About Holmen Husky - Dog Sledding Tours
Dog sledding is the best way of experiencing the Arctic nature. Let us take you on a ride to discover a new world. A world of stunning beauty, rugged landscapes and of silence – pure and breath-taking. Drive your own sled or enjoy the ride as a passenger, either way, we promise you the memory of a lifetime. Our lodge lies a short while outside of Alta city centre, surrounded by pristine Arctic nature. A team of huskies will take you out in pairs, as mushers or passengers, riding through the snowy forest and on the ice that covers the famous Alta River. There’s no better way of getting close to nature than this. While the huskies love to run in frigid temperatures, we’ll equip you with a thermal suit to keep the cold at bay. But don’t fear the winter – bask in its beauty. Welcome to Holmen Husky Lodge. A world of unreal contrasts. Next to nothing, close to everything. This is Arctic living.

Booked via Fred Olsen. This trip consisted of a 20/25 min ride on a sled pulled by the very energetic and enthusiastic huskies and then we entered the pen where the puppies are kept followed by a talk by a very enthusiastic musher. Watch out for overhanging branches on the sled ride plus be careful in the puppy pen as they will take your gloves and use them as a chew toy. Overall an enjoyable experience

We booked this tour as it was a bit of a bucket list item for my wife. We had a full bus load of people, but they broke us up into three manageable groups. We first went and played with the puppies (5-6 month old) and it was a lot of fun. Word of warning though, don't wear snow boots with fur trimmings. One lady had all the fur torn off her boots by the naughty pups. Next was our sled ride which was a lovely 25 minutes or so, through a well worn path through the snow, but very scenic all the same. There's a few bumps along the way, so if you bruise easily, this may not be for you. After the sled ride we went in to the "Lavu" (large tent) where an open fire was waiting, along with hot coffee or hot Blackurrant drink, which was very nice. All in all, a good value excursion.

Cruising up the coast of Norway we were looking at what to do in Alta. Sure, the ship had any number of excursions but they were all booked out and who wants to go with hundreds of other people anyway. Then we found Holmen Husky Sled Tours on the internet and all I can say is DON’T GO ANYWHERE ELSE - THERE IS NOTHING BETTER! We were picked up from near the ship and taken to their lodge where we were suited up in thermal gear and given a brief lesson on how to handle the sled. I was the nominated driver while my wife took all the pictures although you could swap around half way along. There were six dogs to each sled and they were rearing to go. Then we were off! At a gentle trot we were led by the the lead sled through the forest, along the lake, up and down hills in beautiful snowy conditions - for a whole hour. If there is nothing else on your bucket list, you must do this. Arriving back at the lodge we were then treated to a warm drink inside a lavu (tent), where we could relax and ask any number of questions about the dogs or mushing in general. Then it was off to play with the dogs who not only loved to run, but were quite social as well. This is a must do experience run by a professional organisation who not only care about the dogs but do their best to give you an experience of a lifetime. Coming from Australia, there is not much chance of doing this down under. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Feedback from the ship excursions was that their sled ride only lasted about 20 minutes, you didn’t get to drive and there were three to a sled - glad we didn’t book.
