- Alan MWetherby, United Kingdom1,413 contributionsVery thought provokingVery friendly and helpful staff. Amazing presentation and still in very good condition with horrendous stories of life not so long ago. We had to keep reminding ourselves how recently these conditions existed. The museum is larger than our last visit with more areas open which gives an even better impression of how it operated. There is also information on other workhouses in Yorkshire. We had 2 hours in the museum and could have taken more time.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 October 2023
- Val WMerthyr Tydfil, United Kingdom1,223 contributionsForgotten Heritage Brought to Life. The site does an excellent job of interpreting an often forgotten part of our history. As well as giving insight into the harshness of the system, you also get a glimpse of the far better life led by the master and matron. The garden adds yet another dimension to the experience. The first time we ever saw the garden, it was in a very embryonic stage but we have watched it progress year by year (except during the pandemic) and it is a credit to the site.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 May 2024
- Georgette Aleja... F6 contributionsInteresting Thought Provoking HistoryI learnt so much of Victorian times in this very well kept museum. The museum is much larger than it appears on the outside, it is extremely well conserved and has a lot of information to learn about Workhouses in Great Britain, their origin, evolution, the Old and New Poor Laws, how they were managed, how people lived there and what happened to (at least this one) after the NHS and other welfare services infrastructure was established in the late 1940s. The museum has several attached buildings and even a garden that was used to both sell produce to ensure income as well as to have items for food preparation in-house.Many thanks for your review. I am glad you enjoyed your day with us and took so much away from your visit.Written 17 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 11 July 2024

This is a really special place that needs to be more widely known. The museum people have done a fantastic job of bringing to life the local part of the story that needs to be told. They have gone to great time and effort recreating the Victorian kitchen garden, complete with varieties of fruit and vegetables that would have been grown in that time. When you walk around the buildings, you can almost feel the atmosphere of times and people long gone and all credit to those who have kept, and still are keeping, this museum alive.

Interesting place to visit. The ladies who meet and greet, plus give information were lovely and knowledgeable about the workhouse.
The information on boards had not been dumbed down, nor was it too complex; a refreshing change from those museums that either patronise children, or make information dry and dusty for everyone.
Inexpensive considering the ticket lasts a year.
Well worth a visit, particularly as they are still developing areas of the building

An interesting view of the life in a workhouse. The first section had a lot of wall mounted information and pictures which were mostly interesting but a little overwhelming in detail. The second part of the visit in the master's house and living quarters was more animated and gave a better feel for the life in a workhouse. Somewhat harrowing.

We visited the museum this afternoon and it was fascinating - it is a part of history that is often overlooked, so to have had the opportunity to learn about it in such a well preserved setting was fantastic. What really made it special, though, were the wonderful volunteers running it. They were so knowledgeable and dedicated, and gave us so much time and information. Without people like them, these places and stories would be lost. All in all, a brilliant way to spend an hour. Kate and Alex.

We visited the three Ripon museums at half term and enjoyed all three sites and the special Whodunnit trail.
There was so much to see at all of the museums, but especially the Workhouse, where we spent a happy hour and a half with our two boys aged 8 and 10. All of the volunteers we met were fabulous, but special mention must go to the lady playing the Tramp Major who was very engaging. The displays and information was all well presented with lots of very visual elements (such as examples of food or clothing) which were great if you’re getting text weary. The special trail really caught the imagination of my two sons (although we never found the footprints in the garden!) and made the visit even more interesting as we learnt about the different roles of the workhouse suspects.
We also had a really good session with the lady judge at the courthouse summing up our evidence and discussing the pitfalls of the judicial system in days gone by - she was also excellent and really made the visit extra special. In fact, my 8 year old said that he’d liked the courthouse best of all!
Bravo Ripon museums: we’re also visiting Beamish and the National Railway Museum this week, but I think you did just as good a job: what was perhaps a little more scarce in terms of budget was made up for in spades with the quality of the person led interpretation and the clear passion and enthusiasm of your team. 10/10.

Despite it’s sobering past, the Workhouse museum has some beautiful grounds & buildings. Everything was well presented, very informative and gave a real insight into life in the 19th century workhouse, especially if you have ancestors who experienced the workhouse.
Bit of a heavy atmosphere in some places, if only the walls could talk! One room had a light that kept switching on/off as though a child was playing with the switch. Immediately stopped when I entered the room. Hoping this was a feature and not some paranormal experience 🤣 either way, we enjoyed it.
Highly recommend

Really fascinating museum which captured the imagination of our children aged 3-11. The staff and volunteers were extremely welcoming and knowledgeable and the displays and trails throughout the museum and its grounds were informative and thought provoking. We particularly enjoyed the cells where the ‘casual’ residents stayed and the art exhibited around the museum reflecting on the experiences of people living in the workhouse was very moving. The gardens are also beautiful and accessible for buggy/wheelchairs (though some areas are quite steep). All in all a great day out, would highly recommend a visit!

We visited on a Sunday and were surprised to find it so quiet for such a great attraction. We're told its the only workhouse in the UK still remaining in its original form. It was extremely interesting and thought provoking and one of the museum volunteers was full of knowledge and stories about it. We would thoroughly recommend it - for all ages.

This is a brilliant museum. We popped in and thought it might be an hour visit and spent over two. Staff are very knowledgeable and the dowloadable audio obtained using a QR code is so well done. Fascinating social history and great for all the family. Volunteers are in costume in some areas and helped to make the experience even better. Enjoyed it so much will be back with the whole family later in year. Thank you to staff and volunteers. ❤️😊

Had expectations that this would be a 20 min museum visit to fill a gap in a rainy day- we stayed 90 and could have stayed longer. The five children in our party (ages 8-14) loved learning about the workhouse and trying on the costumes(especially in the school room). Well worth a visit and a bargain price versus other attractions.
