It seems amazing how much of this huge structure still remains. At the end nearest the old city there are information boards about this and the adjacent bathhouse with much in English. Visit when seeing the very nearby Circo Romano. There is no charge to see the aquaduct

Quite impressive remains of the Aqueduct.
One very hot day we had rattled around the town Roman ruins from very early and were sitting in the shade by the Theatre Ticket Office mulling over whether to bother about the aqueduct in the heat and noticed one of these Tourist Train and carriage tours. We saw that it went to the aqueduct on its route so bought a couple of bottles of water, paid 5E and sat in the shade. Spanish commentary but he did a number of circle approaches to the monument so you get a very good multiple view in comfort.
Loved the remaining height of the stacks festooned with stork nests.

Erected by the Romans in the 1st century AD, it had the function of transporting water from the Proserpina Reservoir, 5 kilometers from the city. The visit is free access in a beautiful garden environment. You can park in the area, since it is a little far from the center.

We wanted to see Roman sites and Merida doesn't disappoint. We loved stopping at the Aueducto. Plenty of parking right there. Free to wander around. Only a couple people out and about enjoying it and they were more locals than tourists. Merida is a great town to visit & can probably see all the Roman sites within 3 hours.

Thirty-seven arches (about twenty five meters high) are still standing, made of alternating layers of brick and granite, approx. 21 meters high. The aqueduct was once six kilometers! long; the structure that is still standing is 1/7th of its original size. It crosses the little river Albarregas. It was built during the reign of Augustus. There is a lovely, half an hour walk between this one, the smaller Roman bridge and the Aqueduct San Lazaro. If you follow the river, the bank goes via very pretty gardens with the added bonus of bird watching. We saw: plovers, an oyster catcher, lots of different ducks, a kingfisher, cormorants, storks (lots), a great egret, a hoopoe, coots, and (flying over) Egyptian vultures, spoonbills and, best of all, a glossy ibis. I am not an expert birdwatcher but I could not think of any other dark ibis in the area :)) This was all in 30 minutes, without trying, nor binoculars!
Also, the Basilica of Santa Eulalia is quite close to the San Lazaro Aqueduct end. Splendid walk!

This acuaduct was just down the road from our apartment so I spent quite a lot of time wandering round the most complete end. The water carrying part has largely been lost and the ends peter out but the central section is pretty complete and very majestic.

This is a must-see if you are in Mérida. It is not as monumental as the all-granite aqueduct in Segovia but Mérida has two, arching over the river towards the town centre. They are both picturesque and there is a pleasant walk along the river where you can get up close.

This is a really great sight - even better in some ways than the aqueducts of Tarragona and Segovia. The marvel is that so much of it is still standing after all these years and you can really get a sense of how impressive it must have been in the days of Emerita. The storks that nest on it add a certain interest to it. The remains are about 30 metres tall and there's about 800 metres left of the aqueduct. It all makes for some very good photos on a sunny day. It seems better preserved than some of the other sites in Merida

There's a nice walk along the river side once you get down it, although you have to watch for the water sprinklers that can operate over the grass. We didn't, and we got rather wet from one coming our way. You can walk along to the other aqueduct and to the circus and make a circuit around the outermost Roman sites.
