The Swan Valley is about half an hour from Perth, capital city of Western Australia. The Swan Valley is a warm-climate area, best known for its rich, full-bodied wine. Most of the vineyards are well established and produce appealing wine. Other things to taste include craft beer and chocolate. It's worth taking a tour, you don't need too many tastings of strong Swan Valley wine to be over the limit

The Swan Valley is some distance from :Perth, but it is close enough for a day trip,. The Swan Valley is best known for its wine, which made its reputation. It's also famous for its luscious table grapes. The Swan Valley has lots more produce, including the sweet watermelons, which are grown between the vines. The Swan Valley is one of the most significant wine-making regions in Australia.

My wife and I have just returned from a holiday in Western Australia, including a week in the Swan Valley. This area is too easily missed, driving from Perth up the Great Northern Highway, with destinations like Shark Bay, Ningaloo Reef, and Nambung National Park on all the tourist maps. Less than half an hour North of Perth, the Swan Valley is well worth a couple of nights to see the sights, and stock up on fresh seasonal produce from the roadside stalls. Boutique wineries produce unusual wines such as liqueur shiraz, others have smart restaurants attached. An unusual way to tour is on the horse drawn Wagon Trail which means you don't have to drive. One winery we stopped at (Edgecombe Brothers) served a tasty ice cream topped with muscatel, one to remember! We intend visiting Western Australia again, and Swan Valley will certainly be on the itinery.

One of the few downsides of touring in Australia is the bewildering distance between the points you want to visit, like Africa, everything is far away. Just commuting between Sydney and Perth is a haul equal to London to Moscow. Perth is the world's most isolated capital city.
That makes genuine day trip experiences so much more appreciated, the Swan valley is one of these. It is less than an hour's drive from the Perth CBD, the train from Perth to Guildford, the valley's "capital" is less than 45 minutes and costs maybe two dollars. Once there you are in another world.
Planning ordinances protect the Valley from close urban settlement and provide a genuine rural atmosphere within minutes of the city. The vineyards you see there are working commercial farms, but it isn't just vineyards. The Valley has chocolate factories, multiple micro-breweries, wine cellars (of course), restaurants with small menus but great food (strangely few are open at night), and some amazing views from the surrounding hills.
You can see it any way you want, hire a car-remembering we drive on the left hand side of the road, take an organized tour, ride a bike, hire a kayak - there are no powerboats in the upper Swan and you can glide up-river for hours on end in total peace, just walk it if you are fit. A hire car or a motorbike are probably the best bets unless you plan to get serious in the cellars and breweries.
Sportsmen and women are not forgotten either. Perth has some of the best and the cheapest golf courses in the world and the Vines course in the Valley is amongst the best of those, also a great hotel. But most of all the Valley is famous for equestrian sports, the State Equestrian Center in Brigadoon is amazing and the Valley is home to just about every kind of horse you can imagine.
Want to cuddle a kangaroo or a koala? Visit Whiteman Park (it's named after its benefactor, Lou Whiteman in case you are wary of the title) it is one of the few places where you are actually encouraged to touch the animals. Whiteman Park also has amazing collections of rare cars and farm machinery from the last century and a bit beyond.
If you want to see it all it will take more than a day, but in one day you will have a great time and still be back in your hotel by nightfall.

We booked our day trip with the Swan Valley Shuttle Bus Tour company through the Swan Valley Visitor Centre. Both the Centre and the Tour Operator provided excellent service. The wineries (which also included a rum distillery) were very welcoming and generous with their tastings.
One word of caution however - be very careful about buying any wine from the Italian owner of Ambrook Wines. We were dammed BIG time. We tasted some interesting wines but were not particularly interested in buying any of them as they didn't excel compared to the other wineries. However the owner of the vineyard basically begged us to buy some wine as he was not making many sales, so we did. We bought two bottles of the Rosso D'Amore 2012.
When we arrived home in Sydney we opened the first bottle only to find it was corked (the cork basically slid out without any effort which is NEVER a good sign). Then we noticed the bubbles ...
This type of thing happens from time to time, so we were disappointed but not too bothered as we had a second bottle to consume. We opened the second bottle and same thing happened with the cork. BUT get this - the bottle was full of WATER. Can you believe it?
We can't help but believe this place is purposely scamming innocent wine consumers which the owner feels are unlikely to complain or protest. If you don't believe me, then I suggest you try for yourself.....

Here you can get great varieties.
First stop is McNut for Macadamia. Remember to pick up the tourist guide at the airport and cut out the discount coupon before you come here. See nuts plant, how the nuts are collected and process. Try your hand at cracking the nuts.
Next we visited the Bee Farm for Jarrah Honey. Jarrah is one of the highest honey grade. Get the original here. Great as gift and self consumptions
Chocolate factory is another favorite stop. Free chocolate tasting and also try their ice cream. You can get lunch here too!
Winery provide free tasting with no obligation. Pick up a few bottle that suites you.

So me and a friend had to kill a Sunday, so we decided to head Swan Valley with no knowledge about the place except for the wineries, we went and kept on hoping various places until we were tipsy. The place is nice to, people do share the uniqueness of their produce.

Begin by stopping for coffee and quirky shopping in the historic town of Guilford which was once the capital city of WA.
Drive on up West Swan Road stopping at whim to taste the wine of the many wineries that brew in the area.
Where the West Swan Road meets Copley Road turn right and proceed back along the Great Northern Highway.
If it is about lunch time stop off for a lunch at Stewarts restaurant. We had the daily special of crumbed pork chop on a bed of mashed potato and olives with a garden salad, plus a glass of the house wine for $25 each. Great value and delicious.
Stop off at the Olive Farm, perhaps the Nougat Factory or the House of Honey, be amazed by Thomas Maurer's Illusionary Art and finish with a pint at the Rose and Crown.
A great day out.

Only 25 minutes from Perth city centre, swan valley is the oldest wine growing region of Western Australia. You will find age a blend of old heritage , fresh produce , first class wines, colourful culture and art. Also visit a number of award winning wineries , some offering superb dinning and all offering tasting the year round.

We had a fabulous 2 days in the Valley visiting a few of the many wineries, cheese and chocolate outlets, and craft brewers. Ironbark had a special of good size pizza and beer for $15. Restaurants offer quality fare. Walk off your indulgence at picturesque Bell's Rapids, or allow plenty of time for Whiteman Park. This is a large area combining bushland, tram, train and vintage bus rides with motor and transport museums. Great for family picnics.

Do I have to pay to visit the winery in swan valley? and also would I have to book the place to say I’m visiting?

I want to take friends somewhere pleasant after dropping their bags off at an airport hotel so we can spend time catching up for a few hours.
They leave again next morning so want to maximise the time together. With your intimate knowledge of the Swan Valley, where would you
suggest? Even Guildford but don't want it to be too busy. Thanks.

Your cost per person will depend upon the level of restaurant, winery or cafe you wish to attend. Generally $50 pp plus wine should be an average - less of course at cafe. The Chocolate Factory should be included to your visit if you are a chocolate lover - there is also a restaurant there. There are a number of good restaurants with local wines and you may need to research some of these first as the area can get busy and driving/looking could distract you.
