About
The monastery is apx 150km from Belgrade, close to the Belgrade-Niš highway. Monastery was luxuriously constructed, 1375-1377 as endowment of tzar Lazar. During last 600 years it was destroyed and rebult 5 times. Luckily reach fresco paintings stayed practicaly untouched. Only after 8 years after it had been built, prince Lazar got killed in the battle at Kosovo. Two years later his body was moved to Ravanica and it was there for 300 years. In the year of 1690, a patriarch from Pec- Arsenije Carnojevic fled from the Turkish rule over the Danube to Austria. The monks of Ravanica monastery also fled to Austria but they brought the relics of the saint prince with them. In the year of 1988 the relics was returned to his endowment where they still lie today. The monestary is one of the greatest monuments of serbian culture and history, as well as an original architectural construction. As from 1946it is functioning as a a women monastary.

The Ravanica monastery is considered to be one of the most important Serbian Orthodox monasteries. With its monumental iconography and historical, artistic and archaelogical importance, it has become one of the most visited sites by domestic and foreign tourists. If you're interested in local history and architecture, then this is the right place for you!

This was the first monastery we visited in Serbia. Its combination of ruined fortifications, well-kept church, and modern living quarters, situated in a rural setting, made for an enjoyable visit.

In June 2014 I visit this monastery with my family as we passing by and explore eastern Serbia around Čuprija and Despotovac. The monastery itself is very beautiful old architecture and it's womans monastery. There are also some rules if you want to visit this place, all men must have long trousers and women must have long dresses or skirts (no trousers). But there is anyway not a problem couse they have skirts for women to borrow. Also you can not have sleeveless T-shirt. In the monastery itself there's a shop with herbs, they made their own medicines, I bought several of them for myself. A lot of people came here couse it consider to be active place. I recommend everyone to visit this place and also Resavska banja nearby.

A very nice monastery and one of the most important Serbian monasteries. Unfortunately, taking photos is not allowed. Also you must be dressed according to their rules.

Small, beautiful monastery within walls, parking spots next to the monastery, free to enter, photogenic place, small, beautiful church, souvenir shop.

Ravanica Monastery is one of the orthodox monasteries locates in Central Serbia, near Manasija Monastery, one of the most important ones. Ravanica is a very nice monastery with a little church as the main building. Pitifully some parts of the wall are destroyed during Middle Ages, so now you can only see remains of it. Very romantic and interesting place to walk, see and enter in the church and learn about the history of Serbia.

Surroundings are nice, the monastery is very pretty and has an interesting history. There is also a small shop.

The fortified Ravanica monastery is not large, but is exquisite and located in a beautiful valley. I recommend visiting it in conjunction with the larger and more famous monastery of Manasija and, possibly, the Resava cave. Together with the Smederevo fortress on the Danube, it makes a wonderful day trip from Belgrade.
