About
This fairy tale castle looks down majestically across the Alsace plain for more then 850 years. Towering at 757 m over picture perfect villages and colourful vineyards, it is one of France's most widely visited castles. Restored in the early 20th century, its current state reflects how it looked in the 15th century. Passing the main gate of the impressive Haut-Koenigsbourg is to enter the medieval world. An enjoyable and breathtaking experience! The castle is open all year round except 1 January, 16 October, 25 and 26 December.

    Very nice castle!
I arrived from Basel by train to Selestat. From here I took the 500 bus, which takes about 30 minutes to the castle. The castle is very nicely renovated and the visiting route is very well made, being easy to follow. I spent about 90 minutes visiting it. Very nice! Although I didn't know about it until my visit to France, I'm glad I discovered him.
Thank you for your comment. We are delighted that you were able to discover the castle and that you enjoyed the visit! See you soon, The Haut-Koenigsbourg team

An honest-to-gosh, authentic European castle - not to be missed
We originally planned our visit to the Chateau du Haut Koenigsbourg as a time-filler between other activities. Instead, we found ourselves in awe and wonderment with the chateau's hillside location, size and overall preservation. Finding the entrance was a little challenging (honest), but, once inside, we were truly gobsmacked. Highly, highly recommended.
Thank you very much for your recommendation and enthusiastic feedback on your experience. We are happy that you had a pleasant time at the castle and we hope to see you soon for new discoveries! The Haut-Koenigsbourg castle’s team

    Great.
This Castle is absolutely worth visiting. Excellent restoration work was done at the turn of the last century and this means we can now appreciate this fantastic site. Highly recommended the ticket price of nine euros is exceptionally reasonable and the prices at the onsite cafe are similarly very competitive.
Thank you very much for your recommendation and for your compliments. We are pleased that you enjoyed your visit to the castle. The restaurant Le757 and associated services (souvenir shop, bookshop, pavilion) is run separately from the castle: we will pass on your positive comments to the manager. Best regards, The Haut-Koenigsbourg castle’s team

Manificant castle, although it is not original
This is a manificant castle. The view is excelent. It is well restaured around 1900 based on an old mediaval ruine. At that time they tried to restore it as original as possible. Because of its popularity is is busy is most parts of the year. a shuttle bus runs from Selestat , execept the first months of the year, but you can reach it by public transport if you take a bus to close villages and hike a beatiful walk

An aerial view of this pink sandstone castle is impressive. The castle is mentioned for the first time in the 12th century, it stands on top of a hill in an area that was once a very important trade route. What you experience today is from a large restoration project that took place in the early 20th c as the 15th century castle that was left had been abandoned. The reconstruction stays true to the typical architecture of 15th-16th century castles. We enjoyed exploring the castle, as well as the children that were visiting with us.

The visit to this Chateau was amazing. Be sure to go on a clear day because the views are fabulous. The reconstruction was explained in detail (also in English) in each of the rooms. The furnishings, doors, lights, old stoves, and windows were stunning. It took us about 1 hour to move through the castle. We bought tickets on site - no lines, few visitors in February!
WARNING: We arrived about 10:30 with a stream of other cars and parked our rental car alongside the road leading up to the castle - not far from the top. People were parking behind us, walking up the hill constantly, seemingly a busy spot. Unfortunately when we returned to our car we found the rear left window smashed open and a bag with some extra clothing gone. The vandals apparently move very quickly - to smash and grab because other items in the car (in front and right rear seats) were not taken. Ugghhh, we tried not to let this ruin our day. A very helpful French man who was putting leaflets on car windows for a local restaurant, helped us sort out our next steps. Since all gendarmerie offices are closed from 12-2 in France - we cleaned up the window in order to drive, took photos, and proceeded on our route to Ribeauville. Another kind French person there helped us get to the police station at 2 to file a vandalism report - needed for our insurance and the Hertz rental company in Colmar. The gendarme did not speak any English - but I managed to communicate with my college French. Lesson learned - NEVER leave any belongings in your locked car! Now I have my hands full processing the damage payment through my VISA insurance.

Yes, the castle is really impressive and the view on the valley is marvellous. However, at the entrance it was told to us that there is a lot of stairs and that toddlers need to be carried (which was not doable given the heat and the hour of the day). So we sticked around and look at the outside with a bit of frustration.

Thank you for your feedback. Our many steps mean that pushchairs are not accessible, which is why we recommend that you bring a baby carrier if you are visiting with a toddler... This prohibition is indicated on our website. We look forward to welcoming you next time, The Haut-Koenigsbourg team

an 8 century medieval castle extremely well renovated in 1900-1908. On site guides and well setup audioguide. NOT for anyone with walking disability or can’t step up numerous stairs.

Thank you for your recommendation and the advice you gave to other visitors. A little extra advice: the tour route includes 300 steps, which are not accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs... Total tourist trap. Perhaps the million kids enjoyed it more that we did. Pretending that you are in the middle of Game of Thrones is kind of unappealing for adults. The view is gorgeous, if you can get through from the crowds.

Hello and thank you for your review. We're sorry you didn't fully enjoy your visit. regarding the string attendance you have experienced, indeed Haut-Koenigsbourg castle is one of the most visited cultural sites in France and therefore very busy in summer. Still, we would also like to point out that we never pretended to make our visitors feel like they are in the middle of Game of Thrones. Indeed, even if the castle was restored and refurnished in the early 20th century, 70% of the walls are original, some of which date back to the 12th century! The museum's collections of furniture and weapons include objects from the 15th and 17th centuries. To find out more about the scientific aspect of the restoration work carried out by architect Bodo Ebhardt: https://www.haut-koenigsbourg.fr/fr/le-chateau/neuf-siecles-d-histoire/la-restauration-chateau/. It was worth taking the guided tour. There were many people and parking was hard. This is the only castle around that has been restored. There is a cafeteria at the entrance.

Thank you for your comment and the information you shared with other visitors. We will pass on your compliments about the guided tour to our team of guides. Regarding the parking problems you describe, they are linked to the configuration of the Haut-Koenigsbourg site, as it is a mountain fortress. We are aware of these difficulties, and are currently looking into ways of improving access to the massif. The Haut-Koenigsbourg team
