About
Everything began with the dragon. It made its lair deep into the longest Slovenian mountain, Mt Košuta. When it grew into a large beast, it split the mountain in half. An avalanche came rumbling down, burying the settlement under the mountain. To save themselves the residents rushed into the valley. After a while they ran out of breath and stopped. The mountain stream flowed into the river at exactly that spot. They liked it. They rolled up their sleeves, built houses and founded the town that is now known as Tržič. This was a long time ago. So long ago that in 1492, exactly two months after Columbus discovered America, Tržič was not just a village, but already a square. Every few centuries the town of Tržič was renovated, as it was burned down to the ground by fire. This is why it is the only town with a two centuries old fire protection and the then mandatory use of metal doors and shutters, which was a European peculiarity. Tržič had also its own castle on top of the hill, which sadly burned in one of those fires. This happened when it was owned by the world-renowned Austrian Field Marshal Josef Radetzky, famous today for the eponymous march composed by Strauss. Radetzky replaced the burned-down castle with today's mansion. He was held in high regard by the people of Tržič due to his generosity. Since there was a lot of traffic in this area already in Ancient Roman times, the people of Tržič reinvented themselves to become very enterprising ironworkers, wheelwrights, textile workers, tanners and above all shoemakers. The rich collection in the Museum of Tržič and the famous event "Šuštarska nedelja" are evidence of this glorious crafting history. Today, Tržič is a pleasant old town, protected as a cultural monument. This is a place worth stopping at and listening to its countless stories. By the way, what happened to the dragon that took credit for Tržič? It was buried by the same avalanche that it caused. Lucky for the visitors of Tržič, otherwise it would still scare them today.

Tržič is partly frozen old industrial city. It is a small town with one old road at the right bank of the river and a new one at the left bank - with very average new architecture. Lower part of the settlement has some empty buildings of former textile factory. Old part has few interesting houses and local museum. On Sunday you will not find an open shop, just some average bars. You will find some information with Qr code.

Nice attractive medieval town is hidden from the main road. But it is worth to make a detour. The old part of town is set along river Bistrica. There are some really nice old houses with shops and restaurants-pubs, big church and museum. Trzic is - was - famous for shoes production.

Medieval town, with some shops, not typical turist town and thus very precious to see. Nice to visit in begining of September where a big fair is going on, with emphasis on centuries long shoe making tradition. Or in May when MINFOS (international days of minerals & fosils) is taking place.
Tržič is also home town of Bojan Križaj, legendary alpine skier from 1980's (friend and rival of Ingemar Stenmark) and many other sport champions.
Stopping in Tržič on your way to Austria via Ljubelj pass would be a good idea.

This is a nice old (hidden) town. You can see a lot of influences of the different cultures of the past.

Coming from the main road, you'll see (old) factories located in the lower part of the city. The centre has actually one main road, and it's pretty nice walking there for a bit, viewing over the small river, etc. Pretty quiet. Nice to have seen. Not very touristy but that's how I like it.

Trzic is interesting small town to visit. It's not typical tourist town, but it has beautiful surroundings and natural attractions. It has a great history of shoe production. Nice place to visit.

you can drive-through the old town with a car - and get the feeling how cute it is; a short walk reveals more, if you make a few deviations from the main road to publically accessible inner yards of some houses. but except on a few special ocasions during the year, you might find the old town rather quiet and empty, with occasional local sitting in one of the bars, trying to guess what on earth you are doing there :)

We came here by chance and were surprised.
A walk in the old town leaves you full of
impressions of how things must have been
and how they are now.
It´s full of old buildings - lots to see...
