Koldinghus was built in the middle of the 13th century, and in the centuries that followed it was one of Denmark's most important royal castles. In 1808 there was a fire that left the castle in ruins – a romantic relic. Today the castle has been restored and houses a museum which is a centre for cultural activities and special exhibitions of international standing.

Visited after it was recommended to us. Different to most castles in that emphasis was more on preservation than repair and restoration. Faberge exhibition was a bonus. Remarkable the way it has been repaired rather than faithfully restored and created spacious exhibition spaces.

We started from a walk around Koldinghus which was nice as the day was sunny and we made some nice photos of it from the lake. Then we went inside and were actually surprised how well it was restored. I really liked the old walls...More

lovely, picturesque 'castle' that's nice enough to have a wander about. Its like a maze inside however, so many doors, alleys, passageways so make sure if you take kids they are close enough to re-locate :) Great mix of the old and new inside however.

We found out about the fortress from the kind people who build miniby (Danish for mini-town) a project of reconstructing a downscaled model of Kolding (in the Geographical gardens). We asked, what is this impressive castle? We were told that the castle was renovated and...More

The castle has a good view of the city, the fiord . It's a special place for danish history. Design rooms are interesting for young creators in general.

The Koldinghus burned down in the early 1800s and has been restored since then. In recent years modern restorations were performed on part of the walls, creating a three-storey art gallery (at the time we were there, a local design school displayed its final projects)....More

A beautiful castle from the 13th century, with a mix of interesting exhibitions and a innovative way of showing both the castle in itself and the collections of silver, the dresses and the very much appreciated dress up room with 16th century clothing to try...More

It was interesting, not a castley castle but the exhibition was good. We went at Easter so they had an Easter hunt game for adults and kids too. More things could be written in English too tough. It's simple but a good half-day tour especially...More

Always a pleasure to visit the beautiful old Castle. Great idea with costumes available for playing dress up. Very good initiative for families travelling with little children. Beautiful surroundings. Always worth a visit.
