- Margaret R4 contributionsExcellent day outMy adult daughter was given a voucher (plus 1) for the private owl experience on the occasion of a milestone birthday. We had a fabulous day. Good value for money as it included entrance to the gardens and to the flying display plus the opportunity for us to fly 3 different owls. We arrived at 10am which allowed time to walk around the Botanical Gardens before heading up the see the flying display of 5 different birds, excellent commentary and skilful handling of the birds by the falconers. We then flew 3 different owls with the assistance of a falconer who was very knowledgeable and helped to make this a memorable day. We spent the rest of the day walking around the gardens. We need to go back as we ran out of time to see everything. Well worth a visit, highly recommended but allow the whole day.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 October 2023
- Laura B3 contributionsGet close to the owlsWe are regular visitors to the centre, but this was the first time we’ve done the Owl Encounter. We had an amazing time! We got up close with Alan, Frodo and Ozzy, walked with them through the beautiful grounds of the botanical garden and flew them to the glove. Emma really knows her stuff and taught us all about the birds, their personalities and their behaviours. A great day, thoroughly recommend!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 7 October 2023
- Amanda3662Manchester, United Kingdom43 contributionsA fabulous experience! The most amazing morning spent in the company of incredible birds and experienced and knowledgeable handlers. I booked a private owl experience and, due to the poor weather, I was expecting not to be able to fly any of the beautiful owls but Alex went above and beyond to be flexible - always with the welfare of the birds in mind - to make sure that we enjoyed our time at the centre. A big thank you to everyone, especially the awe-inspiring birds for making our visit so special. I would thoroughly recommend a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 October 2023
- Sara H1 contributionBird of prey flying experienceMy husband came along today for an encounter with four birds of prey guided by Alex. Myself and my daughter went along also(paid extra to spectate). Well worth it!! Alex was really knowledgeable with each bird also moving around the gardens and getting opportunities to take pictures in different areas added that extra touch. Alex even took some great pictures/videos for us to. Overall fantastic experience and would recommend to anyone.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 October 2023
- helen pBristol, United Kingdom1 contributionGroup Flying ExperienceAn absolutely wonderful experience, which I keep reminiscing on ! We had the group voucher, but it turned out there was only the 2 of us at the session. We had a long time with a black kite, feeding her on our arm, watching her fly free, and throwing food in to the air for her to catch. It was very special to see closeup how skilled, clever and beautiful this bird of prey is. The handler with us was excellent. Also really enjoyed looking at all the other birds of prey at the centre....the Eagles are huge!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 October 2023
- Pam S2 contributionsBucket list experienceI booked a Bird of Prey Experience which was on my "bucket list". Alex the falconer knew his stuff and was very friendly. Midas the golden eagle, Popeye the eagle owl and Aquarius the sea eagle didn't disappoint. It was a totally amazing experience and my husband took some lovely photos. Also saw one of the Flying shows run by Poppy, everyone so very friendly thank you so muchVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 October 2023
- Mr. BOxfordshire, United Kingdom9 contributionsPrivate Family ExperienceExceeded our expectations. We booked Private experience. Ceylwn/Holly was the best guide ever. Genuinely enthusiastic for her birds and showed us what to do. My 12 year old loved it and her confidence grew. We flew 4 different birds multiple times. Made some great memories. Worth every penny.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 27 October 2023
- AlHampshire, United Kingdom48 contributionsBird Experience handling - WOW!I booked the Eagle Experience and can honestly say, it was truly an amazing day! The centre is lovely. The birds all looked beautiful and the staff were really happy and helpful. I loved seeing a Goshawk in a display for my first time, very special toe as the last birds I saw with my Mum before she passed away. The Eagle Experience was something else though, I've been on quite a few different experience days but this was the most awesome, it can't get better than being up close and personal with an Eagle Owl, Golden Eagle and White Tailed Sea Eagle. Fascinating being to interact with these huge birds and being able to trust them because of how they've been raised so well there. I'd go back and do it all again in a heartbeat! If you've never held a bird of prey, give it a go, there are lots of smaller ones too! Well done to all the staff and volunteers, you're doing an amazing job. PS Thank you for photos and videos!Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 27 October 2023
- Mike A12 contributionsSmall but very enjoyable bird sanctuaryMy son (11) and I really enjoyed our visit. Whilst the aviary is pretty small, the show was fantastic and the additional experience with the black kite was great value and really made the trip. Staff were very helpful and friendly. We’ll definitely be back.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 October 2023
- Kass D1 contributionAwesome experience despite the dodgy weatherI bought my husband a half day flying experience back in March for his birthday. The first date we had booked the weather was horrific and we were asked if we lived locally and if it would be ok with us they could reschedule and hope for better weather. Obviously if you’re visiting from afar this won’t be an option for you and they will go ahead with flying the birds with you, but pack waterproofs and sturdy footwear just incase and you’ll still have an amazing time. The birds need some flying time every day so they’ll be out in all but the very very worst weather. As we’re only 20 minutes away we happily rescheduled, unfortunately for us our second attempt was an equal wash out with the horrific weather and storms we’ve had in summer 2023 and we rescheduled to fit in with our work schedules again. Today the weather was blustery and showery, but not the storm force torrential rain on the days we’d previously booked. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We dodged the showers, were warned that certain birds didn’t like the blustery winds ahead of the storm that is due to hit here tonight. But what an amazing afternoon. James our guide for the afternoon was so chatty and knowledgeable and passionate about the birds. My husband had the time of his life and his previously slightly bird phobic wife would love to repeat the experience as a proper pair and potentially try and hold one of the birds next time too. Thank you Alex, James and the rest of the team for a fabulous day. And thank you for allowing us to reschedule the first two attempts. Weather today wasn’t perfect, but was still a perfect day!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 November 2023

Excellent facilities with knowledgable handlers.
We visited the centre with our teenage niece and nephew from Australia (girl 12 boy 15). They were mesmarised watching the bird handlers fly the birds and listened attentivley to them sharing their knowledge.
We also paid for handling experience with the Red Kites, worth every penny.

An amazing experience! The flying display was spectacular and the commentry informative, entertaing and humourous. The experienced handlers encouraged the birds to show their amazing flying skills. I would highly recommend visiting the centre which is situated within The National Botanic Garden of Wales, Carmarthen. There is no better way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Today I blew away the lockdown blues by booking a flying experience at the British Birds of Prey Centre – and I highly recommend it to everyone! I’m a flying novice and didn’t realise just how much personality the birds have. Rusty, their young long-eared owl, is super adorable. He continually chatted to me during what can only be described as an antic-laden walk in the woods (I didn’t know owls could play hide and seek…). If I could have tucked him in my pocket and taken him home, I would have! Boomerang, a young kestrel, insisted he knew better how to arrange his flying kit and he wasn’t shy in telling the falconer so. Orchid, their barn owl, was pure class, providing a breath-taking demonstration of aerial agility whilst Mali, the Harris’s hawk, clearly thought we were crazy being out in a snow flurry. Last, but certainly not least, the kites delivered a masterclass in what it means to be a British bird of prey. As if the flying wasn’t enough, a walk around the aviaries introduced me to many other birds, from the majesty that is Atlantis the sea eagle – seriously cool! – to the smile of Margaret the snowy owl. I had a really fantastic morning with these wonderful characters!

A wonderful experience and well worth a visit. To be amongst the birds at close range was breathtaking and incredible. The team were so knowledgeable and shared very interesting facts, while keeping it interesting and fun.
I would highly recommend this and if you are at the gardens for the day, go to both shows as you see different birds in each one. The feeling of an eagle owl passing within an inch of my ear was something I won’t forget in a hurry, but you feel at ease too.

We booked a Bird of Prey experience with the British Bird of Prey centre and can't recommend them highly enough.
Our guide Rob was extremely knowledgable, easy to relate to and very confident in his handling of the birds and teaching us how to get the most from our experience.
We had a 2 to one private booking so had lots of time with the birds (entry to a show and the Botanic gardens was also included in the experience price).
We flew 4 different birds and with each one, Rob advised us of the characteristics of the birds, their history with the centre and a variety of species specific information. We got to ask lots of questions and really felt we had quality time, all with the welfare of the birds at the forefront.
If you are looking for a close up, fun experience I recommend you book with these guys.

We throughly enjoyed our owl flying experience today. Our falconer James was an excellent guide.
5 of us spent over an hour flying three beautiful owls and then went back afterwards for a thrilling bird of prey demonstration.
This was our third visit to the British Bird of Prey Centre. Each time we have visited we have learnt so much about the birds which has increased our enthusiasm for these wonderful birds.
The bird cages are so impressively clean and better than I have ever seen for captive animals. It is evident that these birds are very well looked after.
I can throughly recommend The British Bird of Prey Centre as a place to visit within the National Botanic Gardens of Wales. You will not be disappointed paying the small amount extra for entry.

Booked the 1/2 Day Experience flying 4 birds of prey. Poppy my Falconer was absolutely brilliant, she immediately put me at ease and was so knowledgeable about the birds. We got on so well, I felt as though I'd known her for years. Her passion for the birds she cares for is evident and anyone who has her to take them on this experience is guaranteed a great time. The birds were amazing and I felt so privileged that they trusted me to hold and fly them. Included in the price was the display show which again was a fabulous experience with the birds swooping near the audience. I highly recommend this half day to anyone who loves nature and learning about these fantastic creatures.

On Saturday 12th June we visited the National Botanic Gardens at Llanarthney and, for a small extra charge of £1.00, you can visit the British Bird of Prey Centre. We arrived at about 12.45pm and were told that there would be a flying display at 1.30pm (Time for lunch first we thought – Wrong!!).
We went to see the birds and then we paid an extra £3.00 each to watch the flying display of hawks, owls and even a Golden Eagle. We have done this before and it is very enjoyable. One criticism, the commentary was not clear because the young lady was holding the microphone too close.
For an extra £10.00 you can take part and actually fly the birds (they land on your arm). We had done this before so did not do it this time although it is really enjoyable and interesting.

Having come to the centre previously and throughly enjoyed the owl flying, we decided as our family treat on holiday we would book the half day family flying experience.
We were met by Seren and Boomerang and taken into the walled gardens before it was opened to the public, Boomerang flew round us landing on our gloves to be fed, it was a lovely relaxed start to the day. We then moved into the show area where we all got to fly the Great Grey Owl, who has no name - we agree with Seren and she should be called Fish. Manoka wasn’t so keen to fly as something had spooked her, but this was sorted quickly and meant we got to fly Bandit the Black kite once the 1st show was over. We also got hold Hector the Eagle Owl and watch one of the flying shows topped of with a lovely wander round the gardens and picnic.
Seren was friendly and extremely knowledge and there wasn’t a question she couldn’t answer. She put us at ease from the moment we met her - Boomerrang may well have helped with this. She rivalled our son with useless but interesting facts, something which is not easily done!
Thank you for a memorable experience, this is definitely the highlight of our holiday and still one of my favourite places to visit

I booked a group flying experience for my partners birthday, weeks in advance. Closer to the time I started to worry about availability, etc. Sent an email and had a lovely informative response from Emma who reassured me everything would be ok and also suggest going to the 2 flying shows on the day as each is different.
Arrive on the day everyone was friendly and helpful, decided to go with the 2 displays and so glad we did, they are incredible, unique and involving. During one of the shows the little owl (can't remember breed but named Lilly) flew straight between our heads. The birds are displayed in a way they can have close but safe interaction with spectators. At the end of the show the host mentioned the flying experience, of course the cat was out of bag then, as I had initially booked a place on the red kite experience however my partner wanted to fly an owl too so went to see Owen in the shop and he arranged a place for the owl flying too. Again I'm glad went for both, they are both unique experiences and performed in different areas to match the birds natural flying and hunt style.
At the time of visiting there was a handful of 2 month old Hawk chicks and a 3 week old Tawney Owl, and the owl was taken into main aviary area to be fed where my partner was allowed to stroke her back. Wonderful end to the day.
All the staff were very helpful, friendly and educated.
I highly recommend going for a visit, well priced, if you know you'd want to fly one I advised buying a gift certificate online as it works out even cheaper. If you struggle walking ask for a buggy at the entrance, and ask the Avairy reception to call another for the trip back down.
