Really interesting memorial, easy to reach from the train station, on walking distance, the entrance is free, there are guided tours but you can visit the place by yourself, you can walk the corridors, the courtyards and enter some cells too

Bautzen (Bautzen) is the historic town of Sorbs in Upper Lusatia. Beautiful view of the city from the bridge.

This is an important destination for all mature, thinking people. It is not so much what you see, as what you hear. We caught a German tour. Our guide painted a clear picture of the total control exercised by the jailer over the prisoner. Even the simplest question (Are you a smoker?) gives the jailer another tool - regardless of... Very imposing and thought-provoking place. This former political prison is well worth a visit. There is English text, but you have to ask for it. I wish there had been translations of the biographies of the former prisoners.

The name Bautzen was apparently synonymous in the GDR era with this prison for political prisoners; the whole is now open to the public (no charge) as a memorial to the evil that was done here. Visitors have access to most parts of this sprawling complex, left pretty much as it was when the East German state collapsed in 1989.... More
