The Sunderland Empire Theatre is a grand old, large theatrical venue which opened in 1907. It houses all the latest UK touring musical theatre productions which aren't necessarily seen in nearby Newcastle. Because of the size of the venue, most large productions such as Wicked and Phantom of the Opera are performed here. Most smaller touring productions are in and out within a week though so catch them whilst you can.

We arrived at the theatre to watch a show last night and unfortunately we arrived for the wrong performance, however the staff were really helpful and arranged alternate seats for myself and daughters. We had a lovely evening and really enjoyed Joseph, thanks to all staff and performers for a great evening

Sunderland Empire is dear to my heart from going as a little girl to the pantomime to now being in my 50’s on numerous occasions mainly to see musicals. Most recently The Motown story where we had a power cut half way through & were given free tickets for the next showing. Thriller next & lastly Joseph. All absolutely brilliant shows & the casts amazing! The Empire is a beautiful building inside & out. It’s kept its charm from an era way back. The staff are friendly & courteous at all times. Drinks are a tad expensive, but you get to expect that in these venues. The stairs up to the upper circle are “challenging”,but for people with mobility problems probably a nightmare. All in all I love coming to the Empire for a reasonable night of magical entertainment & always come away smiling & happy!
