Dear Brian and Lorraine,
I'm writing with a review of our foraging adventures at Bluebell Lane on 21 August 2021.
Firstly, I found it most enjoyable and interesting. I was really impressed with Brian's extensive knowledge of the local area, place names, mountains, the flora and their uses. I had forgotten what sorrel looked like and he brought me back to my memories of picking it and eating it as a child. It was a wonderful opportunity to experience its taste again and to be reminded what it looked like and how to find it. I have actually found it twice since then.
I also loved having my daughter Colleen with me on the trip. On the following Tuesday we had cause to put into use some of our new knowledge. While out for a walk Colleen got stung by a wasp (twice) and very quickly developed large red welts on her arm and chest. She found some broad leaf plantain, crushed it and rubbed it on the stings. She continued to rub the plantain for the rest of our walk and by the time we got home the stings and redness were almost gone. It was amazing!
I'd recommend anyone to go on one of these trips - you won't be disappointed. I can't wait to go again!
Thank you again,

Anne

PS I really want to thank my daughter Leonora for booking the trip for us.

Thats great to hear Anne, it was a pleasure to bring back childhood memories of collecting wild plants and better again to hear that you have since put them to good use. Colleen has since been in touch sharing another memory that you had of using 'mouse eared chickweed' as a folk remedy / cure, something that was passed down from your aunt. This is what it's all about for me, re-igniting that connection between nature and people as well as people and past generations, ancestral skills. Brian

Myself and my husband recently attended the Butter and Booley event with Mountain Ways Ireland.Well what can I say !! We were absolutely blown away by this event and had a fantastic day in the company of Brian and Lorraine. The wealth and depth of local knowledge Brian has and his passion about his ancestry in Cloghinny and our farming traditions is just amazing .From start to finish, an intriguing snapshot into the history of butter making on the backdrop of such breathtaking beautiful scenery on a glorious spring day on Slieve Gullion. what more can we ask for 😎 .This event is topped off by a truly fabulous ploughman's lunch with all homegrown local products and presented to the finest detail .i can't stress enough the effort and personal touches that Lorraine goes to which enhances this fantastic experience. There is such a warmth and passion for nature with this tour ,reflected in the effort Brian and Lorraine go to which makes it so enjoyable. A fabulous day which I really recommend to anyone young and older Embrace our culture and traditions of the past so expertly delivered by Brian . You won't regret it !!

We contacted Brian to see if he could do a family foraging walk for my 11 year old son’s birthday who is interested in foraging. Following a lovely chat about what he could do and recommending various books we decided to go ahead and book. Such attention to detail, involving emails and calls to understand what my son was interested in and to prepare us for the day. Brian was very engaging from the very start and built an immediate rapport. Nothing was too much trouble and he really bought foraging to life for us all. The foraged snacks were wonderful. We won’t walk around Gosford Park in the same way again!

Absolutely blown away by the wonderful Booley and Butter tour provided by MWI. Brian and Lorraine went above and beyond to provide an outstanding experience. Their expertise and passion their people and place shone like a beacon as they delivered a perfectly paced day packed full of interest and anecdotes. Brian's meticulous research and vast array of historical knowledge gave us a true insight into our distant ancestors and how they went about their daily lives.
On the gentle hike, not only did we witness the beautiful scenery of the Ring Of Gullion but Brian gave us an enriching historical and geographical context of the area and took time to showcase the rare flora and fauna too. Our beautiful Booley lunch was delicious and plentiful - what a treat! Such hospitality! I look forward to my next experience with MWI. Go raibh mile maith agat.

Thanks so much for a very informative and fun few hours Brian. Your obvious love and respect for your surroundings is infectious, from your stories of times gone by and how people used nature's bounty to discussing how we today need to get back to nature but also how we must respect what nature provides and also understand and respect the power of plants.
The goodies enroute were delicious, thanks to Lorraine and Daithi too!
I highly recommend this Foraging trip and I'm looking forward to the one in the autumn.

It's not every day that I get the privilege to guide a Master Herbalist so it means a lot that you enjoyed your day. You and all of your friends are very welcome back in the Autumn. Lorraine and Daithí are both stars of the show! Thanks, Brian

Foraging in Bluebell Lane with Brian & Lorraine was a great experience. Brian has in depth knowledge of plants and their properties and he was very generous in sharing his knowledge. He is also very experienced at putting his knowledge into practice and he had taken several jars of honey, jam, pesto, sweet pickle and fruit sauces that he had made with plants he had foraged. As we walked along the paths of Bluebell Lane Lorraine appeared frequently as if by magic with welcome trays of nibbles and Ivan Chai tea for us to sample the products Brian had made. Our morning concluded with lunch presented beautifully by Lorraine and an opportunity to sample even more of the amazing results of Brian’s foraging - dandelion jelly sandwiches, wild garlic kimchi, hogweed seed ferment and elderberry syrup - only some of the amazing tastes! Definitely an enjoyable and well spent morning!

I had the pleasure of attending Brian's Foraging at Lunasa recently, at Bluebell Lane Glamping in Mullaghbane. Brian has a wealth of knowledge that he presents in an easy to understand and personable manner, accompanied by stories and references to the beautiful Ring of Gullion, where he grew up. Throughout the day we were fed delicious tastes of food Brian and Lorraine had made using plants he had foraged. I would highly recommend Brian's foraging courses, whether you are a complete novice or have some knowledge and experience.

Had a brilliant day with mountain ways Ireland. Brian and Lorraine were just amazing hosts. I highly recommend this tour, not only do you get a detailed history of this beautiful mountain and area but you get a taste of the most mouth watering jams, honey and kim chi, all organic, and made by Brian. Then there is the butter, made by you, on the tour, with help from Brian is lovely on the fruit bread included in your lunch. I will be first in line to buy the dandelion jelly should they ever decide to sell it! Roll on the next tour! 😊 Kathleen, St. Mary's

Thats great Kathleen, we appreciate it. I might switch to jelly and preserves manufacturing although plucking flowers from a whin bush without a hand of thorns would make you think twice !

I booked a refresher course in night nav skills with Brian and really glad I did it as it prepared me really well for a navigation assessment. I learned loads and the instruction was clear and thorough. A most enjoyable but chilly evening in the Mournes! I would not hesitate to recommend Brian to anyone looking to learn new skills or refresh old ones

A great experience was had by all today; at the foot of Slieve Gullion in Co Down. It all started with a lovely welcome from Brian & Lorraine; and then we all chatted over morning coffee in the garden.

We listened to family and local history in the conservatory; plus we were given an insight into the tradition of butter making.

We walked and talked on the trails in the warm sunshine; and did a bit of foraging along the way.

We had great fun making butter; which we then ate along with a fantastic picnic lunch in the secluded outdoor dining area.

I would highly recommend this event to anybody who wants something that is a little bit different.

Well done guys 👍
