Experience the nature and silence surrounded by snowclad mountains in the valley of Mathisdalen. In a sleigh drawn by the norwegian fjord horse, the breed that is known from the disney movie Frozen. You will also have the upportunity to see and say hallo to our norwegian short tale sheep when we return back to the farm. Our sheep have the upportunity to be outside all year long, and in the summertime they lives side by side to the reindeer up in the mountains. Our experienced guides will pick you up at your location in Alta and bring you to our farm. Approximately 30 min. drive. The price includes hot beverage and snacks served inside the lavvo infront of the fireplace. Warm clothing provided if needed. Restroom availible for our guests.

We were fortunate to enjoy a lovely sleigh ride around Viggo’s family farm. We were picked up from our cruise port by Viggo and driven to his farm up in the mountains. We were welcomed by his wife and daughter, Laila and Marit. The area was so peaceful and magical with the snow and scenery. One of the ponies was brought out and attached to the sleigh and Viggo took us on a ride around his farm talking all the time about life on the farm. On our return Marit took us into a traditional Sami tepee called a lavuu where there was a fire in the middle and hot coffee, tea, beautifully cinnamons buns, made by Laila, and cold meats for us to enjoy. We sat around the fire talking to Marit about life as a young person living in Alta. Viggo and Marit then showed us where the animals are kept in the winter months and the sheep were very friendly and came up to us when we walked up to their pens. The experience is one we shall remember for a long time. Thank you to you all.

We were lucky enough to experience the warm hospitality of Viggo, Laila and Marit at their Arctic farm this morning.
We were collected by Viggo right by our cruise ship in Alta and driven to their family farm where we were introduced to all the family. Then one of the family’s Norwegian fjord pony’s and Viggo took us for a sleigh ride around the snowy countryside which was spectacular. All the time Viggo was telling us about his family and his life which was so interesting. On our return to the farm we were treated to hot drinks and snacks including Laila’s gorgeous warm cinnamon buns, seated round a fire in the family’s Norwegian tepee and being entertained by Marit. Before being brought back to the ship, we saw the family’s sheep and some pets!
It was such a wonderful morning, a chance to experience a true Norwegian way of life with a very welcoming family.
Thank you so much!

We are six friends who cruise together often. We prefer to book our own excursions. Some are great. Some not so much. We are on a 12 night Norway cruise and we all agree that this has been our most favorite excursion of all!! Annika and her father Viggo (I hope I got this right) were warm, friendly and accommodating. Their farm is the loveliest quiet slice of Heaven we’ve ever been to. We talked for hours about their lives and their farm. We were welcomed into their lavuu a tepee like structure where a fire was blazing and hot chocolate and coffee awaited us. Along with Annika’s mother’s home made cinnamon buns. More talk. Went to see the sheep in their pen. Got to pet the horses who had taken us on a lovely half hour sleigh ride. Such a great afternoon. Highly recommended.

Dashing thru the snow,
In a one-horse open sleigh.
O're the fields we go,
Northern Lights to show the way!

Magical experience! The sleigh ride is thru farm and woods, just beautiful. The horse wears a bell and the sleigh has rear coach lights. It was a long ride, and plenty of blankets to keep us warm. Our night ride was also graced with northern lights!
We were then treated to cinnamon rolls and local meats inside a warm Sami tent. This was accompanied by good conversation and lots of information.
Finally, we visited the barn with the horses and sheep.
We were picked up and dropped off at our cruise ship. Because we had talked about the churches we had visited, Viggo stopped by his 200+ year old church and invited us inside.
Overall, a fabulous experience. Highly recommend if you are near Alta! *****

We booked this trip for December 23rd, which we forgot was the Norwegian Christmas Eve. Felt a little guilty disturbing this family during their festive time but they couldn't have been more accommodating.

Viggo picked us up and drove us to his working sheep farm. We broke their record for the coldest visitors at -28c! Daughter Marit made sure we were dressed for the conditions then Viggo took us for our sleigh ride by moonlight (at 2pm!). Afterwards we went into the Lavvu (Sami tent) for some delicious tapas prepared by Leila and Marit told us the history of the farm and her life growing up in Alta. It was lovely and intimate.

This was followed by a tour of the farm and meeting some of the animals then being driven back to our drop off point whilst all the time being told stories of the history of the area.

A superb trip provided by a lovely, friendly family. Very much recommended.

Omdal and his family were amazing! We were picked up promptly at our cruise ship...no worries with timing...and driven to his 75 acre farm. His family was there to greet us along with those beautiful Norwegian horses. The sleigh was covered due to rain and he drove us all over. Upon return, his lovely daughter had prepared a feast which we ate in Sami-type hut complete with a warming fire. Omdal shared stories of how the farm operated and gave us a tour of the sheep and goat areas. Just a wonderful excursion. If you want to witness a special side of Norway, do this trip. You will forever remember it.
