- Lyn B2 contributionsThe night tour is FABULOUSWe did the night tour with one of the naturalists and it was a wonderful experience. At night time is when they feed the animals so you are walking around at dusk and in the dark with lanterns and the kangaroos and wallabies and possums are all around you. You get to feed them! (except for the nosy possums), including going into the the enclosure with the gliding squirrels to give them nectar! The guide was informative and passionate about the animals and their wellbeing; we learned a lot, and we felt we were encountering the animals close up without endangering or intruding on their living spaces. All in all - recommend 150%.Thank you for taking the time to recommend us with such a lovely review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your visit and meeting our awesome animals and staff. It was great value and I’ve never been so up close to native animals before. We got to feed lots of wallabies and some kangaroos plus get really close to koalas, wombats and more. The keeper talks were very informative and all the staff were cheerful. The food and gift shop were well priced. We had a great time and will definitely return.Thank you for your great review! We're thrilled to hear that you had such a positive experience during your visit. It sounds like you had a fantastic time engaging with our wildlife through our activities like the keeper talks and kangaroo and wallaby feeding. Your support means the world to us, and we're delighted that you had such a memorable and enjoyable day at the sanctuary. We look forward to welcoming you back again to create even more amazing memories with our furry and feathered friends!Written 26 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 December 2023

- Cat TBerkeley, California13 contributionsReally is the best place to see Aussie animals! This was my first time visiting Australia and I wanted to see as many Aussie animals as possible so we came here for a few hours and we all really enjoyed it! The highlights were listening to a laughing kookaburra, watching a flying squirrel soar through the air, a huge wombat digging a hole in the ground, a koala out of the trees running across the ground, and feeding the kangaroos and wallabys. Highly recommended!Thank you for such a lovely review. - Cherie KMelbourne, Australia51 contributionsSpoil yourself with a Moonlight Private Night TourBooked a private night tour for a Sunday evening. Wow! What a great experience. We got to see the Australian native animals that you miss at the daytime zoos. The tour was ran by Claudia who was very knowledgeable and passionate about animals. She was friendly and just great to chat with. To have a guide that was a very experienced keeper made the tour extra special, she shared so much interesting knowledge. You have an opportunity get up close with and feed and the Wallabies, squirrel gliders and many more. Definitely worth the extra spend for a private tour.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 April 2024
- TheLeongOhanaUnited States7,575 contributionsSee and Interact with Australian AnimalsWe stopped by the Moonlit Sanctuary on our way to Phillip Island. It only took around one hour to drive from our condo in Docklands. The gravel parking lot wasn't full but there were a couple of buses and we found out inside that they had disgorged groups of school children. It looked like the sanctuary must be popular with school field trips. Luckily the sanctuary was fairly large so we could zig while the school groups zagged. We purchased our admission tickets at the gate along with one container of wallaby and kangaroo food ($3AUD). There was an additional charge for any up close encounter you wanted to do with the animals. We skipped this and tried to attend as many of the free keeper talks or shows as we could. The schedule was posted online and on the maps around the park. Of all the animals we were able to see, the highlights were seeing the Tasmanian Devil, wombats, pink cockatoos, and dingoes to name a few. All animals were actively moving around during our mid-morning visit except for the koalas who seemed quite content to sit in nook of their trees. We fed both the kangaroos and wallabies and surprisingly they were very docile and gentle while feeding. We even got to pet them and found their hair to be a bit coarse. A small cafe was located by the front entrance and had covered outdoor seating. The gift shop was also here.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 May 2024

My husband and I took our 3 young grandsons to Moonlit Sanctuary as we thought the would enjoy feeding the kangaroos and meet and pat the koalas. We chose Moonlit as it was only a 60 minute drive compared to 1 hr 46 minutes to the wildlife sanctuary in Phillip Island. The entry fee for the 5 of us was $72 plus an additional $100 ($20 each) for the koala encounter. Food to feed the kangaroos and other animals is $3.00 for a small jar. They recommend 1 jar between 2. We purchased 4 and it was enough. Food at the cafe is basic. A child's cheeseburger and chips or 2 chicken tenderloins and chips will cost you $12.50
each. We enjoyed our time at Moonlit but it was a very expensive 4 hours. We only got to feed one wallaby. The others were all resting for the entire time that we were there and you are not allowed to go behind the barriers even if they are on the perimeter. If you are wanting to visit Moonlit with children and you want to feed the kangaroos, our recommendation would be to go late afternoon as kangaroos come out at dusk. In summary we thought Moonlit Sanctuary was overpriced for a limited range of experiences.

we visited the sanctuary on an extremely hot day. we were very uncomfortable to see koalas, wombats and other nocturnal animals interrupted from their rest and natural schedules to perform for humans. we had purchased tickets for the wombat encounter and when we expressed our discomfort with waking up the animal and pulling her out of the burrow to be pet while she was clearly sleeping and too hot (90+ degrees F), the guide tried to coerce us into doing so anyway. the whole experience of the sanctuary felt highly profit motivated and not at all about animal welfare. hardly a sanctuary. they even told us that they walk some wombats on leashes…all in all, would not recommend at all if you are concerned about animal welfare.

Hi Cailey
We are very surprised to see this negative review as our team recall your visit and were under the impression that you had a very enjoyable day, doing not only the wombat encounter but also the dingo and koala encounters.
We appreicate your concern for our animals but be assured that they get the very best care.
Our keepers would never pull a wombat out of a burrow, and even if they wanted to, it would be near impossible to do so. Mary, the wombat you are concerned about, loves her encounters. She is usually out of her burrow perched on a log waiting to be made a fuss of and get extra treats but on the occassions she is still having a nap, her keepers do no more than call her name to see if she wants to take part. If she does not want to take part the guest is refunded. We do not make our animals do anything they don't want to do, they always have choices.
As for the wombat who walks on a harness, he also would not do this if he didn't want to. He was trained in this behaviour before coming to us but we wouldn't take this from him as he enjoys it so much but on days he doesn't want to go for a walk, he doesn't.
We do try to make a profit, as without profits we could not run our many conservation programs for endangered speices but animal welfare is always our priority.
We believe that interacting with animals provides an opportunity for people to learn and educate themselves about different species. The bond that is formed within this interaction can then inspire change in the daily lives of individuals to contribute to the conservation of different species from home.
Moonlit Sanctuary is accredited by the Zoos and Aquarium Association and works to provide the highest levels of animal care. I hope this eases your concerns. Thank you for visiting us and supporting our conservation programs.

I visited with overseas guests at the recommendation of a colleague. The experience was much more commercial and regimented than my colleague had described from previous visits. Yes, you see the wildlife, but it was very busy on the day we visited and was a very average experience. The hairy nosed wombat seemed distressed, with repetitive pacing behaviour, the interaction with animals was limited and it seems that the layout has become much more restrictive than in the past. Yes, you will see native Australian animals, but I would recommend Healesville Sanctuary over this attraction for loads of reasons.

We had a wonderful day at Moonlit Wildlife Sanctuary. We purposefully booked here as we didn’t want to visit a zoo and preferred a sanctuary where the well-being of the animals was the priority, and we clearly felt that here.
We did a few encounters; koala, python, and wombat and we loved them all. Mallee was the sweetest koala, Crystal the python had beautiful colours, and Mary the wombat was a queen. The staff were absolutely brilliant, so friendly and they could tell you any facts about the animals in question. It was clear they have built relationships with these animals and that their well-being was the priority.
The park is huge and there was never a sense of animals being crammed in, they had so much space and seemed very content. Another highlight was the gorgeous kangaroos and being able to feed them as they roamed (or bounced) freely around the sanctuaries. On top of this, seeing the dingos being walked regularly around the park also confirmed for us that they are very well cared for.
Overall a fantastic day seeing such incredible wildlife in a sanctuary that is clearly ethically run. I would highly recommend to anyone, especially if you want to avoid a zoo due to moral reasons and to be honest, this was even better than a zoo. Thank you Moonlit!

Amazing day with our 6 y.o.granddaughter walking around the Sanctuary.
Driving to the Sanctuary from Mornington Peninsula beach took only around 30 minutes.
Plenty of car parking out front and you go to Reception and scan your QR CODE which we received with our online booking.
It took us approx. 3 hours to walk around, where we hand fed kangaroos, birds and wallabies.
They were just so friendly!
There is a nice Cafe on exit where we sat at tables (COVID19 spaced of course!) and enjoyed an ice cream and coffee.
There is a gift shop at the cafe to buy souvenirs if you wish.
Would recommend!!

The sanctuary is great. It was a great experience and a great way to see the kangaroos up close and get to feed them.
The workers were also really helpful.
The only thing I was a little disappointed at was the Koala encounter as it costs $30 and all you can do is stand behind her koala and get a picture (you can pet it but nor hold it).
Overall I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to see kangaroos and other native animals.

I went on the night tour a few weeks ago and it was a memorable experience, especially the barking owl and free-roaming kangaroos. It was incredible to get up close and personal to so many different native Australian animals.
The weather was a perfect night sky, which was surprising as it had been raining most of the day. Claudia was an excellent guide, answering questions with extensive knowledge making the experience very immersive.
Hoping to come back and visit soon

Visited with family. Was amazed by the number of wallabies and Kangaroos that were in enclosure. Was very impressed with the staff and keepers. All were very helpful and knowledgable and they obviously love the animals very much. Very peaceful sanctuary with beautiful wetland area. Both teenage girls had a Koala encounter got 15 minutes up close to koala which they were very happy with. We've been to Healesville many times but was booked out so gave Moonlit a try. Did not disappoint and was a lovely way to spend the morning on nature feeding the wallabies and Kangaroos.

I’m looking to go from Melbourne. Is there any public transportation both ways?
Written 25 January 2024
You can take public transport to within about 10k of the sanctuary, but after that you need to arrange a car. We found it extremely easy to reserve an Uber to pick us up at the sanctuary at the end of the tour, and to get an Uber from Frankston or Cranbourne stations (either one is the closest - they are on separate train limes).

Hiii. How much is the parking fee at moonlit sanctuary wildlife?
Written 11 June 2019
No parking fee. You only pay an entrance fee.
Get there before 10.30 am if you would like to do the sessions with a Koala . It makes it easier.

Hi there,
I and my wife are planning to come to Melbourne on Dec. 30, 2017. If I am not mistaken, all the day tours to the Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife, that I found through internet, only provide standard admission to the park and may arrive later than the available times for Koala encounter at 11:00 am or 1:00 pm.
Do you know any day tours that provide guaranteed standard encounter package with Koalas?
Written 4 December 2017
We attended on a tour and the timings worked well for us.
I would email them and ask if they can help.
Please note that the State has a no handling policy. You can pet it but not hold. My wife enjoyed taking a selfie with a koala. Some states allow you to cuddle a koala. Try aptly named Cudilee creek near Adelaide.
This place is worth a visit and

I thought it might be interesting to head there first after leaving Melbourne. We could do the day tour, camp that night, and come back the next night for a night tour. Is there a campground you might recommend that will give us plenty to do that next day? Maybe on the beach? TIA

Big 4 Beacon Resort was great! They offer camping and rental cabins. They are also located directly across the street from the beach. A 3 minute walk at the most

I'm planning to stay overnight during 18 March. Now I'm not sure i should go for penguin parade or Moonlit Sanctuary evening tours? or
is it possible to go after penguin parade?
Written 1 February 2017
I don't see how you could do both. The penguin parade is at sunset, when they come back to the island. The Moonlit evening tours are are approx. 1 hour, at 5:30pm and 7pm. It is about an hour drive, without any traffic, between the 2 attractions.

I am planning to drop by on the way heading back to Melbourne from Phillip Island, is there any public transport available?
Written 9 January 2017
If travelling back from Phillip Island the only option would be the 10.18am bus from Cowes. You would have to get off the bus at Cranbourne where you would have to get a taxi to the Sanctuary (18km/20min). This should get you to Moonlit Sanctuary around 12.40pm. Please check timetables prior to your journey.
