- DavidLille, France1,899 contributionsGreat. This Castle is absolutely worth visiting. Excellent restoration work was done at the turn of the last century and this means we can now appreciate this fantastic site. Highly recommended the ticket price of nine euros is exceptionally reasonable and the prices at the onsite cafe are similarly very competitive.Thank you very much for your recommendation and for your compliments. We are pleased that you enjoyed your visit to the castle. The restaurant Le757 and associated services (souvenir shop, bookshop, pavilion) is run separately from the castle: we will pass on your positive comments to the manager. It is well restaured around 1900 based on an old mediaval ruine. At that time they tried to restore it as original as possible. Because of its popularity is is busy is most parts of the year. a shuttle bus runs from Selestat , execept the first months of the year, but you can reach it by public transport if you take a bus to close villages and hike a beatiful walkThank you for your comment and the information you shared with other visitors. - Linda G85 contributionsAmazing fully intact Medieval castle with stunning views from the top bWow! Amazing medieval castle that is in such good condition you are able to go through the entire castle and all the way to the top where the views are sensational. One of the highlights of our 5 weeks in France and something we just stumbled across. Lots of stairs but they are staggered between each different level so they aren’t too daunting. The main dining hall room was amazing, lots of furnished rooms in what you can imagine was how the castle was, a the top there is a room or armory, weapons and canons. Try and get there early to avoid the crowds and get a car park. The road is one way to the cattle with Parking only on one side but if you don’t get a park by the top the road loops back down past the castle and also had parking.Thank you for your recommendation and for the advice you have given to other visitors. We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay at the château and that you fell under the spell of its pink sandstone walls :) See you soon in Alsace! We booked two tickets for the first visit of the day, 9:30am. Parking is in allocated spaces down the access road and on busy days this would mean a lengthy yomp uphill to get to the entrance. As it was visitors restricted so not a consideration. No guided tours and rather paltry information on boards. Three or four real life guides dressed in costume but my french was mostly inadequate although wild boar and soup featured in kitchen talk!
Huge structure and painstakingly restored with information about design engineering and equipment. Left me a bit unimpressed. Top rampart with cannons partly taken up with story boards for variety of graphic art inspired by castle.
Lots of stairs, no good for mobility impaired at the moment. Curiously unemotional visit as castle didn’t seem to come to life. Face masks obligatory and very few people. However it was open and steps had been put in place to maintain health and safety.
Views pretty good. Location perched high up 800m impressive. A bit of a 5/10 for me.

The castle itself is on a spectacular spot. Having been renovated in the early 1900's, it is a beautiful example of what a medieval castle looks like. We took the guided tour (In French, did not check if an English option is available). The guide was passionate and very knowledgeable. This tour takes about 50 minutes.

This castle is an example of how to do the restauration right, ladies and gentlemen. Stunning from the oustide, marvelously appointed on the inside, great views all around, well signposted, this remains one of my favorite castles in all of Europe. Lots of parking on the road leading up (well-marked). My only gripe is that you're no longer allowed to go to the herb garden - I had fond memories of visiting that one a while back. I hope that it's a temporary restriction.

Thank you very much for your recommendation and enthusiastic feedback on your experience. Indeed, the medieval garden which visit left you fond memories, is currently being restructured and will only reopen next year... We are happy that you had a pleasant time at the castle and we hope to see you soon for new discoveries!

Very impressive castle from far and from outside. Been years I wanted to visit the place so I was well excited. Car park is free but you may need to walk uphill. Price for the entrance was reasonable but it was a BIG disappointment as we walked through a few medieval rooms with no particular charm and then the visit is over.. the mill is not open to the public and the medieval garden is s joke.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that the visit did not live up to your expectations.
For your information, most areas of the château can be visited during this "classic" tour. Some areas, such as the dungeon for example, can only be visited during special guided tours as it is not possible for more than 18 people to enter simultaneously for security reasons.

This was an amazing visit. The castle is well restored with lots of information. Parking was tricky at the time of day we went (about 11:15) but as we left, spaces were more readily available. Other reviewers from earlier in the year had no problems. Other reviews didn’t mention an audio guide so it must be new. It was excellent except that the ticket hall is after the start so you can’t start listening until about the third point! Hopefully they will find a solution to this. A bit more signage would help, I think. Having said that, it was an amazing place to visit.

Good morning and thank you for your comment. Indeed, with its 560,000 visitors in 2019, Haut-Koenigsbourg castle is one of the most visited cultural sites in France and is a very busy place in the summer. Concerning the parking problems that you describe, they are linked to the configuration of the Haut-Koenigsbourg site since it is a medieval mountain fortress. Regarding the audio guides, the map that you are given with the device shows you where the starting point for the audio tour is. It is located further down, before the ticket office. However, we will pass on your comments in order to improve your visit. Best regards,

The Parking is awful and chaotic one long row of cars circling the castle waiting for a parking spot. cars are parked so close that some of them have 1 inch between bumpers.
Those who came out of the castle to their cars found themselves stuck in the same row of cars and could not leave the premises right away.
Like a lot of others we left again after waiting 45 minutes for a parking spot.
In Germany or US there would be guidet parking at so popular attraction.

Thank you for your feedback. The parking problems you describe are linked to the configuration of the Haut-Koenigsbourg site, which is a mountain fortress. We are aware of these difficulties, and are currently looking into ways of improving access to the massif.

Really enjoyed our visit to the castle. It is perched high atop a hill and has great views of the surrounding valley and a couple of other castle ruins below. Because the castle was preserved it is very easy to get a feel for what life might have been like to live there. We took the train from Strasbourg, then the bus up to the castle. We had to wait quite a long time for the bus, as we had caught an early train and the bus had not started running that early so keep that in mind. Also, there is a lot written in English so it’s easy to learn about the history.

We spent around 2 hours walking around the castle. It is well restored, currently there is no tour or audio tour. You do a self guided tour and there are signed every where with description of the rooms. The tour is well organized you can go only in one path. Really recommend if you are in the area.

While Haut-Koenigsbourg may not be significant historically for any major battles or sieges, it is historically important in why it was restored and how it was restored. The castle serves as an education to the sponsorship of Kaiser Wilhelm and the exacting standards of Boda to restore the castle. A similar restoration in the 21st century could not complete in less time or to the same exacting standards as Boda. Visiting the castle gives a unique perspective in what the living arrangements were like centuries ago and allows exploration of much with little roped off.

In case small children cannot walk too uphill:
- can I drop them in front of the castle entrance and then look for parking or still they will need uphill walk (how much??)
- how many stair UPHILL in the castle?
- what hours great chances to find parking right next to castle entrance (End September)?
- What to write in WAZE/GOOGLE Maps to get the right spot?
Written 8 August 2023
Only disabled parking at top. If they can't manage to walk to the castle then it's maybe not worth taking them as there is a lot of walking around it.

Hello,
We will be visiting the castle in December 2019. I have 1 question concerning the shuttle: is the stop for the shuttle outside of arrivals at the Selestat train station? I'm asking because we are on a tight train schedule and don't want to search for the stop for risk of missing it.
Please reply at your earliest convenience; thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
