I had a 1:1 Pembrokeshire photography workshop with Drew Buckey, which was a birthday present from my mum and sister. To give a bit of background - I am an amateur photographer and a beginner really, I’ve had a real camera for about 2 years and haven’t received much in the way of tuition before. Very much been trying to learn myself and watching YouTube videos etc.
Drew is really friendly and easy to talk to, he’ll answer any questions you’ve got regarding photography and has loads of useful advice. Ask whatever you need, he’ll help.
Having a workshop with Drew was something I’d definitely recommend to other photographers and if you’re like me and relatively inexperienced a workshop with Drew is worth every penny. I feel like the way I look at composition has changed and I have a greater understanding of things I’d already read about or watched online, but understand much better. Also how to use certain things better!
The main thing I got out of this workshop was improving my composition. It’s so important to get this right and I know I’ve made lots of mistakes along the way. Sometimes I’d get frustrated because I couldn’t see why my compositions didn’t work. Thanks to what I learnt from Drew I could immediately see what was going wrong and how to create stronger images. Of course the next part is practice, you can’t expect to be better overnight. But the knowledge I’ve learnt from Drew will really help me in the future. I’m already looking at things differently.
There was a setting I had switched on I didn’t know anything about, nor did I know I didn’t need it. This was also useful to learn as it’s saved me a lot of time with future shots!
I’ve also learnt more about light and how to use light in my photos, also things to avoid shooting depending on the light angle.
Perhaps one of the best things was getting to try some Lee Filters, Drew is an ambassador for the company. Wow is all I can say..! Forget the screw on’s you can buy from Amazon, you’re wasting your money! The Lee filters are expensive, but getting to try some really opened my eyes to what is possible with them and they allow you to be even more creative. The following day I went out to practice and was instantly disappointed without the filters, they really are a must have. Drew gave me some discount codes which was really kind and will be a big help for me buying some.
We had differing weather throughout the day, sunny skies to start at West Angle beach, followed by rain and hail at Martin’s Haven which forced us to break for a bit. Then we were treated to the most epic and moody sunset at Marloes. The soaking we endured was worth it!
Overall I had a fantastic day, learnt a lot that will really help me develop as a photographer, got to try a full range of very expensive filters enabling me to see what is possible with them and came away with some photos I feel very proud of.

I had to wait a fair while (over two years) for my trip due to the pandemic, but Drew was extremely accommodating and honoured my booking each year keeping me up to date with developments and permissions!
The trip was well worth the wait. I felt very well looked after the entire trip and was given excellent advice throughout. Drew is exceptionally knowledgeable, not just about the technical photography side, but also the species and the island itself. I definitely had much more success than I would have on my own and his tips and advice will improve my photography moving forward to which makes it even better value.
A fabulous day with an exceptional guide - will definitely be back - I fancy a residential and a crack at a few sunset shots!

I spent one and a half days with this super gentleman, Drew is so easy to get on with and within an hour it was like I had known him for years. His intimate knowledge of the area was first class and he chose locations that were beautiful and varied which allowed me to really challenge my photography skills. The pace and detail of his instruction was perfect from a composition and technical standpoint. I have been on a number of workshops which has really structured my photography but what Drew showed me was something new, his agility and freedom around the camera and the dials was so refreshing and fun, I now feel so much more confident in letting loose and exploring what I can do with my camera and cant wait to put it into practice. We had some really challenging conditions but at all times my safety and wellbeing was obviously at the front of Drews mind and he still found tons of great photographic opportunities. This really was great value for money and I had such a great time I have booked my next session already - Drew you are a superstar !

Drew is an excellent: knowledgable about the wildlife on Skomer and especially the puffins, of course. He is laid back in his approach, offering sound advice whenever needed without being intrusive. This makes his workshops useful and fun for photographers of all levels of ability. Highly recommended.

Drew is extremely knowledgeable and easy going, he had no issues with the amount of silly questions I asked especially being a below average amateur photographer. We set out a game plan prior to meeting and on the day visited a few locations working through different techniques, settings on the camera, things to look out for and what makes a good photograph. I really enjoyed the day and learned so much. I recommend anyone at any level spending time and learning from his vast knowledge

Skomer Island photography workshop with Drew. Well worth the money, Skomer Island is beautiful and home to many species of bird life particularly the Puffins which were my main interest. Drew not only has an intimate knowledge of the wildlife on Skomer but he is prepared to share his photographic knowledge as well to ensure you take good pictures, answering and explaining any questions you have, quite simply a nice bloke.

Excellent day meeting great people and learning new skills. Drew made the difficult seem easy and after a while it did start to click, photographing Puffins in flight is not easy…they’re like little bullets and need to be to out wit the waiting gulls. Drew was patient and encouraging, as he was with all of the course members…a great guy who is fun to be with and very knowledgeable about nature and photography. There was a wide range of photographic experience and equipment on the course, all of which Drew handled with ease. Would definitely recommend Drew to anyone needing add a little extra to their skills.

To be fair the puffins stole the show but that is what we'd hoped for....our hopes and expectations were completely over exceeded.
Puffins aside...Drew made everything more than easy and enjoyable before and during our trip. We were a group with very different abilities and knowledge. He looked after us all expertly, gently guiding us where needed (in my case most of the way). At all times he made it very easy to ask any kind of question, always had time to steer you in the right direction but never made you feel stupid and wasn't over imposing giving us all space and time where needed.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him or to spend another day with him.

I’ve been longing for sometime to undertake a photography workshop to gain practical knowledge and confidence in using my DSLR again after a long absence due to family commitments! This is perfect for the novice upwards - Drew ensures each person has the correct settings on their camera to capture beautiful photos of Puffins and other wildlife at the start of the day. It was a perfect day with beautiful weather, stunning views and plenty of Puffins! The group I was in were all lovely.
Drew is very patient, extremely knowledgeable and ensures that the whole experience is stress free as everything is taken care off. I am thrilled with the images I have taken. I highly recommended this experience and look forward to attending future workshops.

I had a great day of photography on Skomer led by Drew. He was incredibly knowledgeable about all the species and photography spots across the island, and was great at giving tailored experience for each member of the group who all had different cameras and ability levels. Would highly recommend Drew’s workshop for fantastic wildlife knowledge, good company and epic puffin in flight shots!
