Off the beaten track and only open by appointment I wasn't sure what to expect. We were warmly greeted by the Head Gardener Becky and given a tour of the garden and a glimpse of it's history. If you like everything spick span and orderly this is not for you. If you want to see a long neglected Victorian Garden being brought slowly back to life through skill, love, enthusiasm and sheer hard work - VISIT!! It is a joy to see - almost a glimpse back to another era, it has a very special atmosphere. Becky's enthusiasm is a tonic. We were left to wander around and then enjoy DIY tea and biscuits in the old summer house, out of the cold Spring wind (it is an exposed site) with stunning views of the Wye valley and birdlife. Well worth organising a visit if you are in the area.

The gardens have a couple of public open days each year, one in May to see the rhododendrons and one in August for the summer flowers. Otherwise, I'm told, groups can visit by appointment. In the walled garden is an automatic weather station run by the Met Office which recorded the country's coldest November day on record! This is one of the few walled and formal and informal gardens, once typical of great estates still to be seen in this part of Wales and certainly worth a visit.
