- lasv32Belfast, United Kingdom853 contributionsHilly! But a good zooBe warned there are steep parts to this zoo. We had a good day. We went on a lotto day out with babies in prams and enjoyed the walk and animals. However the wasps are a nightmare and the smell of weed st the restaurant was awful. The shop is also very expensive.Hi Lasv18 Thank you for leaving your 4* review, we are pleased to hear that you had a great day with the babies, the zoo is hilly, but did you know that we do offer drop offs (bookable online) at the top of the zoo, so that you can take your time visiting the animals on the walk down. The smell that you referred too, near the restaurant comes from the maned wolf, who has a very pungent distinct smell, which they use to mark their territory over very large areas, and it is documented to smell like marijuana.Written 17 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 October 2023
- Laurie SDingwall, United Kingdom12 contributionsA lovely day out.I hadn’t been to the zoo in about 25 years and I was worried it wouldn’t live up to my previous memories of the place. However, I needn’t have worried as my wife and I had a lovely day. There were a great range of animals, and it was encouraging to see such a focus on conservation for many of the species. It was also poignant in a number of places, with many of the animals having been rescued from abusive circumstances and a number of the species having very few of their number left in the wild (with some extinct in the wild). Overall it was a great day and despite spending 4 hours there we could easily have spent longer. Also, the cafe did an amazing chocolate cookie!• We are delighted that you had a ‘zooper’ day out at Belfast Zoo and we look forward to welcoming you back again in the future!Written 22 January 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 January 2024
- wolfman227Hayling Island, United Kingdom39 contributionsMesmerising penguins at Belfast ZooDidn’t want to leave. What a lovely surprise to see as many animals as I did. Visited in early Jan (2024) on a semi cold and wet day. Didn’t expect to see much due to the weather but couldn’t go any other time. I enjoyed every minute of my visit. Lots of animals to see and photograph. Spent a lot of time just mesmerised by the penguins showing off. To explain…..they have a few areas where you can watch them swim underwater and it is obvious that a few of the penguins enjoy watching us humans back 😂😂. One in particular, when it knew there was someone at the window would swim down and then backwards and forwards to show off how easy it was for them to do so. Even at feeding time. Just breathtaking. Lots of different species of animals in the zoo so pick up the map in reception and follow the routes so you don’t miss out on any. Within the zoo there are lots of cafes, toilets etc. When you enter the zoo you will notice that it is on a slope of a hill. As such the first half of the route to see the various animals is uphill. Quite steep in places. I did notice that there was, on the right hand side as you go in, a sort of disability cart / bus service. Best call first. Plenty of free car parking .Thanks for giving us a 5 star review. We are glad that you enjoyed your visit. - Micky Doo-DahGateshead, United Kingdom6 contributionsLovely day out only a 15 minute bus ride from the city centreThere’s a great variety animals with a good price point. We visited on a Sunday so was quite quiet, not too many people to get in the way of seeing the animals. Some exhibits were undergoing maintenance but it didn’t take away from the overall experience, lovely few hours walking around and easily accessible from the city centre via bus. Thanks for giving us a 5 star review. - Megan J1 contributionDisappointingBelfast zoo was always my pick over Dublin but after visiting today I was left a little disappointed at how run down the zoo has became. It’s dirty, there was poo everywhere on the walkways, must be the peacocks lol, animals enclosures poor and half the animals are no longer there, or weren’t when we visited. Really shouldn’t be charging full price when so many enclosures empty or closed. One thing I do like about Belfast zoo over Dublin is that you can see the animal a lot more up close (elephants, lions etc). Myself, my partner and my 1 year old still had a good day don’t get me wrong but just felt a little depressing or something. The tree top cafe wasn’t great, coffee awful, muffin rock hard and stale, and not much to offer tbh, safer take your own food. Staff and zookeepers were lovely, really pleasant staff. Thanks for taking the time to leave your review, all comments help us improve our serviceWritten 12 August 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 March 2024
- Gillian W4 contributionsA lovely zoo to walk aroundI highly recommend Belfast zoo, with the stunning views from the hill. There are plenty of animals to see and the walk up the hill means that you can also see the wider Northern Irish landscape the further up you walk. The zoo is on a hill, which is part of the charm and if you walk the whole way around it you certainly have got your steps in for the day - the zoo does have a little transport buggy if you need a lift up to the higher parts of the zoo. The outside play area is lovely for children and that is not far from the zoo entrance. The café at the top of the zoo has hot and cold drinks and was a lovely pit stop. We enjoyed seeing the lions and chimpanzees!thanks for giving us a 5 star review. We are glad that you enjoyed your visit. - joanne m10 contributionsBrilliant day at Belfast Zoo..lots of animals to seeReally impressed with Belfast Zoo. Haven’t been in many years and last memory was not great with lots of empty enclosures. This time vast improvement…lots and lots to see..lots of different types of monkeys, giraffes, elephants, bears, lions, tigers, meerkats, reptiles, birds and a cute little sloths. Brilliant day out …my son thinks it’s better than Dublin Zoo. Unfortunately shop was being renovated which was a little disappointing and no chips/nuggets/sausages for kids at treetop cafe only sausage rolls, crisps, drinks which meant we rushed the last part of zoo to get down to lions den restaurant as kids were hungry. A better option of hot food at treetop cafe would be a good idea. All in all a really good day out at Belfast Zoo. We will be back !hanks for giving us a 5 star review. Booked the zoo mobile as my Dad is 95 years old and the zoo is on an enormous incline was a little unsure when I booked this but we were visiting him from England the hills was no problem for our guide Cat she kept my dad entertained all day long what a star we had a great tour followed by a lovely lunch at the cafe prices were very reasonable and of good quality as was the gift shop. - suzanne rDerry, United Kingdom10 contributionsDon’t go to the cafe! Zoo is goodThe zoo itself was fine. We saw lots of animals but our experience was marred by the Ability Cafe prices. No prices on display, apparently the TV screen where these are usually to be seen was not working. Strange because the last time we came, around a year ago, we were told the same thing. We had two ordinary coffees, two sausage rolls, two veggie sausage rolls, two fruit shoots and two Kinder Bueno. It came to £26.20! From the online menu, the coffees and sausage rolls should have come to £13.20. Couldn’t find prices for the rest but two fruit shoots and two kinder bueno could not possibly cost £13.Thank you for leaving your review. We are disappointed to hear about your experience in our catering facilities. The zoo’s Ability Cafes are operated by an external provider, USEL, however we expect the contractor to provide the high level of customer service that we strive for. We can assure you that your feedback has been passed to the zoo’s contract manager and the catering company’s manager to be investigated and addressed. The playground was great. The Lions Den cafe was very disappointing. We were charged £42 for food which was mostly inedible. The burgers were lukewarm and the buns were still frozen.Hi Thanks for taking the time to leave us a 4 star review! We are disappointed to hear about your experience in our catering facilities. Was there today with my wife and 2 children both under 4 on arrival at reception a gentleman with a (hearing aid this is the only way I can describe him) Asked me for my reference number which I had memorised he said that’s not your ref number so I produced my phone he said where’s your email I replied that is my email from the booking I made he was the most unhelpful “supposedly cust service member “ I have ever seen I would suggest he is moved to a different department where he doesn’t have to interact with customers he was extremely rude and unhelpful he told me to pass my phone under the screen for him to see my email I completely refused the screen is clearly there for a purpose. The zoo itself is not bad for the population we have that use it but is very tired and lots of the attractions are closed due to covid
On leaving the zoo you are forced to exit through the gift shop I did see a turnstile but we had a pram and had to go through the shop clearly designed to make your kids want some cuddly toys I get their idea but due to Covid they have a silly barrier up and screens which prevent adults from getting close to them but most definitely not designed to keep excited children out so when my 3 year old took off to find which toy he wanted and a member of staff started shouting at me I most definitely wasn’t impressed. At this stage I wasn’t ever and will never spend another penny in this place. If you don’t want anyone in the toy shop then close it up completey in such a way that children can’t access it. which will in turn stop your staff having to get all hot headed and shout at customers you clearly want to charge a fortune for stuffed toys but you want a 3 year old to stand 20ft away and pick what they want you can’t have it every way. Bottom line £30 to be treated like dirt
And spoken to like dirt by staff who most definitely are not cust friendly we won’t be back ever my 3 year old is still talking about the man at the zoo who shouted at him cheers for the memories Belfast zoo

Have just been to the zoo today and wasn’t too impressed with their social distancing measures. First of all you can’t stay as long but still need to pay full price, there doesn’t seem to be much of a limit on numbers being allowed in some people had to queue for an hour to get in. Then the reptile house was a joke no room to move and everyone on top of you someone should be managing this better. Add in the people standing right beside you makes it even worse although the zoo can’t do much about the idiots doing that. The kids had a good time but it just feels like coronavirus being ignored. Yea staff wear masks and zones closed off but we want your money so come on in.

We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your recent visit to the zoo. We want all of our visitors to have a good time and of course, to feel safe, therefore we have put several Covid-19 safety measures in place to protect both staff and visitors.
Our newly created, outdoor “Belfast Zoo Trek” follows a one-way system in order to allow visitors to view the entire zoo site whilst maintaining social distancing. We have capped our visitor numbers and staggered arrival times to avoid large queues and visitors onsite at the one time.
We have installed 40 sanitiser dispensers at various locations across the site, including entry and exit to the zoo, at entry points in to each of the three toilet blocks onsite and at the entrance to animal houses. Staff regularly check sanitiser dispensers are filled throughout the day. We have organised regular cleaning of toilets, benches, exit turnstiles, and animal houses during opening hours.
We have also installed Perspex screens at face to face points in the Visitor Centre.
Our Visitor Code has been updated to include new Covid-19 rules, and visitors must tick that they have read these guidelines before purchasing their tickets online.
We have installed signs at entry, along the one-way route, at viewing areas and at exit reminding people to social distance and to wash/sanitise their hands regularly to include before, during and after their visit. It is unfortunately not possible for us to staff the entirety of the 52 acre zoo site and as such, we have placed emphasis on the importance of visitor and parental responsibility to abide by the Visitor Code and maintain social distancing during their visit.
We apologise sincerely that the above measures put in place did not result in a positive experience for you during your visit. We are grateful for your feedback and have passed this on to the Management Team.

Was at the zoo today... Very stressful experience from start to finish. Large queue after 10 to get in... Surley prebooked ticketing that is required should speed the process up? One way system which is chocablock with people as everyone enters at the same time and time is limited so rather than being spread out outside everyone congregated together at the same things. Reptile house open and like a cattle market but things like the chimp house which is 1 way closed? Windows dirty, toilets dirty, nowhere near enough seating for such a large amount of people at the same time. Very dear for half the experience. It feels like the zoo is winding down with very few animals and no upkeep-we seen no keepers in the whole time we were there! Would not rush back.. Very disappointing and would not recommend.

We endeavour to make the animal habitats as natural as possible for the animals in the zoo. We apologise sincerely that the above measures put in place did not result in a positive experience for you during your visit. We are grateful for your feedback and have passed this on to the Management Team.

Staff were so rude. The red haired guy who works in reception needs to learn manners. Not happy. They wouldn’t let us in because they were fully booked even though the zoo was very quiet with not half as many people as usual.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. The health and safety of visitors, staff and animals at Belfast Zoo is our top priority and staff must adhere to procedures and guidelines in place. Unfortunately the maximum capacity was reached on the date you planned to visit. Visitors are advised to book in advance to ensure entry to the zoo.

My first visit to the zoo in quite a few years and it seems to have gone downhill from then. I would not recommend anyone to visit here, so many of the animals appear either very unhappy at best, if not disturbed. The elephants were showing repetitive behaviour, the chimpanzees were some of the most unhappy animals I have ever seen. The whole zoo needs at the very least a total clean up of the animal enclosures, if not closed down. Please do not go here, the animals deserve better

Very disappointed after a recent visit. Attended as a group of 5 adults and 8 children of various ages. Many of the animals were missing. We attended because a family fun day was advertised which turned out to be nothing more than a room with face painting. The price for adults is high (£14.95 per person) & value for money is poor. Very little aimed at toddlers so the youngest in the group basically just spent the day in their prams as they were unable to walk up the exceptionally steep hills. A hop on/off bus would greatly improve the experience. Areas of the site felt very poorly maintained. No staff were visible on site and we had difficulty in the picnic area when a peacock wouldn’t leave us and our food alone.

Prices for Belfast Zoo are approved annually by Belfast City Council’s City Growth and Regeneration Committee. Price proposals consider the entrance price of other zoos, other tourist attractions in Northern Ireland and economic factors. The zoo’s prices are in line with other attractions in Northern Ireland. It is regretful that you feel that the entrance prices do not offer value for money as we do endeavour to keep prices as low as reasonably possible.
While our unique Cave Hill location provides unrivalled and stunning views across Belfast Lough, we do recognise that the steep terrain can be difficult for some of our visitors. For this reason, we have included information on hill gradients on our zoo map which is available on the zoo website and at the zoo Visitor Centre. Visitors can book a tour on our Zoomobile vehicle or a drop-off to the top of the zoo site.
The peafowl have historically always roamed free at the zoo, and the majority of visitors love seeing them up close. The peafowl do tend to roam around areas where they know there will be some food, but it seems on the day of your visit they have been bolder than normal. I have informed our staff and asked them to kept an eye out to review the peafowl behaviour. If the peafowl do become a nuisance to our visitors, consideration will be given to moving them into an enclosure, which would be disappointing, but if necessary will be done.

My husband and i took my two brothers (12 & 13) & our 10 month old niece on saturday 31st July. We had a great day, however we were very disappointed with the zoo itself. It seems very run down and not very well maintained. There are very few animal, you were lucky to get 1 animal in its enclosure and if u did get one it was far away and you could hardly see it. Plenty of monkeys, felt like i was at a monkey park rather than a zoo tbh. The best part was the giraffes and elephants. Lots of penguins too. The tree top cafe was swarming with wasps so that was pretty unpleasant, we ended up packing up and going elsewhere. Any animals in behind glass windows were hard to see as glass was stinking and steamed up with condensation. Its a real shame and pity because this place has massive potential to really be a great zoo, especially considering it was nearly £40 for us all to go. The shop on the way out is shockingly bad though, prices are extortionate and there was very little stock. We made it a great day for what it was, but ill not be rushing back.

Belfast Zoo stocks a wide range of souvenirs to suit a range of budgets and carries out regular stock takes to ensure an adequate supply of stock. On some occasions we may experience high demand of a particular item due to unforeseen circumstances or delays with our suppliers due to Brexit. We apologise that stock levels were low on the day of your visit.
Unfortunately wasps are a recurring problem at this time of year, particularly around areas with food and bins, however we and our catering provider try our best to actively manage them with regular removal of nests, regular emptying of bins, use of closed-topped bins and using sprays.
In previous years we have used wasp traps however as we now have several colonies of black Irish honeybees in the zoo, we have reduced the number of these to key locations in the zoo to avoid adversely impact our bee population.

I'll concede upfront that on a summer day when all the animals are resident this would be a nice place to visit. However, on a cold winters day when you're playing spot the animal in a zoo the experience is very disappointing. If the zoo were to charge reduced prices in the winter and make people aware that there are a limited amount of animals on show at that time of year then that would be fair enough in my opinion.

One of the best zoos I've ever been too.
We went on a cold February Morning but we arrived at 10.30 but didn't leave til 3.30
I've also find this to be one of the cheapest zoos I've ever been too, only £13.50 for an adult I think that's a bargain considering how many animals are there and how much upkeep they all need
When we arrived in the morning we were advised of the one way system, easy enough to follow went through the reptile house and saw everything in there, then headed round to the zebras and giraffes etc when we saw the elephants we were curious as to why they were resting their heads on the walls like many reviews have previously stated they looked sad
Well if people took the time and actually went inside the elephant house the information stats how the zoo had rescued them both from horrid times in the circus and the wall resting was because they wanted to come inside and the head bobbing was a comfort thing from previous trauma.
We made our way round to the cafe it was a cold February Morning so understandable most animals were tucked inside in the warm, but once we came out the cafe we went back round certain areas again those animals we missed had come outside at that point as the sun was coming out- again previous reviews moaning they couldn't see animals just didn't want to take the time to go back on themselves
Two things that were the absolute highlight
We've never ever heard a lion roar that close in front of us, you could hear him throughout the park roaring but to actually be stood in front of him as he roared was absolutely brilliant and highlight of our trip
The second for us is we went back round to find out more information on the elephants as one of the keepers was bringing them in for food, she explained they have now got a sense of time and will often bang their head on the doors to come in as it's time for food, she let them in and the two come bounding in and started munching away, it was brilliant to see and again they were very close
Belfast zoo was a fantastic day out, yes there is lots of walking involved but there's plenty of rest stops and to only pay £13.50 to see over 400+ animals is a bargain in my opinion, plus if you have children they don't even pay til their 4
Ignore the reviews, the day out is well worth doing but take your time if you couldn't see a certain animal in the morning go back after and try again the zoo doesn't rush you
Thank you again
We made our way round to the cafe it was a cold February Morning so understandable most animals were tucked inside in the warm, but once we came out the cafe we went back round certain areas again those animals we missed had come outside at that point as the sun was coming out- again previous reviews moaning they couldn't see animals just didn't want to take the time to go back on themselves

l will not be back to Belfast Zoo!
First of all there is no mention that half the zoo attractions/animals are closed off to the public when booking online.
Secondly we are still being charged Full admission fee, to experience half a zoo!
If you want to see and experience a fantastic zoo goto Dublin Zoo. A lot more animals and you can actually see thru the glass unlike Belfast.

Hi there
We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your recent visit to the zoo.
When purchasing tickets online, everyone is required to tick that they have read our FAQ page. This page does advise that "Many indoor animal areas remain closed". We apologise if this was not clear to you.
You can read about this on our website here: http://www.belfastzoo.co.uk/plan-your-day/covid19.aspx
We also endeavour to make the animal habitats as natural as possible for the animals in the zoo. As such, there are certain areas in their habitats where they can go for privacy, resulting in them not always being outside where visitors can easily see them. Unfortunately, at the time of your visit, some of the animals may therefore have been out of view.
In regards to your comments about the windows, each morning the windows are cleaned by zoo staff. In addition to this we also have regular window cleaning by a contracted cleaning provider. However, in a 55 acre site it can be difficult to maintain this with animals and a large number of visitors on both sides of the glass. We are aware that some of the glass is degraded by age and we have an improvement / investment plan in place for the systematic and periodic replacement of these panels, as resources become available.
We hope that you will consider visiting us again in the future.

How long would a good trip to the zoo take?
I'm hoping to take a group of 50 children aged 8-11.

hello, we live in downpatrick, Ukrainian families with children. Children really want to visit your zoo. If we come as a group of several families, can you make a charity gift for us - a free visit for children, or at least a discount on tickets? We will be very grateful to you

There are lots of hotels in Belfast. You can find out more from Visit Belfast's website. There are also buses which travel from city centre to the zoo regularly.
