We enjoyed exploring James Fort. We walked to the tunnel, and all around the fort, as well as the trails in the field which led us to a little beach. A nice place to 'get away' from the crowds and noise and enjoy the views of the harbour!

It takes a bit of walking to get to James Fort, as is it not accessible by car, which is just one of the many good things about it. We were the ONLY people there when we went, so had the whole area to ourselves. The fort is basically a very well preserved ruin, with no entry allowed. Nice photo... More

Interesting 5 pointed fort on 12 acres. They have done a nice job of restoration. Also they have made it kid friendly by having 5 fairy doors that they must locate.

Took a bus from Cork Business park to Kinsale, 30 mins trip, return ticket cost about 10 Euros, about 5 kms from the bus station. Good walk along the water to reach the fort, recommend carrying rain jacket. After long walk, it was disappointment that you cannot enter the fort, but has spectacular views, so not a must see, but... More

It's smaller and not spectacular but worth seeing, and a good view of Charles Fort across the bay. Glad we went.

It's a lovely walk from the town out to James Fort with great views of the town and across to Summercove and Charles Fort. Get the Billy McVitie "Ferry" back into the harbour to finish off a lovely morning/afternoon.

Basically this is a ruined fort, bit of a steep climb to get to it,not accessible by car, fort is just what you would expect from a ruin, walk up to Fort from where we parked our car takes abt half an hour, stunning views though!!

This is definately one of the best historical sites I have seen in Ireland, reminds us all of how it really was back in the day protecting our land, and its so great that it has been preserved as an historical site, a must see when in Kinsale

Across the bay from Charles Fort this site is free access, unattended and has no facilities (earlier reviewers appear to get the two forts mixed up!). However it is still a worthwhile place to visit if you like old ruins and has excellent views.
