Terrific setting, though the nicest views of the Eremo are probably from the water (I am not even sure that is possible without a private boat; we drove there). Nice frescoes but not very many, this is quite a small place. Overall, adding in the noontime closure, this was a detour of about 3 hours on our way from Cannobio... More

Old monastery across the lake from Stresa. Can be reached by boat from early spring to beginning of October, then by car. A long staircase gets you to the church, or a 1€/person elevator for the less athletic.

This is best seen as part of Lake Tour via boat. It is utterly amazing the way this monastery just seems to be an integral part of the cliff itself. It was founded in the 12th century and along with Borromeo Islands are must sees if you visit this area. The site consists of 3 buildings, the southern convent, the... More

The architecture and engineering are feats of human and supernatural strength. The views of the lake are stunning, and the Spirit is palpable.

Go first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds, this intimate spiritual place is best viewed in relative solitude. A 15 minute ferry ride across Lake Maggiore from Stresa, the Hermitage clings to the side of a cliff, well above the water. There is also access by an elevator down through the rock from a car park above on... More

It's perfect, calm and relaxing spot by the lake. It also wasn't crowded with tourists, the view is splendid. The spot has also been made accessible for everyone via elevator, but if you feel brave you may take the stairs!

A peaceful and calm monastery anchored into the cliff. It's very small and if you are not very interested in religious tourism this might be a bit boring, or only worth a short stop. However be careful about the ferry schedule as you might have to stay there an hour or more, with little to do.

We visited Santa Caterina on a very hot day but had a lovely lunch on the property before taking all the steps down to the Church and beautiful Vistas. The church was lovely with stained glass and soothing chorals piped thru. This is free except 1euro to take elevator back up, too hot for hundreds of steps.

We came here in the morning and had to wait 3 hours before the ferry came. Upstairs is a nice bar/resto but I would recommend going if you can go back within the hour

A beautiful serene and tranquil place to visit. The church has amazing decoration and is such a peaceful and moving place. The views across the lake are wonderful. Well worth a visit on the boat from Stresa. Although there are signs to say no shorts and arms to be covered, this does not seem to be enforced. There is a... More
