We listened to a recorded commentary on the locality / history / geography during the 10 minute drive to the jetty and then regular comments from our knowledgeable jet boat driver afterwards. This meant that our tour of 9 were fully briefed on a whole variety of interesting topics, quite apart from really interesting information on the kotuku (white heron)... More

Visited the sanctuary with a group of photographers and other keen to see these beautiful birds close up. Great value for money and knowledgeable commentary, Dion able to answer questions as well. Birds still courting, others with eggs which we could see in some nests and at least 3 with small chicks. Ideal time of year to visit and would... More

The service was absolutely outstanding, they helped me with my lost back without any hesitation. They were nice and helpful! The place was nice and clean but again the people were the reason why I would recommend this acomondation to everybody, in these times it is very hard to find as kind people as you can find here!

If you're looking for somewhere to just sleep the night on route along the west Coast then this place is ideal. Clean, tidy and comfortable bed. Over priced for what you get but ok for a basic night stopover.

Fun jet boat ride down the river, saw lots of birds. Docked in the reserve and short walk to the hide. I was a bit worried about the walk but it is decking and flat with just a few steps from the boat an up into the hide. Seeing the white herons, spoonbills and shaggs nesting was an amazing experience... More

Thoroughly recommend this trip. I didn't expect to get such a great view of not only the white Heron but Spoonbills and Shags as well. The viewing hide is opposite the nest site and even with my mobile phone I got lovely photos. Binoculars are available so you can observe the scene in close up. We had plenty of time... More

The White Heron Sanctuary is one of New Zealands premier Wildlife experiences. While related species are common in Asia, the New Zealand White Heron is a small population which only breeds at the White Heron Sanctuary. The trip there is via jet boat and the driver Dion is very knowledgable about the birds and the jet boat trip itself is... More

This is the only place you can see a nesting colony of white herons in New Zealand. A jetboat ride then walk along a boardwalk brings you to a hide just across the river from the colony, giving a great viewing and photo opportunities. The birds are so used to it they carry on unperturbed, and several come quite close.... More

We highly recommend this trip to everyone who visits South Island. It had been recommended to us by some friends as the best trip of their holiday and we fully agree. It is efficiently run by Ken and his team and every aspect had been well thought out for the benefit of the customer. It was a privilege to be... More

9 Local (West Coast) Rotarians having a social weekend together decided to experience an iconic WC attraction. First attempt unsuccessful as heavy rain had made access impossible. Second try and it was all go.The whole trip was an adventure--bus ride through interesting countryside, jet boat ride and then boardwalk access to the hide where the spectacular sight of nesting white...
