Journey back to the days of chivalry ! From the heights of its rocky crag, Foix castle with its three towers and soaring walls offers exceptional views of the Pyrenees. Built in the year one thousand, it was originally a military fortress before being transformed into the home of the illustrious Counts of Foix such as Gaston Fébus, author of the 'Livre de la Chasse' (Book of the Hunt) among other works, and Henri IV who became King of France. It now houses the Ariège département museum: the bed of Henri IV is on display. The castle's various rooms are dedicated to the art of building in the Middle Ages, the history of the castle and of the Counts of Foix, as well as temporary exhibitions. Exhibitions • Gaston Fébus, Enlightened Prince of the Pyrenees. • The Universe of King Henri IV. • Andorra. Voyage to the Heart of the Pyrenees. • Into médiéval builder's secret.

The title says it all : great views while walking up (stones n pebbles so walking shoes rather than flip flop) but the castle itself mostly consists of a couple of towers with very narrow staircase that makes for difficult going up and down especially...More

The size is great for kids (and adults): it does not overwhelm, you can imagine how it worked and there are a number of great exhibits that work well, even for kids (how the castle was build, the function of the rooms, some defence strategy)....More

This castle is visually striking with its three distinct towers from different eras. Never taken by force, this is a formidable fortification. Even walking up to it in hot weather will provoke a healthy cleansing sweat! The original owners, the Counts of Foix were a...More

Thanks Douglas for your review ! Works are planned in 2018 for a better accessibility to the castle indeed... Before this, you need to walk to the top to deserve the best view in Foix !

It takes a visit to a castle to truly understand and appreciate medieval history. This chateau proved special. From a progressive walk through the three towers, I gained an insight into the historical, technical and social context of medieval life and how buildings were constructed....More

Imposing medival castle set high above the town of Foix. Stunning 360° view of the surrounding landscape. Lots to explore with a museum and a chance to fire a replica medival longbow or crossbow. Steep climbs and lots of stairs, so not ideal for the...More

We spent several hours exploring nooks and crannies of Foix, but the reason we planned the stop was for the magnificent Chateau de Foix perched high above the city. Wonderful walk and views, nice castle, too.

The chateaux sits high above Foix. It commands a position with a 360 degree view of the surrounding area, and way off to the snow capped peaks of Andorra. It has been beautifully restored, with original artefacts to see throughout. You need sturdy shoes and...More

You can access Foix by train from Toulouse. It's a short 1 hour ride. We went by car, and the drive was just about 1 hour as well. You can park in the few parking lots available in the city and walk to the castle....More
