Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Heard about this group of people. Able to visit this village. How the ladies endure this neck-breaking life? The "necklace" is made of long and heavy rod. Girls as young as six years old start to put this necklace around their necks. I don't really understand for what reasons, maybe for attraction, safety or traditional beliefs.

A nice visit back in time. Most of these people live in tradition dating back centuries. It's a glimpes into a past culture that may not exist in the future, so a great experience

Despite the fact we specifically asked to visit a non-touristic village (which we did), the entire experience was rather underwhelming, and I cannot understand the hoards of tourists pouring to these villages to see "locals" live their lives.
Most of the "locals" aren't locals and most of the places are nothing but an amusement park where those "locals" work as "locals" and go to their real homes at the end of the day.
Our non-touristic village was somehow authentic, but other than some poor kids (which seemed very happy with the little they've got), there was nothing there to see or experience.

From Burma but living in Thailand are the Karon tribe , commonly known as the Long neck people . They are for me, unforgetable. I marveled at the weight of the brass rings they where around thir necks. At the age of seven the little girls are given their first rings. It is startling at first when you see them , but quickly you realize how proud of their dress they are.

Very authentic and interesting place to visit. Despite it is a small village, it creates a grate experience: to see, to buy, to try and to come in touch with the village people.
They make authentic hand-made things

The Princess Mother established in 1988 the Doi Tung Development Project under which she improved the living conditions of the hill tribes socially, economically and environmentally. Before that the people lived mainly from opium production. Today the new generation of the hill tribe villages is educated, has a job and a future.

We went to this attraction with a local lady called Peung, who told us all about the history of the hill tribes and explained that the area was mainly a chance for tribes to sell their cottage industry goods to tourists. However, we encountered friendly and relaxed people who simply wanted a chance to sell their hand made beautiful goods. There is an element from some tourists of a kind if curious entertainment, BUT really it's very little in difference to a street seller in Bangkok, which no one gets on their high horse about. This at least gives you a chance to talk to people and learn about their culture

Commercialised.
Embarrasing to be walking through anothers "back yard"
Is there ever any privacy for these people?
Compelled to buy buy being approached by women and children
Did not feel like I had learnt anything about their cultures
Must be a terrible way to live for these people
We would as tourists be better going to the Hill tribe museums

Visiting the Hill Tribes was one of the highlights of our trip to Thailand. We saw women/children from 5 different tribes and they dressed in there traditional clothing. After touring the village, you can buy hand-made handicrafts that the Hill Tribe women have made. Things are very cheap and you can buy them from the people who actually made them - which is better than buying in a store.

We also saw women and children from the Karen Tribe - the long neck tribe where they put rings around their necks to elongate them.

A must-see. Go see the Hill Tribes!
