Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A sad memorial. A whole village gathered and executed by the nazis in World War 2.
These times should never return and educate the people around you for that reason...

Stopped briefly at this memorial. Would have spent longer but we arrived during a hurricane. The memorial is on the top of a hill with beautiful views. It lists all the names of the townspeople who were massacred by the Nazis and their ages. Children as young as 2 months were killed. Impossible not to be deeply moved!!

This was a very poignant reminder of the horrors that the Greeks suffered during WW2 under the Nazis.

A monument to hundreds of people from one small village rounded up and killed by the Nazis in retaliation to attacks by resistance fighters.

Reading through all the names you can see how whole families were wiped out and their ages with some being babies.

Our taxi driver brought us here on a day trip out and even now his accounts of what the Germans did during the war bring back a frightening reminder of how inhuman man can be to others.

Distomo is currently a nice village but is best known for the massacre of 214 men, women and children by the SS in 1944. Incredible that people can be blinded to commit such attrocities.

A town with a tragic history due to the massacre of its population by the Germans in 1944.

If you intend on visiting Ossios Loukas which is on the same road, it's well worth the stop to pay your respects at the memorial. There is also a museum inside the town opposite the mayors office with photos of all the victims & also photos of their skulls where one can see the bullet holes.

I visited here in October 2013.

We were driving north to Arachova and came upon this memorial. It's all in Greek, so we had a hard time understanding it, but translated it later and came to learn that the Waffen-SS killed 214 men, women and children in the town of Distomo. Very heart rending.

Not many have heard about this massacre of 218 villagers in 1944 but please pay your respects if close by. This is a war crime from only 74 years ago and the descendants of those who died are still fighting for justice. “When will we ever learn”. A very moving experience.

The village was the site of a notorious massacre by the Waffen SS on 10th June, 1944. There had been some Greek resistance in the area, including an ambush of a German column, but there was no direct link with the village. Nevertheless 218 villagers, men women and children were slaughtered as an act of reprisal.
It was only in the 1980’s that a powerful memorial to the dead was put in place on the hill above the village. It’s signposted and possible to either walk or drive up to see it – not to be missed, a powerful evocation of the horrors of war.
Tip: combine a visit to Distomo with a visit to the nearby monastery of Hosios Loukas.
Second tip: if you are moved by this place, then try to get across the Gulf of Corinth to Kalavryta so as to visit another massacre site.

It 's a quite shocking experience because no human being can understand why this massacre took place and almost a whole village was slaughtered in the most atrocious way.. Only sadness and disgust for the executioners...

On top of the hill above the village a well maintained site with a well designed marble abstract monument, listing the dead and their ages.
It only lacked an explanation in multiple languages of the significance of the mausoleum which we obtained over coffee from a village resident in the village. There are still a few of the residents who remember the events of that regrettable day.
