    The Whithorn Roundhouse and museum
Fantastic Iron Age site and Museum so recommended for an step back in history We were very luck to be shown around the Iron Age roundhouse by one of people who reconstructed the roundhouse Tom. He was a wonderful guide with a wealth of knowledge. He made our visit more the special. The Museum and exhibition has a vast collection of information about the surrounding county and beautifully present. Would so recommend a visit and ask for Tom Thank you

    Fascinating Insight
Viewing any exhibition through the expertise of a guide always brings history to life and Tom did this brilliantly. He explained the history of the roundhouse with humorous touches which was highly engaging. It was fascinating to hear about how it was constructed and why. Afterwards, he took us around the gallery and explained the carvings and possible explanations for the designs. A brilliant experience from a fellow Nottinhamian.

Go talk to Debbie and better appreciate this hsitory!!
Debbie, the Museum, is the reason to go learn about this intriuging history. She is fun, engaging and immensely knowledgeable of her Scottish history as a whole!! Don't bother at the visitor center once you get the ticket (they are very unfriendly and ill mannered)

A brilliant tour guide and a fabulous roundhouse!
Visited this week, really great trip! Ruaridh was a fantastic guide. Really knowledge and clearly passionate. It was incredible to learn about how people might have lived in and around roundhouses. The roundhouse itself is excellent and the exhibitions are fab too!

Really interesting guided tour of the reconstructed Iron Age roundhouse which took about 45 minutes, then there are two separate museums to look around.

In this small town/Burgh in Dumfries and Galloway, you will find this delightful history/archaeology experience.
Visit the museum, sign up for the tour of the excavation site and the round house, and you may see apprentices using traditional tools to turn, shape and construct in timber.
Thank you Ruairidh for your knowledgeable, enthusiastic and professional tour of the precinct and the roundhouse.
The cafe and museum are run by friendly and welcoming staff and the food is cheap, freshly made and delicious. Whithorn is lucky to have this gem.

A lovely welcome, a trip into Iron Age History and a Great Tour Guide - Ruaridh, who was very knowledgable. The the lunch was yummy, if a bit expensive for a ham sandwich. The local Residents spoke to us which made us feel welcome.
The museum has findings from recent digs in the local area.

The tour of the Roundhouse was amazing, it bought back very distant memories of RJ Unsteads, history books in Primary School.

After the Tour we popped in to see the stone collection and a quick look at the Priory, sadly enclosed in steel fencing.

And what is more amazing I can go back time and time again, if Iam in the neighbourhood again.

Great visitor centre but in particular don’t miss the excellent Roundhouse tour - Ruaridh’s brilliant & thoroughly expert explanation of how it’s based on local & wider archaeology to show life here almost 2500 years ago - fascinating!

One of the best visitor centres I have ever visited. We did the 11.30 tour on monday 3rd October and our guide was really interesting, had lots of information and was so professional, ten out of ten. We found the whole experience fascinating, it was a highlight of our holiday. The cafe sells lovely food, especially the soup it was delicious! Highly recommend a visit, we stayed two and a half hours and loved it!

Make sure you have plenty of time - not so much because you can but because you will want to and you will need to! I was amazed at how many exhibits, how much detail and how well presented it all was in the museum through the back of the teashop, just off the main street. And then I went round to the Historic Environment Scotland museum and ... my word! Not only some amazing Christian stone carvings, not only a well designed presentation, but Debbie the manager has such knowledge, such delight in the history and speaks so well. She pointed out intricate details, she made it personal and I had to tear myself away. Happily, a ticket lasts for a year and allows for return trips. The whole area has so much to offer, but this one museum and Debbie's skill in narrating the history is worth a trip in its own right. PLEASE go - you won't be disappointed (and you'll spend longer than you think you might!).
