About
This fairy tale castle looks down majestically across the Alsace plain for more then 850 years. Towering at 757 m over picture perfect villages and colourful vineyards, it is one of France's most widely visited castles. Restored in the early 20th century, its current state reflects how it looked in the 15th century. Passing the main gate of the impressive Haut-Koenigsbourg is to enter the medieval world. An enjoyable and breathtaking experience! The castle is open all year round except 1 January, 1 May, and 25 December.

Yes, the castle is really impressive and the view on the valley is marvellous. However, at the entrance it was told to us that there is a lot of stairs and that toddlers need to be carried (which was not doable given the heat and the hour of the day). So we sticked around and look at the outside with a bit of frustration.

Thank you for your feedback.
Our many steps mean that pushchairs are not accessible, which is why we recommend that you bring a baby carrier if you are visiting with a toddler...
This prohibition is indicated on our website.
We look forward to welcoming you next time,

an 8 century medieval castle extremely well renovated in 1900-1908. On site guides and well setup audioguide. NOT for anyone with walking disability or can’t step up numerous stairs.

Thank you for your recommendation and the advice you gave to other visitors. A little extra advice: the tour route includes 300 steps, which are not accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs... We are happy that you had a good time at the castle. See you soon in Alsace!

Total tourist trap. Perhaps the million kids enjoyed it more that we did. Pretending that you are in the middle of Game of Thrones is kind of unappealing for adults. The view is gorgeous, if you can get through from the crowds.

Hello and thank you for your review. We're sorry you didn't fully enjoy your visit. regarding the string attendance you have experienced, indeed Haut-Koenigsbourg castle is one of the most visited cultural sites in France and therefore very busy in summer. Still, we would also like to point out that we never pretended to make our visitors feel like they are in the middle of Game of Thrones.
Indeed, even if the castle was restored and refurnished in the early 20th century, 70% of the walls are original, some of which date back to the 12th century! The museum's collections of furniture and weapons include objects from the 15th and 17th centuries. To find out more about the scientific aspect of the restoration work carried out by architect Bodo Ebhardt: https://www.haut-koenigsbourg.fr/fr/le-chateau/neuf-siecles-d-histoire/la-restauration-chateau/.

It was worth taking the guided tour. There were many people and parking was hard. This is the only castle around that has been restored. There is a cafeteria at the entrance.

We will pass on your compliments about the guided tour to our team of guides.
Regarding the parking problems you describe, they are linked to the configuration of the Haut-Koenigsbourg site, as it is a mountain fortress. We are aware of these difficulties, and are currently looking into ways of improving access to the massif.

We were taken to this beautiful 20th century recreation of an old historical castle on our tour to the region of Alsace. It was a great tour to see a medieval castle recreated.

We originally planned our visit to the Chateau du Haut Koenigsbourg as a time-filler between other activities. Instead, we found ourselves in awe and wonderment with the chateau's hillside location, size and overall preservation. Finding the entrance was a little challenging (honest), but, once inside, we were truly gobsmacked. Highly, highly recommended.

If you can get yourself here without a tour bus it's better. Parking is free. The castle is quite interesting. Mobility/fitness required.

I arrived from Basel by train to Selestat. From here I took the 500 bus, which takes about 30 minutes to the castle.
The castle is very nicely renovated and the visiting route is very well made, being easy to follow. I spent about 90 minutes visiting it. Very nice! Although I didn't know about it until my visit to France, I'm glad I discovered him.

In case small children cannot walk too uphill:
- can I drop them in front of the castle entrance and then look for parking or still they will need uphill walk (how much??)
- how many stair UPHILL in the castle?
- what hours great chances to find parking right next to castle entrance (End September)?
- What to write in WAZE/GOOGLE Maps to get the right spot?

Only disabled parking at top. If they can't manage to walk to the castle then it's maybe not worth taking them as there is a lot of walking around it.
Buongiorno, la visita al castello va prenotata? O è possibile acquistare in loco i biglietti? Grazie

Hello,
We will be visiting the castle in December 2019. I have 1 question concerning the shuttle: is the stop for the shuttle outside of arrivals at the Selestat train station? I'm asking because we are on a tight train schedule and don't want to search for the stop for risk of missing it.
Please reply at your earliest convenience; thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Anna(Canada)

Hello, I will be travelling with my family to Colmar in December and would like to go out to Haut-Koenigsbourg on a weekday (Tues 18) which is when this would be possible but I cannot find any tours/transport that seem to operate on weekdays in December. Is this correct? Is there any other way of getting to the castle from Colmar? Unfortunately we will not have a car. Thanks in advance!
