    A pleasant visit
What a lovely way to spend a sunny day. Lots of walking but pleased to say I made it up to the castle. The rhododendron and magnolias were magnificent. Topped off with a visit to the cafe. Would highly recommend the toasted beef and onion sandwich and the sausage roll.

The tea room is a treasure
When considering the quality, cost and professional service on offer, the tea room is exceptional: coming as it does with pleasant views over parkland. What could be described as a cricket pavilion, without a pitch, takes the visitor back before the commercialisation of many house and gardens. I had the cheese scone and a pot of tea, good value at £8.25, I can also recommend the excellent cafetiere coffee. A pleasant day wandering the gardens even in cloudy weather.

Gorgeous English Country Gardens with a Friendly feel
We visited last week just after the Easter Weekend. Beautiful, well maintained gardens and two very sweet piggies which you just might see wandering the lawns at times. There is something intimate about Castle Hill as the family live there also. Mark on the gate served us our lunch and is a complete asset to the Estate. Friendly chatty gardeners too. A lovely day out in Devon, we will return.

We love a good Xmas light show and when we saw this advertised locally we just had to book. Don't waste your money.

'Ignite your senses with our magical unique Christmas experience. Take a gentle after-dark stroll through the gardens, while enjoying dazzling illuminations and stunning projections transforming Castle Hill into a festive winter wonderland.'

Sadly the estate failed miserably to live up to the promise. Go to RHS Rosemoor instead, you will probably enjoy the walk from the car park to the entrance more. We followed the 'trail' twice in the 15/20 minutes we were there, thinking we must have missed a side path somewhere.

Very small craft fair, the variety of delicious street foods on offer consisted of three stalls offering hog roast, doughnuts, some sweets. Apparently there were marshmallows as well, but by this time we had lost the will to live.

The only 'Wonder' was why we parted with our money. Certainly wont be back based on this event.

Thank you for your feedback following your visit to Castle Hill Illuminated last week. It’s disappointing to hear that you felt the event didn’t meet your expectations. It was the first week of our first year running a Christmas Illuminations event and we are learning, adapting and improving all the time to ensure our visitors enjoy a fun, festive experience. We very much hope that you will join us for one of our summer events, and maybe again for Christmas next year.

Lovely place to visit, beautiful gardens & walks! Lovely cream teas, friendly staff.

I can only imagine it would be an awesome wedding venue.

Would be nice to be a little more child friendly, such as a treasure trail map & children's outdoor play area.

But overall loved it, can't wait to revisit with a picnic!

A fabulous walk around some truly beautiful gardens. A bee laden lavender path to start your journey and then off into the grounds. The hike up to the castle is well worth the effort. The gardens are quiet and not yet highly commercialised. No gift shop but there is a tearoom. I would definitely go again. Great to have somewhere to go with dogs as well.

A great place to visit if you like walking. Lots of winding paths throughout the estate and some impressive gardens.. Great views from the castle, well worth the climb!
Probably not suitable for buggies or anyone with walking difficulties.

Lovely gardens and amazing views from the castle and triumphal arch. We drove a little way up the road before walking up to the arch as found this easier than walking along the road. Really friendly lady at the tea room and lovely cream tea.

We had a lovely walk today, it was the first time my dad has visited and he loved it, we sat at the castle for an hour having a picnic in the sun and admiring the incredible view! Just what we needed 😀
