About
Our elegant Georgian Courthouse remains virtually unchanged since it was built in 1830. Following closure of the Magistrates Court in 1998 it was opened as a museum a year later. In 2005 its interiors were redecorated in the original colour scheme used when the building opened at Michelmas 1830. The permanent display offers an illustrated history of the use of the Courthouse, suitable for all ages.

Small museum

This museum is tiny, it’s interesting although there is not a lot to see or much to read regarding the history. It took us about 20 minutes to look around and that was with also listening to the information available through my phone.

Much smaller than the other two museums

This one only takes about 30 to 45 minutes to look around, only a short walk from the Prison/Police Museum, and almost next door to Ripon Cathedral. Really only the old courtroom (court 1) the slightly more modern court 2 has been converted into offices.

Informative and good value

Purchased the 3 ticket and enjoyed all 3 museums immensely. The workhouse is the best and probably best value of the three (based on time spent) however I'm glad we experienced all to get a flavour of crime and punishment in days gone by.

This was the last visit using our three ticket museum.you only need less than your to see this.it was very informative. It was an eye opener about the punishment people got for petty crime.across the road was a church. Rippon was a nice village.well worth the visit.

Small but interesting!

This is part of the three Ripon “law and order” museums. You can buy individual tickets but it is far better value to buy a ticket for all three and this covers you for repeat admissions for year.
The Courthouse is the smallest of the three sites but they do their best to maximise the interpretation of the space they have.

It is worth watching the videos related to actual cases as they provide a good context for what happened there.

It is not really fully accessible for wheelchairs and could be difficult for those with mobility issues – over the years we have seen those with no issues trip on some of the steps.

Small museum

We visited here for the first time today as we had called into the area to visit the sister museums and opted to pay for the annual family ticket to see all 3 for £31.
This was the smallest of the three museums and we didn’t spend much time here.
This could be made better as could all the others sister museums by adding a few more hands on/interactive tasks in the different rooms.
I’m glad we had paid for the annual ticket to visit all 3 as if we paid just for this I would of been disappointed.
We have visited all 3 and would say purchase the ticket to view all 3.
This museum does not open until 1pm so factor that into your visit.

Would have thought the museums would have been together - too expensive to go in both as a pensioner

Pointless.

Over-priced, little to see, no staff or volunteers to engage and explain. We had the misfortune to listen to a discordant, disjointed sound display that added nothing to the visitor experience. We took our time viewing what little there was to view and still got out in 30 minutes! This is one of a trio of museums in Ripon. Save time and money by avoiding this and the Prison & Police Museum but do go to the Workhouse Museum

Does what it says on the tin

I purchased the three museum ticket and sadly this is the worst of the lot. It is quite a short tour but it does give you a good overview of the court system. It only consists of three rooms and if I had only purchased tickets for this site I would have felt very let down but as part of the three museum ticket it’s quite good.
