- JJJourneysSingapore, Singapore2,508 contributionsUNESCO archaeological siteThe UNESCO World Heritage Site of Delos is an interesting half-day tour from Mykonos and offers a window into the lives of ancient Delians. Much of the site was excavated as is, meaning the buildings you see are pretty much what was preserved from the past, though some of the buildings are being reconstructed. A little hard to wrap your head around just how long these structures have withstood the sands of time. Best to visit on a guided tour, at least there is someone around to explain the significance of the site. Most tours depart from Mykonos and run for about 4 hours, which will give you an introduction to Delos, without much time to explore on your own. Morning tours start at 10 am. If you wish to have more time, to walk up Mount Cynthus for example, I would suggest coming here free-and-easy. Be sure to check with the boat operator the ferry timings to and back to Mykonos. The Delos Museum is currently not open, do note.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 31 October 2023
- LSQRD1Kent, Ohio871 contributionsExpansive site--be preparedWe booked a guided tour through our hotel and were not disappointed. The tour included the ferry ticket, guide, and site admission. We were debating about whether or not we needed a guide but are glad we picked this option. The site itself is large and interesting. I would not want to visit in the heat of summer as there is no shade and much walking. Make sure you wear sturdy walking shoes and a hat..plus water and sunscreen. I do recommend a tour since it helps the understanding of what you are seeing.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 May 2024

Entrance is €8 and they give you a guide map free. It’s quite a large site and is hilly in places with the sun and winds this is not for the faint hearted. You can wonder through the ruins and take your time we had 2 hours here and that was enough. We had no guide but we had researched the island before we went so knew its history, Unfortunately the museum on site was not open and the staff were not sure when it would reopen, you could use the toilets which is just as well as the toilets at the entrance to the site were out of use. There is also not much shade to wait for your boat to return to pick you up if you have finished with looking around. Or to take a break when looking around. With the museum being closed we were quite disappointed we were not informed at the entrance which I think they should, staff were not very helpfulVisited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 July 2024
- DreamtowanderOrange County, California166 contributionsEpic Island if you Enjoy ArcheologyWe took the day group tour from Mykonos to Delos with a Guide through Delos Tours. The boat ride over uses the ferry which can be unpredictable, but it worked well for us when we were there. Our guide found us on the ferry and introduced herself. She was an excellent guide with extensive archeology knowledge. She gave us a great tour of the ancient city. I was amazed by Delos - an entire island archeological site untouched by modern conveniences (no hotels, no roads, no cars). You can really appreciate what it would have been like thousands of years ago. The ancient ruins were amazing.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 August 2024

Wanted to see that place while i was on mykonos. The place tells the amazing history of ancient greek and rome. Unfortunately the organization running the place is really badly organized. After we paid the ferry we arrived on delos just to learn that the entrance fee has to be paid to enter delos. Note that without the entrance fee there is nothing on the island you can do. So we went in just to learn, again, that the museum, which entrance fee we paid for, was closed. In the end all that made the trip feel like rip off.

This was such an amazing place to visit. In order to get to the island, you do have to take a ferry. Have some medicine on hand in the event you get motion sickness because it is very windy in Mykonos which makes for rough seas. There were a few times that felt like the boat might capsize. So don't sit outside! Be sure to bring sunscreen and water because there isn't really a place for shade and no where to purchase water. Now on to the review. This island is like walking through ancient history. It is fun to imagine the glory that Delos was in it's day. There are so many ruins that you can really get a feeling for what a city in ancient Greece was like. There are several beautiful floor mosaics that have been surprisingly well preserved. Take the time to wander around after your guided tour, if you have one. However, watch the time because you don't want to miss the boat back. There was small gift shop, but we were not able to check it out because we ran out of time.

A total must in the area; I enjoyed Mykonos as it is beautiful, but I prefer cultural and historical experiences. If you are the same you cannot miss the oportunity; I'd recommend getting really early and leaving on one of the last boats. Do not forget to take comfortable footwear as you will go crazy walking all around the place! Many cats too, they seem happy there haha

We went on the first ferry of the year on April 1st, more for something different to do that out of interest, but the site is amazing, due to its sheer size and number of artefacts. The ferry got us there about 10.30 and we only finished exploring at about 1.00, half an our before the ferry returned. We climbed right to the top of the site and took lots of pictures. Some of these places - you cant imagine anyone living there due to them just being a couple of rocks or outlines of buildings, but this was a whole city !

Wonderful visit. I really enjoyed it. Huge site with lots to see, including lots of places (not mostly the main monuments) where you can wander amongst the ruins. I particularly enjoyed doing that in the theatre district and near the House of water. Beautiful views from the top of the mountain. I did not go with a tour group, but felt I was fine with some reading (mostly the wikipedia entry) in advance and following an online map (I didn't get one given), plus the pretty good plaques. Plus that way I got to feel more adventurous and go off on tangents on my own. The museum was closed, which was disappointing. But at the same time as I took the evening boat that arrived at 5:30 and left around 7:45, I felt I had just enough time to see the core of the sute, so would gave been rushed if the museum was open.

A big highlight of our trip! We had a wonderful!!!!
I am not sure it is worth paying the extra cost for a guided tour. A good guide book and map should be sufficient.
It was an opportunity to learn about ancient civilization. Place is greatly preserved, easy to access.

This is one of the sites in Greece that should not be missed. We had an extremely rough boat ride from Paros (1.5 hours) and we were glad to get our feet on steady land. The rough boat ride was worth it, though, because this is an amazing place. We had our own guide, who pointed out the salient sites and then gave us time to wander round on our own. There are a few things to bear in mind. There is no shelter so, if the sun is out, it can get very hot so don't forget the suncream and wear a hat. There is no where to buy any refreshments so remember to bring your own. This, especially, goes for drinks so don't forget to bring bottles of water. As out tour also went to Mykonos (where you can get all the refreshments you need), we only had about three hours on Delos; more time would have been appreciated.

Really as a site for history and beauty it’s up there with the Parthenon. Came from Naxos and 3 hours was barely enough even with the museum being closed. Worth the walk to the windy top of mountain even though nothing historic there. Don’t miss the mosaics on southern side of site, especially the House of the Masks which is off to the side a bit. Very well restored.

We toured Delos as part of a 6 hour excursion from Mykonos. Total time at Delos was apprx. 90 minutes with a tour guide. The site is expansive and the guide focused us on the highlights and the mythology associated with this ancient site. You would need double the time we spent to explore the entire site. There are temples dedicated to many cultures throughout and the famous Terrace of Lions to explore.

Hi Soria1023,
I do not know the answer to your question. Sorry!! Logically, there should be no reason why camera and associated equipment should not be allowed.

Is it necessary to book a guided tour or we just can pay for the visit?
Written 9 February 2020
Good question yes You can just visit and see the museum but the tour guide is definitely a bonus unless you have a background in archaeology or history .
It was definitely a plus and also helps support the local guides .

is it possible to reserve online also the tickets for the Archeological site of Delos?
Without the guided tour.
Thank you

Hi Christine,
What tour company did you use for your trip to Delos?
Thanks
Julia
Written 25 July 2018
We did not use a tour company. You can just go to the old port in Mykonos and buy a boat ticket to Delos. When you arrive in Delos, you buy an admission ticket to the archaeological site. There are guides right inside the site who offer their (paid) services or you can take along a guidebook which explains the site - your choice.
I would suggest you get to the dock early to get your boat ticket to Delos. There are lots and lots of cruise ship passengers taking the same boats to Delos.
