(with waterhole)Very private, other stands are 10metres plus apart. Beautiful clean, spacious bathrooms. Braais and grid get washed....I could not find fault. This is Gautengs best kept secret. It's just over an hour out of jozi and you are in a big 5 reserve. There is a lot of accommodation to choose from. From camping to luxury boutique hotels. There is something to match all budgets. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

We decided to take a trip round the game park after leaving the hotel, it is a fairly new game reserve only 5 years old so they are still building up the stocks of animals. They do say they have the big 5 although we didn't see many of them. Being summer the gras was rather tall and being in... More

Its only a half an hour drive from Pretoria and 300 m to the entrance from the N 1 " Hammanskraal off ramp" The friendly people at the gate assist you with a lovely map and information and permit for a self drive through the park. We went for tea at " Tshikwalo lodge " The atmosphere was very special... More

Close to Pretoria well worth a day trip if early enough. The self-drive routes are okey but the map that they supply at the gate is confusing and not well marked. But lots of animals to see. Had lots of rain so the grass was high but still beautiful.

Everybody goes to a Game Reserve in the hope to see everything in one day. What a lot of us forget is to look at everything, even the smaller things too. The birds, reptiles, variety of grasses, trees, soil, rocks, plants, small and large animals, droppings, spoor, etc. you stand amassed ... you never knew there is so many things... More

Interesting place to visit, it's worth to go on Game Drive either at 6 a.m. or for night game drive. So, chance to see wild animals is higher in this case (we were lucky to see 3 lion cubs of 2 year age having their "breakfast"). During the daytime animals are deeper in the bushes due to high temperature and... More

Me, my wife and one of my sons went here today. We arrived early (6:15 am), feeling it would be better before the day got too hot. We spent around 9 hours driving round and we feel we did well. We saw buffalo, giraffes, zebras, ostrich, warthogs, gnu's and pleanty of gazelles and that sort of thing. We were very... More

We went on a game drive organised by the Mongena game Lodge. We were surprised how much game we saw. We had 3 rhino and 1 elephant sightings. A beautiful male kudu and many zebras, wildebeest, red hartebeest, impala, warthogs and nyalas. As it is so close to Pretoria / Johannesburg, it is a conenient weekend outing.

This is a good outing to run away to from the busy city life. Be prepared to pay for it. The animals are however few and far apart. Do not expect to see the big 5 in one day's drive. Picnic areas are well kept but very little shade. Rietvlei is by far the better option.

Thank you for your feedback. Everything you mentioned is relevant, it is almost impossible to cover the whole SDR (never mind the whole reserve) in one day. The size difference between Rietvlei and the Dinokeng Game Reserve is there. We are 18500 ha, where Rietvlei is much smaller, so the opportunity to see game more infrequent is there. In the... More
