The Picts in stone - Meigle Museum has an impressive collection of Pictish carved sculpture, including cross slabs, recumbent gravestones, a hogback stone and rare architectural fragments. These demonstrate both the artistic vigour of Pictish society and the skill of its stonecarvers. The former schoolhouse housing the collection backs onto the graveyard where most of the stones were found. The present church at Meigle dates to around 1870, but there has probably been a church on this site for over a thousand years.

A small but intense museum near the back of the churchyard, containing about 20 sculptured stones. Well explained. Go there to see 8th century representations of animals, real and imaginary. Best picture: alarmed man being chased by a manticore. Aargh! Staffed by a delightful and...More

This is a collection of Pictish stones from 9th century. Boring? no way! Lisa is the custodian and she'll provide an interesting introduction to the Picts, the stones and what it all means. Great stuff.

This little museum houses several delicate Pictish stones that could also be displayed in prestigious large museums. In Meigle, however, one can study and admire them without any glass barrier or the like. Really good explanations on Pictish history, also from the helpful stuff. Good...More

Very nice collection of Pictish Stones, the staff person there that day was knowledgeable and informative. As typical of Historic Scotland/NTS sites, very nice selection of literature/gifts. Allow one hour minimum.
