Nunney Castle - feast for the photographer
Beautiful castle with lots of character. Feast for the eyes and the keen photographer. Being able to walk within the walls gave a sense of space and volume. Nunney Castle is the centre of a beautiful village. Free to enjoy by young and old.

    Small, but perfect.
Lovely castle to visit, set in a small ground and surrounded by moat (that still has water in it). There are three floors, which can still be seen as can the fireplaces and windows. Well worth the visit (it's also free!)

The village of Nunney with the historical castle owned by our ancestors; Prather/Prater
I came from Indianapolis Indiana to see the famous castle from our family history. Took the bus from Bath to Frome and then over to Nunney. I was enthralled by the beauty of the town and thought it was perhaps the most beautiful village I had ever experienced. The townspeople were very receptive and I enjoyed the pub, the church, and the laid-back atmosphere. I even had a couple of invites to relocate there when I "retire". Meeting Kim and Ron Warwick of the Nunney History Society was an absolute privilege. Their place backs up to the stately castle. The castle is in great shape to be ruins and is cared for nicely. I was very proud to tell people my name and how it would have been in our heritage several centuries ago.

    Fun stop along the way
This was a fun and easy stop on the way from our AirB&B to Glastonbury. The car park is about 5 minutes’ walk uphill, but you can drop off anyone with limited mobility right next to the castle and go park the car. The path and castle interior are fairly accessible for a cane or walking sticks. There are no stairs and no way to access anything in the castle other than the ground level. My kids’ favorite part of the visit was seeing the families of ducks. A number of mother ducks and their ducklings were resting by the moat water, and they did not mind being photographed from fairly close. The castle is great for pictures. Note that it’s an open air ruin with no shelter, so plan accordingly if it’s raining.

Not much, but quite a lot.
There's not much here to savour, of course. But it is definitely worth a brief detour for a 10 minute, or so, trot around the ruinations and to gaze at what remains in dilapidation, in order to see and feel history as it happened long ago. It fits in snugly and enhances with its history the wonderous surrounds of Nunney.

Lovely setting in a very picturesque village. You can imagine how compact the castle was in its heyday. Only ruins now but set inside a lovely moat and you can walk all round the ruins. No entrance fee and we found car parking just over the bridge up a slight hill (also free).

There is a free good size car park 200 metres up the hill from the castle which means you do not have to disturb residents by parking nearby to visit the castle. If, as a child, you drew a castle this would be it. A small round castle with a moat. Perfect. And free to enter. While it is in the centre of the village there are no buildings immediately near spoiling the setting. It is small and will not take long to stroll around and appreciate the building, but it is also in a pretty village and is well worth a short stop with a pub and a coffee shop if you wish to stay longer.

Dropped in for a meal at the fab nearly cafe - and love old buildings - this certainly does not disappoint. Loved being able to see the structure of the building and how it was built and lived in - real history on your doorstep. Worth making the detour to find.

Another reviewer described the structure as a ‘fairy tale’ castle which is a great description of this small moated castle.
Situated in the lovely village of Nunney, there is not a lots to see given it is a ruin but it’s free to explore. It is easy to stand inside the castle, look upwards at the outline of the castle floors above, and image the life of those who lived and worked there hundreds of years ago!
We will be back in the summer to see it in the sunshine (there will be a summer won’t there!?)
PS Don’t miss a cuppa in the lovely ‘Moat and Turret’ café very near the castle.

We were delighted to come across Nunney castle, and despite it sounding like a location in a Blackadder episode we had a very enjoyable visit.

Nunney is a very pretty village, and whilst the castle is a small ruin, the surrounding grounds are well maintained. There is a wooden bridge crossing the moat so you can closely inspect the ruins, and there are two information boards providing a brief history of the castle. There is no charge to visit the castle and there is a free carpark that can house around 25 cars just a short walk up the hill.

There are a couple of benches by the stream so we were able to sit there with our takeaway coffees from The Moat and Turret café, whilst others happily sat on the grass bank by the moat. The local ducks were content to sleep peacefully whilst the visitors wandering around them.

Recommended for a visit of around an hour.

Although pouring down with rain, we visited in february and was surprised at how intact the castle was. Lovely to walk around the moat and then further into the village.
Will return in the warmer months as it seemed perfect for a picnic!

Picturesque old castle in an equally picturesque village. The castle is free to access, but small so don't expect something which will take up your whole day. Being located in a quiet villlage on the Mendips, your visit should be a tranquil one. However, be wary of the moat especially if you have children with you. The weed coverage in the moat can be deceptive, and only recently a young boy ran on to what he thought was grass and would have drowned if his father hadn't dived in to the moat to resue him. Keep your children close and you should have no problem. The village itself has a duck pond, interesting church and a traditional pub in the centre. There is also a small shop by the bridge.

This was a big disappointment. Although the castle and village look nice and worth a stop , there is absolutely no place to park a motorhome or higher vehicle (the castle car park has a very low height barrier). As a result, we had to turn around and head off elsewhere. It would have been nice of English Heritage to have pre-warned us of car park height limits on their website. So near and yet so far....
