantage to appreciate the Loreley Valley, the Rhine River and lovely St. Goar. Stunning scenery and... More
