Not maintained well. Great history brhind this , should be made known to the visitors. . There is a huge canon got rusted. Thondaiman dynasty chiefton Rajagopala Thondaiman ruled this area and to whom Raja of Ramnad, KIZHAVAN ( refers to Chiefton and not old age) SETHUPATHY has accorded the rule of Pudukkottai, the Princely State. Sethupathi married the sister of Thondaiman, Kathali Nachiyaar, and as a token of love and affection he handed over the reign of Pudukkottai Samasthaanam to Thondaiman Dynasty, the militant warrior race of glorious Pudukkottai. To the people of Kandarvakkotai, Pudukkottai, Thirumayam, Thirukkatupalli, Thankavur and Tiruchirappalli, royal family and royal rulers means, THE GREAT THONDAIMAAN, still today. and Fort meant Pudukkottai only. The very name Pudukkottai itself indicates that it is/was a beautiful fort . The Thirumayam Fort should be properly maintained. One more thing..wrongly depicted in history. Portrayal of Thondaiman as a betrayer of Kattabomman. Veera pandia Kattabomman did not belong to the royal sect and he is only a pirate. In accordance with the agreement made with the British regime, he was handed over to the British by Thondaiman. It is proper that such a person and looter should be handed over to the whites. It is a pity that because of the great thespian, mobile celluloid dictionary of South India, Sivaji Ganesan, Katabomman was wrongly portrayed as a nationalist. and Kattabomman was glorified to the maximum. But at the same time the majestic, royal Pudukkotai Thondaiman was belittled...quite anachronistic...Thondaiman sect of Pudukkottai Princely State cannot be and should not be compared with this pirate...??

An interesting place, with a lovely rock cut chamber housing a shiva lingam. Would have been better if there was more information on the history of the place and its significance .
Also the place could be better maintained.

Just on our way to Rameswaram from Trichy we spotted this fort. It was beautiful. But not very well maintained. During night it is not at all seen. Proper lighting can make this fort even better from outside.

Not much crowded, small but beautiful fort on the outskirts of Pudukkottai. Has been used as an outpost for guarding the city. It gives a excellent view of the surroundings. The place is well maintained and worth a visit for history lovers. Don't miss the temples adjoining the fort. Wonderful old temple architectures to be seen

The fort has been heavily reconstructed. There are several sets of walls, all reconstructed, even those amongst the houses. Unfortunately (from my point of view) reconstruction has been done with the aim of creating a tourist attraction and a selfie site, rather than any sort of historical accuracy. The mini-ziggurat at the top is a humorous example. Disappointing unless your objective is another selfie. Even so, it is an impressive site as you approach the town and affords great views from the top. The cave temple/ shrine is unimpressive.

This place is located approx a 70km from trichy.
This is a beautiful fort which is less spoken. Great history lies behind this.
Kattabomman and oomai thurai was arrested at this fort.
The view of the city from the top of the fort is wonderful.
Also there is a beautiful temple behind the fort. There is a narayanan shrine which is carved from the rock is excellent.
Normally any fort will have a view of particular directions. But this fort has a circular view where 360' view is possible. There are lot of view points.
There is a Shiva temple without any steps(dont know how people used to access this temple earlier - now they have placed steel ladder).
If you ask there is a gentleman who can explain the history for you.

This 400 years old fort is located in a small town called Thirumayam. Good to see most of the structure got restored to give us a clear picture of how this fort would have looked like in its initial days. Top of the this fort sits an old heavy iron cannon and the view from there is spectacular. Fort is surrounded by water bodies and paddy fields on three sides with palm trees lining on the road approaching the fort. Visiting this place between Nov-Jan will provide relief from summer heat and a chance to experience nice scenic view of green paddy fields and water bodies filled with rain water. The entire fort can be covered in couple of hours so plan to reach around 10 am or after 3 pm. Don't miss to visit the Cave temples located at the foothills of this Fort.

This fort is situated on the Trichy - Rameswaram National highway just on the outskirts of Thirumayam town. Unfortunately the fort has not been maintained properly since many years and is undergoing dilapidation year after year.
It is possible to trek to the top of the fort and spend some quality time enjoying the 360 degree view of the town. There used to be a cannon and a cave temple inside the fort, not sure if they are still maintained well.

The fort is situated on the only hill in the vicinity so I was enjoying the good view. The area is well maintained and relatively clean. I didn't go to the two cave temples in the fort area as the ladder to the caves was too steep and occupied with many monkeys. The entry fee for foreigner is relatively high.

We visited this fort today on our way from Tanjore to Kanathukottan and were mostly disappointed. Yes there is a nice 360C view from the top but that's about it. No buildings inside, only a rusty canon covered in graffiti! 200 rupees just to look at a wall. All done in 10 minutes. The price has doubled in one year for foreigners. Seems a total rip off. At least the toilets were clean and free.
