About
Be aware that the last entrance to visit the museum is 45 minutes before the closing time - HR GIGER IS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS SWISS ARTISTS. He was awarded an « Oscar » in 1980 in Hollywood for the movie « Alien ». He was the designer of the Alien beast and different other biomechanical creatures. The artist was born in Coire in 1940. Giger has given to Gruyeres a different dimension, a wonderful attraction: two worlds completely opposed. One traditional and the other one fantastic. The visitor penetrates in the biomechanical, surrealistic and mind-blowing place. The museum is open since 1998. Most of its twenty rooms are reserved for Giger’s work: paintings, sculptures and furnitures. His private collection is shown on the third floor artist such as Coleman, Dado, E. Fuchs, Schwarz, Steve Leuba, etc. A bar completely designed by Giger built on the left hand side of the Museum is the last living master piece of the artist where the atmosphere and the sensation are incomparable.

The museum is a series of paintings and artworks with zero explanations / narrative of sorts. There were just a few lines per painting saying the title, artist and year. There was no audio / written guide whatsoever. I really like museums and I was very disappointed by this one.

The museum and bar were the highlights of our day in Gruyères along our 8-day trip through Switzerland! We were absolutely fascinated and excited as we wandered through and experienced the amazing & unique creativity of HR Giger’s work. He was truly a visionary who helped create an alternate world of demons and aliens that brought movies to the next level; Aliens, Prometheus, and Species to name just a few. The museum and bar are both worth experiencing; the bar is one of the most unique I’ve ever been to and includes a little shrine to HR Giger above the taps behind the bar. The soundtrack / playlist at the bar is also on point and helps support the amazing atmospheric design and ambience of the space. Overall, I not only think the museum and bar are a 'must do', but possibly great reasons in themselves to ensure you include Gruyères in your travel plans!

If you know H R Giger from Alien movies you'll love this museum. Within the historic building in Gruyere, the museum has sketches from the movie layout, models, pictures & sculptures. You have to take time to look at each individual piece, as the details just keep coming.
There is a section for adults only, but some of the other exhibits have a 'risque' feel to them.
Thoroughly enjoyed this museum

Visited this museum in November 2022. I think most people are aware of HRG's work for the Alien film trilogy, which features his bio-mechanical highly stylized work, although the museum features not only HR Giger's own work, but his own private collection.
Not for the faint hearted, there is an adults only section, and this continues his themes of carnal desire, surreal dreamscape, nightmarish horror.
It's a real treat to have visited, highly recommend - and go with an open mind.

The visit to the museum really was incredible. Seeing the images of Alien so close is amazing, it's like being in the movie!! There are also sketches that Giger made for the film, quite curious, a lot of his own sculptures and the roof has works by artists from all over the world from his private collection. Admission costs 12.5 CHF. Right in front you have the bar, fully characterized. An excellent imitation of the alien ship. A good option to visit. Totally recommended.

The HR Giger museum in Gruyères offers a dive into a world that is both captivating and disturbing. The works, mixing biomechanical aesthetics and nightmarish visions, are impressive and sometimes disturbing, but that’s what makes them so interesting. Each room tells a story, with a dark atmosphere that encourages reflection.
A must-see place for fans of extraordinary art and bold science fiction. Don’t miss it if you like artistic intensity and gore!

A very exciting and thought-provoking exhibition of surreal, nightmarish art worth seeing.
A bit of a strange location in the middle of a medieval setting a setting from outer space.
What bizarre mind was able to create all this and that so long ago.
The museum is quite small, but well worth a visit.

A museum visit that will leave you wondering what sort of mind created such work! Go with an open mind and enjoy the weird world of H.R Giger! The art work is dark, and pornographic, but also thought provoking. We went with our children (21, 17 and 14) who were old enough not to be silly about what they were seeing but we were all still a little shocked! I wouldn't take kids any younger.
Definitely worth visit as is the H.R Giger bar which is fantastic inside and serve great cocktails. Staff in both museum and bar were fab.

If you're a fan of creepy, sexualized alien themed art, this place is for you.
The inspiration for the creatures in the Alien movie franchise and other art make this stop worth the trip. The mind of H R Giger must be a very interesting and scary place ( a good thing ) That it's located in a scenic and picturesque castle / village makes it even more of a treat

I visited the HR Giger Museum on Museum Night on November 11, 2023. The exhibition (as you already know) takes a little getting used to; his talent, on the other hand, is huge. Unfortunately, there was a kind of performance by Louis Fleischauer, which I personally found very borderline. Many people left the room after a few minutes. And although art should of course be encouraged, songs about "Satan" (as in this case) should not be played at such an event, especially not in Giger's museum...

Will the museum be open in september 2021 (the 18th)? I was amazed to find an H. R. Giger museum and it would be the cherry on top of an amazing vacation to see it. I know covid has kept a lot of businesses closed but it would be a dream come true to see his work with my own two eyes.

how much is entry in to the museum in equivalent English pounds sterling?

Hello, any idea if the museum be open on 30th and/or 31st Dec 2016. I have included Gruyeres in my Swiss itinerary solely for the purpose of going there, so will be grossly disappointed if it isn't. Thanks!!

Hello, Do you from Alicante (Spain) the best way to go? Also, is possible to take public transportation to the Museum?
Written 22 February 2016
Hi Natalia. In fact, I don't work for the museum. Don't know why that note is in my profile... Anyway, when I was there, I rented a car, but I remember seeing public transportation. From Alicante, I dunno. Have you checked easyjet, ryannair, or vueling? Perhaps there are flights to airports in Switzerland? Best.

What is the best way to get from Paris to the Giger Museum? (In August, if that matters.)
Written 29 July 2015
the best way is to get to Bern, or Geneva! From Bern it will take 1h45min with 2 changes - in Ramont and Bulle. From Geneva it will be a longer trip - 2h30min. It's all up to You! Don't forget to have a drink at Giger's bar :-) good luck!

What is the best airport to fly into? What is the best way to get from the airport to the museum? Train or bus? I will be traveling from the US.
Written 3 February 2015
Geneva is probably the closest airport if you're coming from abroad. Renting a car is a good option, as it gives you flexibility to drive around the area. The museum is just a drop in the vast ocean of wonders in the place, so car is the best. Staying 1 or 2 nights in some city nearby is not too much to check attractions.
