About
Nostalgic Car Museum in the Peak District. We're going to take you on a journey... a journey featuring British companies and the people behind them which were at the forefront of a transport revolution. The heroes of our journey are the cars: NOT a random selection of old vehicles but a carefully chosen selection of cars made in Britain which changed the world for good. Admission comes complete with an interactive audio tour and one especially for the children, so our car museum is ideal for classic car enthusiasts and families. Open 7 days per week from 10am - 6pm (last entry 4pm) with late night opening until 8pm on Wednesdays for the summer (last entry 6pm). We have also just opened our cafe to ALL on weekdays! For the summer we have a kids number plate hunt, DeLorean rides available Wednesday to Saturday and kids go FREE on Fridays! Situated in Ambergate, Derbyshire, in the Peak District and just off the A6.

- Des C83 contributionsGreat British car museum well worth visiting.Went to this museum on a coach trip Friday 10th November 2023. Had an excellent two hour visit. Found it very interesting with a vast display of British built cars. The museum is well laid out and you could get close up to the cars to look inside them. It was nice not to have any foreign cars on display. I recommend a visit to this interesting car museum. So pleased to hear you enjoyed your coach trip to Great British Car Journey and the cars on display. - ChrisC_2010100 contributionsWonderful museum and meeting place for car fansI joined in April 2023 on recommendation and am so pleased I did. To be able to see and poke my nose inside cars I drove the same marques when younger (the Sierra, Escort, Montego and Mondeo) again is fantastic, but on top of that there’s so many more to see and in some cases drive. The staff are always excellent, nothing is too much trouble (and when I lost my membership card recently Becky very kindly sorted another free of charge - thank you!) and you always get a very warm welcome from all the team. Nice little cafe with hardworking youngsters, nice to see kids being given opportunities locally too. On top of this there’s some excellent events throughout the year free to members - all for a membership fee of about 80p a week! Have recommended and will continue to recommend to all who could be interested. Thank you!Thank you so much Chris for the wonderful review of our attraction and the Great British Car Club - we are so pleased to hear you are enjoying and making the most of your membership! Really appreciate the kind words about the team. - JANE TLincoln, United Kingdom44 contributionsGreat display of cars!Greeted by a very nice man who gave us and device on arrival. The device gave good information as you progressed through the different eras of the car industry. Also codes available to scan which provides more detail for each car. Great display of cars set out so you walk through time. Great cafe which offers cake, sandwiches or main meals. I had the pie which was really tasty my hubby had the chilli which he said was lovely. Great value for money and nice clean environment with friendly staff. We!! Worth stopping for lunch. You need to allow a good few hours for your visit and longer if you want to read all the info on your device. Please be mindful that the cars are kept in an industrial unit, so it was very cold when we went in December. Wrap up and wear some gloves!!So pleased to hear both you and your husband enjoyed such a great visit. So many beautiful preserved and restored great British classic cars. A real trip down memory lane for sure. The staff are very helpful friendly and knowledgeable. The audio guide was very interesting. If your a petrol head. Love or just like cars. This is one place you must put on your bucket list to visit. 10/10 from me.Thank you for taking the time to leave such a wonderful review Christopher. We didn't drive any of the vehicles as we had driven many of them over the years however it looked like lots of people were having lots of fun. - Peter B21 contributionsGreat British Car Journey? A Must See!I found out about this amazing place from Steph the "I drive a classic" Youtube channel, a site I have followed for a few years now. Then I discovered it was in my home County of Derbyshire, just twenty miles away! Really friendly people, one of the reception staff offered to look after my motorcycle helmet as I walked around. Great food and service in the Filling Station. The cars themselves, so interesting with lots of background information from the hand-held pod thing they lend you. Just perfect. I'm going to become a member and get the discount on actually driving some of these iconic British made cars. Totally recommend this venue. A great ride/drive to there as well. Fabulous roads and scenery.Pete, this is so wonderful to read - so pleased to hear you discovered us via the lovely Steph and idriveaclassic! Great to hear you are joining the club(!) and becoming a Great British Car Club member, which means you will be able to visit the attraction as many times as you'd like throughout the year, including ALL events and exclusive member events too! - Duncan C3 contributionsA full-throttle blast down memory lane! When we realised our holiday cottage was just half an hour from this excellent museum, I persuaded the family that we just had to go! I did feel a little guilty dragging my elderly parents along for what is a personal passion, but the way the museum is set out and the stories it reveals are as interesting to social history buffs as they are to old car nuts! Driving Dad’s car was a bonus - in my case a melodious V8, bright yellow Triumph Stag. The most abiding memory will be just how friendly and enthusiastic the staff were. They clearly love what they do, and who can blame them!It was meant to be Duncan! SO pleased you managed to get everyone along and the whole family enjoyed it too! We found this attraction hard to rate.
The good:
There are a huge range of cars to see. They are really good examples of fantastic cars and enthusiasts will not be disappointed.
There is an audio tour available that comes with a laptop so that you can delve deeper into the detail if you’d like to.
There is a lovely little cafe and plenty of parking. Toilet facilities were clean.
There is the chance to drive some of the old cars. They started at £50, which seemed ok. We had planned for my husband to do this when we got there but when we realised it was a 20 minute drive up and down the car park he decided against it.
The not so good:
It’s hot. Really hot. So avoid going during the summer. The type of building must hold the heat because it was actually hotter inside than out, with no air. This made it a really uncomfortable visit and we rushed through as quickly as we could. There’s obviously nothing that can be done about this but it’s probably only a problem during the heat waves we’ve been having recently.
It’s overpriced. Two adults and one child cost just under £50. Although there are lots of cars to see, that’s all there is. And unless you’re a fanatic, you’re not going to spend hours here. The entry fee could have got us a lot more elsewhere, we felt.
It’s not particularly suitable for children. It’s aimed more at older people - those who remember the cars from the 50’s to the 80’s will have a great trip down memory Lane! But those who don’t will probably be bored after the first 10 minutes.
We’d highly recommend a visit for those who absolutely love cars, but we probably won’t go back ourselves.

So pleased to hear you enjoyed the range of cars available to view and find out more about by utilising out interactive audio sets.
Glad you liked the cafe and facilities available too.
Regarding your comments about Drive Dads Car - our driving experiences are very reasonably priced for the choice of cars available. The driving track is almost a mile long, so you will have only seen the part that runs down the length of building up.
The building has been heated by the unusually hot weather we have experienced lately. We do open windows and doors to aid this but if there isn't a breeze obviously this doesn't help either.
Our Adult tickets are £16 and children are £7.50 (an extra £1.50 if the child has a device), family tickets are available for 2 adults and 3 children for £40, which we believe is very reasonably priced when compared to other similar or local attractions. Therefore for two adults and one child you should have been charged £39.50 or £41 if they had a device, so if you have been charged almost £50 in error then please do get in touch and we can sort this out.
Lots of children do have a keen interest in cars and we have enjoyed lots of happy smaller customers over the summer holidays! We do also have activities available for children via specific audio tours for them to help keep them entertained.
Thanks for providing your feedback.

We all had a very enjoyable afternoon at the Great British Car Journey, which tells the story of the British cars which people in the UK have owned and driven over the last 100 years.
Many of the cars are very rare now, and the examples at the museum are in great condition.
The electronic audio boxes were easy to use, and gave good information on each car.
A summary, printed by each car would, however, be useful as the head sets are a bit isolating and it's good to reminisce with other visitors without needing to wear the 'phones all the time.
The highlight for me was driving the Austin Ruby, dating from the 1930s. Great fun.
I appreciate it may be hard to do, but a stretch of private road round the countryside would be preferable to the industrial estate.
The drives are also limited to weekends only, which is a shame, especially during school holidays.
The co-driver was friendly, and helpful,

Great place to visit if you are at all interested in cars and their history in the UK. We made a detour to visit the museum on a trip north and glad we did. The number of vehicles exceeded our expectations and we liked how many of them were in a 'used' condition, or 'daily use' type of condition, i.e. very good condition but not bulled up restored show cars which are more common in museums. The audio guide seemed a bit fiddly at first but was actually very intuitive and easy to use and extremely educational. It explained a lot of stuff I'd forgotten and some I hadn't known in the first place. We also liked the QR code feature where you could delve into a bit more detail on a chosen vehicle. Clean toilets, nice cafe and very pleasant staff throughout. We had limited time on the day, so will return to drive one or two of the cars as this is another feature available at the museum. We also happened to meet Mr Usher as we were departing the car park, he approached us and was keen to find out our thoughts on the museum. Has the feel of an individual family type business rather than a faceless corporate style, which we like. Highly recommended.

Hi there, many thanks for leaving us your review and we're glad you popped in!
We are the only car attraction to use the interactive device with the headphones and is a stand out feature of the tour.
Hopefully we'll see you back again soon at Drive Dad's Car.

Wasn’t particularly keen when this was suggested but was pleasantly surprised. Very well thought out with a large range of beautifully restored British cars. QR codes very helpful. COVID aware venue with lots of ‘hand sanitisers’ dotted around, headsets (which are included in the entrance fee) are sanitised after each visitor. All the staff very friendly and helpful and there is a small cafe where snacks are available.
It would be interesting to maybe have the bonnet up on some of the more powerful cars?
Many thanks.

My husband and I spent a couple of hours at this museum yesterday. It was well organised and we had checked on availability prior to our arrival. The small electronic devices provided which contained the information were easy to carry around and also easy to use.
Each section of the museum contains cars from the same decade and so is easy to follow. The signage is clear and there is lots of information available both on the electronic device and on signage around the cars.
It was nostalgic to see cars we had both owned and driven and also very interesting to see some cars that had interesting histories and stories related to them. There is a large number of cars on display and they were all of interest in one way or another.
There was plenty of parking available and also toilet facilities and a small cafe, that was partially open due to the Covid restrictions in place at the moment. There is also a small 'gift shop' selling a limited variety of items related to the exhibits in the museum.
You can drive a car around a track, something we did not do on this occasion but might well do in the future.
You are asked not to touch the cars nor get into them, sadly there was one elderly man who, presumably, had not read the signs and had to be asked to stop opening the doors and sitting in the cars! This was done politely and very discretely by a volunteer at the museum.
We will definitely return for another visit.

An interesting trip down memory lane although it does not take long to go around for the money, none the less it was nice to see the cars which could do with some information boards besides them,we were offered the headsets for the guided tour.
When we entered we were told that the cafe was open today but would not be serving meals until 1 pm as there was a group booking - fine but as it took so little time to go around i thought we would try to extend our visit by going to the cafe at 12.30 !
Big mistake - even though another "ordinary customer" had just been served i dared to ask for a meal,we were told very abruptly by an obviously stressed man that meals were NOT being served and were you not told this upon entering !
A more customer friendly lady offered us a drink and scone with jam and cream which turned out to be stale and served with spray cream.
So a worthy car museum but don't go expecting food unless of course you are a group booking.

Apologies but we had a large group booking of 50+ in and eating with us. It doesn't happen very often but reception had informed you that due to a group being with us hot food would be served from 1pm. When you visited the cafe at 12:30pm you were reminded of this, and we can only apologise that this came across as abrupt. The person before you had only ordered a pastie, which were available to all and from 1pm though everything was sorted and normal service had been resumed.
Regards the scone, we do actually use fresh cream not spray and had no other complaints about the scones served that day but we'd have happily replaced it, if informed at the time. Again, apologies your visit didn't live up to expectations.

Lovely place, friendly staff but the technology and headphones killed it for me. Had to pay extra so my son got one in first place as kids tickets don't get one automatically, hes a teen with an interest in old cars so wanted to know the information. It was like a library walking round no one talking just listening to the information pumped through the headphones. We went round twice once with headphones once without so we could talk about the cars, point out the ones I had grown up with etc.
I can appreciate they don't want big notice boards up every where but I don't feel the headphones are the right thing.
The cafe was good value with a limited amount of merchandise available to buy.
We made our visit last 2 hours (hardly the day out I was expecting) that includes a stop in cafe and going round twice.

Hi 824vivkyi,
We do appreciate that the interactive device and headphones can feel like you can't communicate with your group, but the audio can be paused and resumed from where you left off if you want to talk about the cars in the collection.
We have gone down this route to make the journey interactive and allow you to discover as much or as little about the individual cars as you like.
Best regards

An immersive, interactive experience from the moment you step inside!
A well orientated display of some really special vehicles, representing the decades of British manufacturing. Accompanied by audio-visual guides, interactive posters, additional QR codes and extra details, these vehicles are perfectly staged through the generations - each with it's own personal tale.
True enthusiasts will be enthralled by the accessibility of nostalgia! The smells, the textures, the manufacturer details... no glass walls or tape here, you're invited to respectfully view and enjoy these vehicles up-close.
Family friendly featuring a refreshing café, there are also incredibly modern toilet facilities onsite and ample parking (plus the drive in through the A6 is wonderfully refreshing!)
This isn't just a motor museum, it really is a sentimental exploration of British history, a guided tour through time, a colourful documentary... a Journey.
A MUST VISIT!

Excellent, one of the best museums we have visited. Friendly & helpful staff. Good large Café with choice of drinks, snacks and meals at sensible prices, with wide range of merchandise for 'petrol-heads' and less enthusiastic visitors.
We spent 4 hours which included 45 minutes for lunch & rest. There is so much to see but all vehicles are well spaced and the electronic guide must be a class leading device - excellent, so you can immediately select a vehicle you are interested in, see the main details about it and for many of them listen to 'an interesting story about it'.
The whole visit is taken at your pace, no pressure to move on to the next within a set time. This was our first visit but we will be returning and plan to drive one or more of the vehicles around the 1 mile circuit. Thoroughly recommend this attraction - well planned, full of interest and provides a real welcome to visitors.

Hi David, many thanks for your review. Very comprehensive and sounds like you really enjoyed your visit.
If you are planning to visit again, you may want to look into our newly created Great British Car Club. In addition to 12 months access to GBCJ, you get a whole host of extra benefits including discounts on Drive Dad's Car experiences.

Most of the cars on display are what you or your friends and family would have either owned or apsired too. There are a few sports and exotic cars but most are highly relatable.
Some of the cars can be driven too for an additional fee. Great gift idea for something a bit different.
This museum will appeal to the casual visitor as well as the motoring enthusiast or social historian.
You can casually wander around for a couple of hours or spend more time getting fully engrossed in the excellent and well researched audio visual guides.
Also a great attraction for a wet day.
A great deal of thought and effort has clearly been put into the design and display of the museum and the careful selection of the vehicles, many of which are now very rare but give a valuable window into the past and a trip down memory lane.
This is also a great meeting point or refreshement /lunch stop for classic car clubs or anyone touring Derbyshire.
The museum was spotless with excellent cafe, toilets and friendly, knowlegable staff who greeted me warmly when I arrived in my Triumph Stag.
Easy to find on the A6 and with a large car park and disable access.
Top marks, will visit again.

Thank you for taking the time to leave such an outstanding and comprehensive review of your visit to Great British Car Journey.
Your kind words on all aspects of the attraction are very much appreciated and mean the world to the team.
We obviously have a unique car collection and the amazing Great British Car Journey story to tell, but it's people like you, your amazing cars and own stories that we love to hear about too!

Personally I disagree with Nicks comments. I saw no rustbuckets there. Just a slice a well maintained british motoring history. All good.

All looked good to me the triumph acclaim had a few bits but nothing to distract from an excellent collection its probably fair to say a lot of cars of the types on show in there became rust buckets hence why their are so few left the museum is a delight and an amazing trip down memory lane I'll certainly be recommending it
