Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stunning fort! The highlight however is the stunning, charismatic Jibbles, a buxom sheep who is as friendly as a wee dog, who guards the front door. Jibbles likes to be hand fed grass, head scratches, and will lift a fire leg to paw at you if you aren’t paying enough attention. She is a sweet angel and potentially a faery sheep.

A very interesting (but restored) stone fort built over a thousand years ago. A great place to visit for its historical value in seeing how defenses in the 7th century were built, and how they differed significantly from the many castles that abounded later in history.
It is also a place where you can climb all over and really achieve a sense of how defensive and protective they were.
It also affords visitors wonderful views including two nearby sights that can no longer be visited. These being Ballycarbery Castle and the Leacanabuaile Ring Fort.
Beware of a man who frequents the entrance holding baby lamb (or goat), offering you an opportunity to hold it while he takes a photo of you (with your camera). Regrettably, few can resist such an experience, and then find him asking them for a “donation” (of a few euro’s).

Such an amazing feature and beautifully restored ancient stone fort. Huge in scale and so impressive to see up close.
Even more amazing is how quiet it always is. This is such a hidden treasure and have never seen many people here at all.

Interesting outdoor ruins form a fort. I came out here in the evening after dinner while it was still daylight. There will be a small parking lot on the side of the road and you will see a dirt walking path - that might be the only markings you see. Great views of the countryside and you can walk all around and inside the ruins. Should be a 10-15min walk to get over there from the parking lot.

This ring fort made for an interesting stop. There is some parking available and it’s a short walk to both ring forts. There is not much information at the sight, just a small plaque. Cahergal has really great walls and Leacanabuaile shows better how the set up was inside.

Just a ten minute detour off the ring of Kerry drive and well worth a quick stop. The fort was much bigger than I expected and well preserved. You can climb up the walls to get good views of the local area and admire the dry stone walls. Free car park about a ten minute walk away.

Purely by accident, we happened on this Fort - it was too late to finish the Ring of Kerry by the time we reached Cahersiveen, so we had a look on the map for interesting sites in the area. This was marked on an OSI map, just West of Cahersiveen, via a side-road off Main Street and past the famous Cahersiveen Barracks.
The only way to describe it is fabulous. Part of the original is still there but it has been reconstructed. The whole design is ingenious - the inner sanctum where a fire could be lit and people could stay warm, the outer sanctum with the thick walls and steps, the outer wall higher in the direction of the prevailing winds.
Definately worth a visit.

Cross over the bridge in Cahersiveen and follow signs. Both stone forts worth seeing. Bigger than you think when you are inside or beside them!

If you are doing the Ring of Kerry, make sure you stop off at Cahersiveen, visit Ballycarberry Castle and the 2 ancient ring forts beside it.
They are a little walk up a small, gentle hill and they are free access. i'm sure adults and kids alike will love scarmbling over and up the walls and this fort is the more impressive of the 2. If its a nice day, you could spend and hour or two here. Imagine what it would have been like 1000 years ago when it was built. Majestic and amazing!

Fantastic example of a stone fort. Great place to visit with children, several levels to climb. Interesting.
