The cannons from this temple mark the onset of Durga Puja in many parts of Bishnupur. It does not look that old because of the painting which is done every year. There is a tree outside the branches of which are entwined in an interesting way to look like an image of Ganesha!!

This is a temple located in Bishnupur town of Bankura district, where Puja is regularly held and curiously, this temple doesn't have the terracotta adornments which is common to most temples in this town. The presiding deity is Goddess Durga and it is free entrance for everybody. The place gets most active during the famous Durga Puja of Bengal, and it has that... More

In Keeping with the tradition, even today after the cannons are fired from this temple a certain portion of pujas (offerings) start in other parts of mallabhum(todays bankura vishupur) during Durga puja. The temple is open to public for offering .Also see the idara or big pond at the side. There is a statue of the last of mallarajas Within the complex.

This is also part of the many Poda-mati ( burnt-earth) tiled temples in Bisnupur tourist circuit. A local guide available at most hotels will take you to all the temples and give a good history of each site. Without a guide all temples look alike and a visitor will not get a real flavour of the place.

Maa Durga is worshipped as Mrinmayee devi here. The idol is very different than the typical types we are used to. The head of the idol is slightly bent on its right side with a wonderfully smiling face. It resembles the deity of Laxmi and Durga (as per locales). Do not miss to see the Pancha Pallav tree (one tree... More
