    Nice Place but Commercialized
We did the typical day trip to Sonamarg almost at the end of our Kashmir trip. We had already completed Tarsar Marsar trek and already got mesmerizing views, so we were not expecting much from Sonamarg. When our car dropped at us at the start of the route to Thajiwas glacier and as usual, few horse owners came after us. Though I am strictly not in favour of animal-rides but agreed on peer pressure only on the condition that the horses are treated humanely and given sufficient breaks. Luckily, that day there was very less rush, so the horse owners agreed to our terms. The three of us were given three mules, Badal, Chetak and Badshah and we started with the ride. More than the surrounding scenery I was more amused with these three horses and their little activities. Soon I found out which horse had bonding with which one and hated which one. After reaching I even fed the three of them biscuits (it was the first time I came to know that horses also eat biscuits). Now, regarding the scenery...the starting of the trek was pretty dusty and views were OKish. But after we crossed the meadows and had a final ascend, the Thajiwas glacier got visible to us. Beyond the green meadows lay the mountains partially green and partially snow covered. There were cold little water streams originating from the glacier and flowing into the green meadows. This mixture of greenery and streams and snow is actually the real beauty of Kashmir and is something you will remember forever. We spent quite some time beside the streams just soaking in the beauty. There are a series of shops in this place selling maggi, biscuits, chai and kawah. We tried some but soon lost our peace as local kids continuously pestered us for money or food in these shops and shopkeepers allowed them to do so. Now, you can offer food to one or two kids but if six/seven kids line up its not easy. Plus, these kids are as if trained to go up to the tourists, particularly ladies, and beg. Instead, they should be sent to school. If we ignore the commercialization of the place we can conclude that it is a really beautiful place. If you are in Srinagar as a tourist (without any trek plans) then I would highly recommend Thajiwas glacier. However, if you have trekking plans then you can skip this as you will surely get similar views in all Kashmir treks. Also, in case you plan to hire horses, please make sure to treat them humanely and ask your guide to do so. Allow your horses to take water breaks on the way and do not forcefully make them go faster.

Sonmarg is literally heaven on earth.
Great place to visit while in Sonmarg. It’s a little hike of about 25 minutes. Donot fall for what the Pony riders tell you. It’s quite achievable on foot and I had a baby who carried all along.

Beautiful place but females solo traveller beware
Thajwas glacier distance is at the walking distance but some people can opt for Pony. I decided to walk. You will have stall for snacks with tea and coffee and also maggi. Good to spend a day. But after my trip I found men showing usual interest. Connecting in insta and dropping whatsapp text. I checked with other 2 friends of mine who experienced the same. Getting a text like "Hello Dear" and miss you we all received. These are both married men and single men. So beware!! Otherwise place is safe to travel but need to be cautious.

Loved to play in the snow!!
Firstly, all those horrible experiences mentioned by other travellers is true. If you need to beat that, please plan your travel with Shakil bhai as mentioned in some of the reviews. He's a gem of guy and probably only way to make you Kashmir holiday memorable. It was fully covered with snow when we visited in April. Heard from locals that snow was delayed this year and hence that much snow. Once you get rid of the sledge guys (absolute waste of money). the entire snow laden mountains were for us 4 to enjoy! We did not even bother to go to other points like Bakrangi bhaijan and all as we got all the snow we want. Ignore the sledge guys and after the initial 10-15 mins, enjoy the peace and then the Maggie of course!

    Sonmarg - serene and beautiful
The view was amazing. We missed fresh snowfall by 1 day. It's not commercialized as much as other places. It has beautiful view and lot of Bollywood movies have been shot here. If you can climb by yourself do that..no need to take sledge. Play in snow to your heart content.. there is sking option also available but we didn't opt for it as we were happy playing in snow. We went by Pony, but you can also trek if you want to.

A place, human is goin to destroy
The place is very beautiful but becoming overcrowded day by day. The beauty of place ruined by travellers and it feels like the stools of ponies spreader all around. People trying to loot you like they charge humongous for ponies ride, sledge ride etc. I had Maggie there but when he asked me that the price is ₹100/plate I was surprised. You need to bargain here a lot. The only guilt I had after visiting this place is our unsustainable tourism to these places will ruin the beauty and ecosystem of these places.

Walk instead of taking the mules
Amazing mesmerising views, it’s a beautiful walk, avoid the mule ride and walk all the way, the walk is pretty easy. We took the golf cart on way back since we got lazy but it’s easily walkable way back as well! Lovely place !

    Beautiful Walk, avoid the ponies
Beautiful walk to the glacier, it is about 3-4 kms with a very moderate incline. The walking road goes though lot of meadows and streams and is really enjoyable. We had to cross the pony path at couple of places and we were so glad that we had not taken them as it was dusty, smelly and everyone there seemed to be in a hurry.

    Visiting Glacier with a pony
Beautiful place with ice mountain, meadows and river. In summer one can enjoy the beauty of nature here. Around 3Km from the taxi stand. Always bargain with the pony owners.

We visited Thajiwas Glacier during Sep 2021. There was no snow as this time is the fag end of summer season. But we encountered beautiful landscapes with lush greens all around. There was a continuous flow of water as the glacier ice is melting on top of hills.

We took ponies from the Sonamarg taxi stand and paid 1000 each for to and fro travel. The local guides would ask for exorbitant prices and be ready to negotiate well. You will get tea and some basic snacks on chargeable basis at glacier. Weather changes very rapidly in this area so do carry some rain coat or umbrella if you have travelling in Sep/ Oct.

Overall, a must visit place in Sonamarg.

Our second trip to Sonamarg but this time we trekked to the Thajiwas Glacier.
It took us around 2.5 hours to reach the Glacier a 5 km trek; the weather was quite supportive as it was not snowing that period. You can even use road to trek which is more safer than hiking.
It was an enthralling experience, one can say it was inner peace; or a better connect with the basic elements of nature (Air, Water, Earth, Fire). A sense of belonging to these elements in their most primal forms, which we are deprived of in urban life.

We visited the Glacier on our way from Srinagar to Leh. This was basically the only stop-over in Sonmarg. You need to haggle really well for the horse ride here to the glacier, which is somewhere between and hour or an hour and half. We finally got the rates down to half of what they started with. The horses are in poor condition and are not shod. Be aware the the money you give is only for the horse ride, for sledges you need to pay separately at the glacier.
Views are great, and we did the 4 point sledge and it was fun. Weather is a bit finicky here, so it was raining a lil in between and then stopped

Thajiwas Glacier is a natural beauty. Large expanse of snow dotted with snow covered trees. Huge clearing where people are busy sledging, skiing, eating Maggi or just enjoying the mesmerizing 360 degree view.
Trail to Thajiwas Glacier is about 3km and starts from the main road. It is easily walkable if you are generally fit or you can hire a pony. Climb is relatively easier. We paid 3k per pony which we realized later was on the expensive side. So remember to bargain, or not, if you are feeling generous.
The clearing at the top has small slopes which are great for sledging. Kids love it. My 11 year old wanted to do it over and over again.
We hired a photographer too for about INR 1200 for unlimited photographs. They generally charge about INR 20 - 25 per pic but we chose to put an outer limit. The young guy was good and clicked pretty good photos.

Also be careful on the road or while walking up the trail, even with good snow shoes. It's very slippery when the snow hardens and turns to ice or sleet. Locals call it "sheesha aa gaya" which means snow has turned to mirror.

The place is beautiful, but the people are horrible. Rogues. Been there this month (May 2022) and had a very bad experience deling with the horse owners. They rip you off totally if you dont know how to bargain. They quote 5k per horse to take you from the main road to the top point. Please dont get fooled. Pay only not more than 1500/-. Just stick to your rate and all will bend down.

Sonamarg offers a full platter of beauty. Breathtaking landscapes, exotic mountains, tall trees, spalshing rivers and a grand tranquility all around. You will be spellbound by looking around the valley. Your eyes can't take pause for blinking and your camera for leaving behind any scene. That's why it has been a popular destination for shooting bollywood and other movies. A memorable pony ride for about an hour will take you to Thajiwas Glacier where you can also enjoy sledging. There are tea shops and snacks are waiting to warm you up. Summer is really pleasant with occassional chances of shower.

Sonemarg was our first pit stop in kashmir and we really enjoyed our trip to the Thajiwas glacier. We took a pony ride for 1000 per person both ways. The pony people started at 3000 per person. It is a 45 minutes pony ride and the views with chinar trees, pine trees, snow clad mountains everything was amazing. When we reached the snow sledge people kept pouncing on us and we had to take a sledge ride for 500 per person which was totally a waste of money.. The sledge ride took hardly 5 minutes and not worth the money.. So I recommend taking the pony ride and enjoying the snow..

Glacier is far far away and the end point of the trek would only provide a far away view of the glacier in October. It's a small 4km trek either by pony or on foot (very much walkable). We hired pony @1300/person (asking price was 2000). Don't know if this was a good bargain or not as it took only 30-40 mins to reach the final destination. The journey offers good view of mountains, rivers, meadows etc. But no snow in October yet and the Glacier is far far away.

This was one trip which will be remembered for all its uncertainties but thats the beauty .We travelled from Srinagar and reached Sonamarg quite comfortably .Such a beautiful ride up.
Sonamarg is beautiful ,you can well compare it or mistake it to be a little Swiss town.
To go to Thajiwas Glacier its a little pony ride but the trip is not like visiting Kasmir valley from Pahalgam .The path is less steep .In fact a lot of movies have been shot herewe were told,Thajiwas Glacier is a beauty .You can sit here for ages and paly around on sledges.
But the weather suddenly detoriated and there was rain and hail storms. We were completely stranded for some time amidst nature with no proper shelter .But we then decided to brave the rain and descend as advised by our guides.Rain soaked Kashmir was a different sight for us . sitting on the ponies.
In all do visit Sonamarg and Thajiwas,it a little slice of heaven on Earth.
