Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

1. We picked the wrong day as the sea was very calm - choose a day when the sea is rough and you will have a proper show

2. The winding path goes uphill twice in stages. Wear comfortable trainer type shoes as the man made jagged rock paths are hard work. I mistakenly wore flip flops and I suffered and spoilt my experience as I was worried about breaking them.

3. Be aware that along the paths the smell is not good as many locals home have fish drying in the sun.

4. Make sure you are fit and healthy. You will struggle otherwise to go up the rock paths.

5. The cost is very very cheap - 500 rupees. However difficult to say how that money is reinvested to make a better experience (improve paths and make them safe and enclosed from local homes).

Incredible place of water making a beautiful blow and then going up through probably a hole in the rocks near shore.
I and my husband are feeling so lucky due to a mysterious thing happened to two of us there about 26yrs ago.
Must watch place if you are in the area
Needs a refurbishment of the roads leading to this for sure

A thrilling experience with family. Took some nice photos and videos of the sprout from the Hummaniya blow hole. Been here before but brought the family for the first time. The moderate windy conditions helped to beat the hot sun.

Few people might have visited this place. But if you r passing by, its definitely worthwhile here. The walk to the blow hole has some good views. Fresh juice spots on your return to quench your thirst. Overall worthwhile visiting

The “Hummanya” blow hole is a well-known attraction in the Dikewella region of Sri Lanka. We have to turn right at Kudawella and keep going for about 1 km. Next, we have to climb quite a few shallow steps to reach the point from where this blowhole is visible. On the way up there is a tiny museum and some wash rooms. The view from this point is breathtaking. You can see beautiful rocky cliffs and blue green expanse of water. The blowhole itself is a natural wonder created in the middle of this cliff. There is a gap through which seawater comes gushing up with a loud hoooooooo sound. At that precise moment it gives the impression of a tall fountain. The water pressure builds up more or less every 15 minutes and sometimes the stunning spray can rise as high as 100 feet. Seeing this blow hole is a really heady experience.

Hummanaya Blowhole is the only known blowhole in Sri Lanka and it is considered to be the second largest blowhole in the world.refers to the noise, "hoo", that can be heard a distance away when the blowhole is active.

When is the best time to go? Well the blow hole is most active when the seas are at their strongest time. That would be the peak of the south west monsoon period. I asked some residents that we got friendly and we were told that July to August would be the best time to see the blowhole activity and according to my friends who's been here before the water sprouts every minute or so and supposed to be a good sight.
When I went in May it was a lull period. 25 rupees is the entrance for locals and 250 for foreigners. I had to wait for 15 mins till it sprouted for the first time and it happened at interests of around 15 mins. The surrounding area is quite beautiful though. The blow hole it self is in high ground and you get a amazing view of the surrounding areas. We took our phantom drones and got some good videos.
Now going to hummanaya in the active season brings it drawbacks as well. Firstly Since the seas are rough you wouldn't be able to enjoy the beaches in the south coast. Secondly since it's the off season for tourist in the south west it will be bit more boring to stay in the area. I would only stop by if I was going to Yala or some part of the east coast and I took the southern highway and exited through Matara. Since I am a frequent traveler I think I might get the chance to see it in its peak and will write a review on how it looks during its peak.

Whilst it is a little bit out of the way - it is the only natural blowhole in Sri Lanka. It can either be spectacular or fairly mundane depending on the ocean conditions. You will need to pay a small fee, which includes entrance to the visitor information centre (the centre is not worth the visit). The blowhole has a low metal fence around for safety. When we were there the seas were relatively calm so it wasn't particularly active - so I can understand people's frustration when visiting but it is nature at work and doesn't perform on demand. The views up and down the coast are impressive.
However coming from a place which has numerous blowholes it lacked impact.

on the drive from Yala to Melissa, this is a nice stopover. of course even though the blow hole wasn't in full force due to calm waters the sight of deep blue waters of the Indian Ocean and breakers was stunning. lovely place to take a small detour Enroute
