Everybody goes to a Game Reserve in the hope to see everything in one day. What a lot of us forget is to look at everything, even the smaller things too. The birds, reptiles, variety of grasses, trees, soil, rocks, plants, small and large animals, droppings, spoor, etc. you stand amassed ... you never knew there is so many things... More

Interesting place to visit, it's worth to go on Game Drive either at 6 a.m. or for night game drive. So, chance to see wild animals is higher in this case (we were lucky to see 3 lion cubs of 2 year age having their "breakfast"). During the daytime animals are deeper in the bushes due to high temperature and... More

Me, my wife and one of my sons went here today. We arrived early (6:15 am), feeling it would be better before the day got too hot. We spent around 9 hours driving round and we feel we did well. We saw buffalo, giraffes, zebras, ostrich, warthogs, gnu's and pleanty of gazelles and that sort of thing. We were very... More

We went on a game drive organised by the Mongena game Lodge. We were surprised how much game we saw. We had 3 rhino and 1 elephant sightings. A beautiful male kudu and many zebras, wildebeest, red hartebeest, impala, warthogs and nyalas. As it is so close to Pretoria / Johannesburg, it is a conenient weekend outing.

This is a good outing to run away to from the busy city life. Be prepared to pay for it. The animals are however few and far apart. Do not expect to see the big 5 in one day's drive. Picnic areas are well kept but very little shade. Rietvlei is by far the better option.

Thank you for your feedback. Everything you mentioned is relevant, it is almost impossible to cover the whole SDR (never mind the whole reserve) in one day. The size difference between Rietvlei and the Dinokeng Game Reserve is there. We are 18500 ha, where Rietvlei is much smaller, so the opportunity to see game more infrequent is there. In the... More

We spent a day for self drive game viewing in early December. It was a 1 hr drive to reach the reserve, which provided a real treat. We spotted numerous antelope including red hartebeest and even a few eland. Zebras and wildebeest were plentiful, and we were lucky enough to see giraffe and rhino. A lioness was spotted whilst we... The are plenty of wild live that can be seen self-drives route. The maps that is provided do not have all the detail but according the person at the gate that helped us they are busy with a new map design. It is a Big 5 wild live area although we only seen the rhino’s from the big 5 group.... More

What an amazing game reserve, didn't struggle to come across the wild . Stayed at Maroela TreeTop Lodge, I wouldn't mind going back there .

DInokenf is a nice place beause of its landscapes varying greatly. However, the fauna is not very abundant. We spent the night thre and could not see any of the big fives. Maybe unlucky but we drove on and early morning without seeing them. We did see still zebra and giraffes and gnous and waterbucks and impalas and kudus, etc. Still... More
