Historical marvel

You have an opportunity to see and touch an ancient altar. Amazing to be able to experience this marvel just off the road

No more to add! Go soon, because it is hard to believe these stones will stand much longer. Oh and watch your footing, it's slippery under foot.

This ancient Alter Wedge Tomb is very easily accessible from the road ,safe parking while you take in the views as well as savouring the ancient history of the location. Walk to the edge of the land to the sea and take in the sea air ,when the tide is in or out it offers great photo opportunities

there is very limited parking, so since your driving on the left side of the road, youll miss the turn if not paying attention

This wedge tomb is situated in a gorgeous landscape. There is a car park just off the road and it is just a few steps to the tomb. For those who have driven the Dingle Peninsula, the scenery at Altar is similarly gorgeous.

This ancient Alter Wedge Tomb and Mass Rock dates back to at least 2000 BC if not to the Iron Age.It is easily accessible from the main road 4 miles west of Schull but could be missed depending on what direction you approach .and offers wonderful views of Toormore Bay. There is no evidence that sacrifice was offered however in... More

So there you are, driving from Schull toward Mizen Head, and you see a little vista pull-off at the side of the road. "Altar? What altar?" you think to yourself. You get out of the car, stretch, and take in the view. Lovely. Then you turn a bit, and there you have it. A 5,000 year old tomb , tucked... More

The altar is relatively easy to find on R592 between Goleen and Schull. Look for signposts. The altar itself is a very interesting construction having survived centuries. There is a little path around the place with stunnng views of hills and beaches. If you are in this region (perhaps visiting Mizen Head) spare a moment and visit the altar.
