A lovely walk around the lake

A lovely day out. The house isn't really my thing but theres plenty around the lake to keep you occupied.

Never get tired of visiting these magnificent gardens and lakes. Lose yourself in the magic of Jane Austen. Used so many times in period tv and film dramas. Delightful any time of the year.

Beautiful gardens. Restaurant a little expensive however food is delicious. Ice cream parlour stocks the most fabulous lovingtons ice cream.

You can spend a few good hours exploring the full garden around the lake, it is stunning. The house for us was not the highlight of our visit (and it paled in comparison to the Longleat House!) although the NT guides were brilliant in showing us around.

Being winter, the gardens are not at their best but the footpaths give you the chance to visit other local historic sites. Unfortunately the house was being repaired due to damage caused by a water leak but the hall was still open with a nice warm fire in the hearth.

Although I visit here regularly I am always recharged by the visit. There is something different to see each time - I particularly enjoy parking some distance away and then walking in to the park from different directions. It is especially lovely when quiet, which is admitedly not that often.

These Stourhead Gardens are spectacular virtually all the year round, and superbly managed. We walk there most mornings all the year round, and never tire of the changing foliage colours and birdlife

This morning we had a fascinating "Behind Closed Doors" tour. Lasting about a hour we visited many room not normally open to visitors led by a very knowledgeable room guide. Very informative. After lunch we squeezed in a walk in the winter sunshine to the obelisk before descending to complete a circuit of the lake. A touch squelchy in places... More

Wonderful walks, gorgeous gardens and fantastic follies. A house to die for and surroundings that make you hope you were Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy is waiting in one of the little temples in the gardens. Live the history, forget the present and lose yourself for an afternoon. Love it.
